This book was crucial in my path to veganism.

It is a memoir where Barbara Kingsolver writes humorously about a year of living off the land. She is not a vegetarian but must raise, kill, and butcher animals if she wants to eat meat. The result is, every time she eats meat, she weighs the emotional cost.

This reckoning has been my bible. I ask myself, would I be willing to kill the chick I raised to eat? Inevitably, the answer is “no.” 

The book is not a treaty encouraging people to live off the land, it’s the opposite. It makes you appreciate every bit of food you put in your mouth and the fact you did not have to grow, harvest, clean and cook it.

Slavery used to be the economic engine of the Americas. Only a few could clearly see that keeping other humans in bondage was a horrible crime. Ingrid Newkirk has a similar clarity of vision when it comes to animal rights. I believe that in the future, most of us look back with horror at industrial husbandry and the use of hormones to cultivate ever larger beasts for the slaughterhouse. You may not entirely agree with Newkirk, but you have to take her seriously. She’s also a genius at publicizing her cause of animal rights, helping to popularize veganism and the banning of fur and leather products as well as many kinds of animal research.

It is not only a cookbook but a guide to building a kitchen that sustains and nourishes the body and mind.

I hesitate to recommend vegan guidebooks about specific destinations, because in most cases I find them unnecessary. If all you need are listings of veg-friendly restaurants, that kind of info is generally best found on the Internet or on apps like HappyCow, as it changes so quickly.

Japan, however, is one destination where it’s really helpful to have some background info about the local language and culture as it applies to vegan travel. Jesse Duffield has made multiple trips to Japan and offers insights that most foreign tourists simply wouldn’t know about.

This book is about a lot of things, but ostensibly, it’s about a drug addict, Felix, who is investigating the death of his friend, Marina. But really, the book wanders, like the mind of someone clobbered by the hardships of life, of drugs, of living in Scotland in the hangover of colonialism, and of a political moment where the disadvantaged are being forgotten. The book has the heart of the wounded.

It reminded me of Your Republic is Calling You (Young-Ha Kim) in that they both speak to what wounded people have to do to get by (the lies we tell ourselves and more). I'm not Scottish, but even though this book hasn't made its way over the Atlantic, I loved its sincerity.
