I’m certain she’s coming to the last of her repeated nine lives. Somehow, she makes landing in excrement, on fire or not, the just right approach to survival and victory, even when it frequently comes with profound loss. Any book that can make my heart race with worry and laugh at the same time is worth a read, more than once.

When I was a queer teen in the early 2000s, I didn’t have sapphic books or media available to me aside from anime, and even then, the dubbed versions on TV were scrubbed of queerness (I’m looking at you, Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura). I did have Revolutionary Girl Utena, and it was everything to me: fantasy, ballgowns, and girls dancing together. Two things I absolutely loved growing up: fantasy novels and history. Swashbuckling pirate stories are like a fantastic combination of both, and the way that the age of sail touched all corners of the world creates an opportunity for so many different kinds of stories to be told through this lens. As a queer writer, my passion is writing the kind of stories I loved as a child. As a trans adult, I find joy in making the next generations feel comfortable in their own skin. I’m a huge fan of queer re-tellings (as you can probably sense from this list) as well as lush, detailed historical fiction, and C.B. Lee delivers both in this vivid, adrenaline-spiking adventure. My favorite thing about this story is how Lee takes the bones of Treasure Island and reanimates them, bringing a new perspective to a classic by shifting the focus from traditional Western pirate narratives. After reading MaryLu Tyndall’s pirate romances, I didn’t think anything could quite compare...until I readVeil of Pearls. This privateer romance isn’t as adventurous, but the beautiful romance, intense but perfectly-paced plot, and endearing characters made this story just as exciting and intriguing! It’s easily my favorite of hers and a top recommendation for readers in search of a story that will touch andthrill their hearts!
