My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Ain't Burned All the Bright

Sharon Skinner Why did I love this book?

Ain’t Burned All the Bright is powerful and beautiful and, dare I say, breathtaking!

Reynolds taps into our collective psyche, reaches deep into our hearts, and gives us a story about who we are and who we can be, all contained within a few sentences that play out over the course of a 384-page book.

And Griffin’s powerful illustrations elevate the work to the next level.

"In through the nose, out through the mouth..."

Each time I read it, it stuns me into breathlessness.

Jason Reynolds and his best bud, Jason Griffin, had a mind-meld. And they decided to tackle it, in one fell swoop, in about ten sentences, and 300 pages of art, this piece, this contemplation-manifesto-fierce-vulnerable-gorgeous-terrifying-WhatIsWrongWithHumans-hope-filled-hopeful-searing-Eye-Poppingly-Illustrated-tender-heartbreaking-how-The-HECK-did-They-Come-UP-with-This project about oxygen. My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Midnight Library

Sharon Skinner Why did I love this book?

This book is deep and layered with rich thematic underpinnings and references. The story loops around itself in a way that deepens the reader's experience of the multiverse setting. Teeming with symbolism and juicy metaphors, it is perfect for the word nerd who loves immersive reading.

The main character is fascinating and flawed, but her life choices and her regrets are totally relatable. Who among us, especially during our lowest points in life, has not dreamed of what it might be like to live a different life?

Here, the author offers the irresistible concept of being able to try on different versions of our lives and step into a new one, should we choose.

Also, it has a library in it!

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter

Sharon Skinner Why did I love this book?

Goss does a great job of twisting old stories into something new and timely and more accessible for readers who appreciate strong, capable female protagonists.

I love the incorporation of the diverse female characters from classic works with a focus on the courage and abilities they bring to bear in solving the primary mystery while exploring their personal histories. The characters are full of personality and the book’s throwback metafiction structure is not only perfectly suited for the time period it springs from, but is fun and entertaining, too.

What is this book about?

Based on some of literature's horror and science fiction classics, this "tour de force of reclaiming the narrative, executed with impressive wit and insight" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) debut is the story of a remarkable group of women who come together to solve the mystery of a series of gruesome murders-and the bigger mystery of their own origins.

Mary Jekyll, alone and penniless following her parents' death, is curious about the secrets of her father's mysterious past. One clue in particular hints that Edward Hyde, her father's former friend and a murderer, may be nearby, and there is a reward…
