I grew up in a large family that initially didn’t include my mother or father. My mother made the sacrifice of leaving our island of Trinidad to make a home for us in Canada. She was separated from us for years while my grandparents raised me and my brothers. I think that type of upbringing triggered my curiosity about what a family can be. When I became a father at 18, the question of what kind of family I would build became the central theme of my life. It still is today, which is why stories that revolve around family are so captivating for me.
Talk about teenage angst. This YA novel is like living inside the mind of an anxiety-driven, introverted teenager who constantly finds herself in precarious positions.
I loved the honesty of this book the most. I got so frustrated with the main character because she kept making decisions that I’ve seen people in real life make. I wanted to scream at her so many times throughout the novel, and several times, I put the book down and shook my head in frustration. That’s when you know the novel is a winner.

I’m a sucker for complicated mother characters
(surprising, right?). The narrator’s mother in A Hand to Hold in Deep Water is
conspicuously absent, yet she infuses every page. As the book goes on, we learn more about her story, and it only gets more heartbreaking.
I love how unflinching
Nocher is in writing these mother-and-daughter characters, even in the face of
some of the most challenging subjects to put on the page.
I also love it when a
fictional story teaches me something new or takes me to an unfamiliar place.
This was the case with Ocracoke Island in North Carolina.
I thoroughly enjoyed

I do own a rescued husky, and there’s nothing like an engrossing audiobook to get me through those minus-forty Canadian winter walks with a dog.
You can’t go wrong with any Rebekah Weatherspoon book frankly, but Xeni has a special place in my heart because of the leads: Xeni, a witchy bi lead with a very complicated family bumping into a favourite romantic trope: the marriage of convenience (only, it’s very much not convenient, thank you); and Mason, a burly, bearded, bi bear who, I cannot express this clearly enough, is so instantly cuddle-worthy. That these bisexual characters are thrown into this marriage by someone they both loved as part of her will just adds to the trope joy. Beyond that, there’s so much steamy sex-positivity in this book, alongside Weatherspoon’s always brilliant supportive friend groups and mix of chosen and biological family that I found myself taking the dog for extra walks just to keep listening.

I read many different genres, but my favorite to write and read is romance. I love ones that have angst, adventure, danger, and a passionate push and pull between the love interests. Okay, well, I’ve kind of been in my romance era this year. I think that’s pretty
common, haha. But this book. Oh my lawd. Not only did it hit the romance sweet
spot, it hit this beautiful void I didn’t even realize I had: wonderfully
written neurodivergent characters.
Oh yes, that’s right. The main love interest
in this one is a broody neurodivergent, and he is SO well-written. I could
easily see myself in him and that was a feeling I don’t often have reading
books in general, let alone romance.
We see the ups and downs of what
neurodivergency means and it layers his character in a really unique and
relatable way. And that’s not to discount the protagonist; she’s also
neurodivergent and the way their personalities layer together was really
refreshing. I LOVED this book.

I’ve loved romance stories for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, we’d make the long drive to visit my grandma, and I would always sneak into her room, perusing the Harlequin romance books she was never without. As I grew older, I turned to novels with love stories to escape the hard times in my life. If I could rely on anything, it was that I would get a happy ending when I delved into those pages. When I began writing my own books, that feeling was what I became most passionate about giving to my readers. An escape from the everyday. The promise of a happy ending.

This book for me was full of the tropes that romance readers love. Cute meet cute. Forced proximity. Male character grumpy, female character full of sunshine. Enemies to lovers. Opposites attracts. Misunderstandings. Break-ups. Right in front of you all along. Happy ever after.
It was a rollercoaster ride of all of these tropes and it worked absolutely brilliantly. I was rooting for them to get together right from the start, but then I changed my mind. But then I changed it again! LOL! It was a really fun read, that just left me grinning with a wonderfully romantic ending that I adored. Another one that left me with a heart full of hope and joy!
