The most recommended books for a 15 month old

There’s a lot going on in P! is for Potty!—and I like it! In this book, Elmo is having a playdate with his cousin (who is potty training) and there are also lift-the-flaps all over each page. Bonus: Something many people don’t realize is that Sesame Street is run by a non-profit called Sesame Workshop—and the programs and resources they provide for kids and families around the globe are capital I Incredible. So, not to be dramatic about it, but you’re not just making Elmo part of your potty journey if you get this book—you’re basically helping make the world a better place, too.  

This is another impressive and prolific book series.

The magic here is how trains on set tracks on an island can have such big and diverse personalities. Thomas was the little engine trying to do big things.

In a way he is like a little kid growing up and exploring their independence. He tries to show he can do things the bigger trains (or kids) can.

My kids and I had a great time growing up alongside Thomas. My son always carried a small Thomas toy in his pocket.

I would notice he would pat his pocket whenever he needed extra encouragement, for example, at the park among the bigger kids.

The robots in this book are cute and funny. In comic book format, a red robot and a blue robot get upset with each other but still maintain their friendship. In each of the three stories, the robots deal with misunderstandings, bad advice, hurt feelings, and apologies. The book made me laugh, which is never a bad thing.

My daughter has two mums, and most mainstream children’s books don’t feature same-sex couples. This one is different. It’s a short story, in a poem format, that tells you about a day in the life of a baby with two mums – Mummy and Mama. She loves seeing her family reflected in the book and points out the three characters and tells us what they’re doing. It’s a joy to read to her, and she loves it so much she’s on her second copy.

Forget Clifford and Snoopy. When it comes to fictional dogs, the most famous of all in New Zealand is Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy. (“Dairies” are what New Zealanders call corner stores.)

Hairy Maclary—a black, shaggy dog with a spring in his step—goes off for a walk with some of his cleverly named friends, like Bottomly Potts covered in spots, and Schnitzel vom Krumm with a very low tum. With a fun, sing-songy rhythm, cute dogs, and one very scary cat (the notorious Scarface Claw!), it’s no wonder this book’s been delighting “wee ones” for forty years.

This is a wonderful, sturdy book for inquisitive little hands. The use of photographed appliqué to illustrate is inspired, and the visuals clearly capture my youngest son’s imagination.

The different rhymes each elicit a smile of recognition now, and even just seeing the book being brought out sparks a squeal of excitement. This is a book that I think we’ll all remember sharing in years to come.

I am a kid at heart, and like most kids, I can’t get enough of the planets and space in general. This wildly entertaining picture book introduces the reader to the solar system via a crazy spaceship ride with a small girl and her dog. The story has brilliantly paced rhyming text and zippy neon and black cartoon illustrations that anthropomorphize the planets in a way that cleverly matches their characteristics.

Everything plays its part in this book—I love the way that even the curved typography echoes the movement and excitement of the content. We learn many facts about the planets as the spaceship zooms; by the time we return to Earth with our astronaut guides, we are much wiser and better informed. Stellar!

Michelle Lanier’s My N.C. from A to Z is illustrated by another awesome North Carolina native, Dare Coulter.

This wonderful book celebrates the great state of North Carolina, highlighting our African American heritage, unveiling historical landmarks, and introducing kids to social justice icons. Spotlights include the Great Dismal Swamp, Ella Baker, Black Wall Street, and Pauli Murray.

With all the gorgeous scenery in New Zealand, my family and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting out into nature by hiking on weekends.

In sparse but skillful rhyme, this book follows a group of families that go exploring together. A gentle story with soft illustrations, this contemporary picture book feels like a cozy classic.

One of the best books about someone desperate to sleep is Good-night, Owl! written and illustrated by Pat Hutchins. This is short and jolly, excellent for very young children, and there is a board book format available. The clear bright pictures are like mosaics.

Poor Owl, who has to sleep in the daytime, is constantly disturbed by bees buzzing, woodpeckers pecking, doves cooing and squirrels cracking nuts. These are refreshingly local creatures, not exotic zoo inmates. It’s a rhythmic, cumulative text which I often read to the young children I taught. They loved to join in with the noises, and act the story. There’s a surprise ending. You’ll love to see Owl get his own back!
