I was born and raised in the south. I come from a large, talkative family. All my life, I listened to my family talk. Hearing them was more fun than television. I grew up with country music playing constantly in the background. It was on the radio when I woke up and still playing when I went to bed. My parents read to me, made up bedtime stories, and let me tell them my made-up stories. Let me follow them around with my childish tales, encouraging me. Being an author has always been my number one dream.
Set in 1943, Todd Jansan lives in Cedar Cove, NC, on a tobacco farm with his extended family. World War II is the backdrop for their daily lives. Despite his Uncle Clyde’s draft number not being called, Clyde leaves one night and doesn’t come back. No one will tell Todd where he is or why he left.
A curious ten-year-old, Todd notices everything, even the ongoings of their neighbors, the Hammonds. Horace Hammond is a drunk who threatens to drop his children into an old-fashioned water well whenever he takes the notion. These events set the stage for the book, leading the reader into the apparently simple but deceivingly complicated lives of the Jansan family and their neighbors, as seen through young Todd’s eyes.
This is a classic. I purchased a paperback copy from Scholastic Books when I was in the eighth grade. I was immediately enthralled with Francie Nolan and her family. This book cemented my wish to become an author. I’ve read this book numerous times, and it never grows old.
I can see Francie sitting on the fire escape, her library book in hand and a bowl of homemade rock candy by her side. Her pain and her joys are etched into my mind. She is an old friend that I like to visit every now and then.

Scout’s relationship with her family and Calpurnia, the maid who is like a mama to her, drew me into the book and wouldn’t let me go. I waited with anticipation to see what Boo Radley would put in the tree hole for Scout, her brother, and Dill.
I feared Boo along with the children and learned the lesson that sometimes, in life, we are afraid of the wrong people. I learned that life is far more complicated than it first appears. I’ve read this book over and over, always with anticipation, even though I know what’s happening next.

I was drawn to Bertie from the start. Her struggles to understand herself and why things happened as they did resonated with me in a very personal way.
I read this recently on Kindle and couldn’t wait to read more each time I had to put it down to do some mundane tasks in life, such as eating, taking my granddaughter to therapy, and stuff like that. Bertie stayed in my mind, calling me to finish her story.
Even now that I’ve finished, she still whispers in my mind, making me want to read the book all over again.

I love this book because I so closely relate to the main character, Wallis Ann.
The book begins with Wallis Ann and her family facing the threat of a flood. I’ve lived through more hurricanes than I can name. I completely understood Wallis feeling overshadowed by her beautiful, non-verbal sister, Laci. Like Wallis, I never felt pretty; I never felt noticed. I struggled to be seen. I struggled to be ok with myself, all the while working hard to be helpful, doing whatever I felt needed doing, but feeling invisible all the same.
