Louise Allen is the author of over sixty historical romances, published by Harlequin and Mills & Boon and also of time-slip historical mystery romances, historical mysteries and non-fiction.

The Regency is her passion, an endlessly fascinating era full of contrast and change, danger and elegance, luxury and squalor. Women had freedoms that would shock their Victorian granddaughters, yet lived within social codes that both intrigue and appall us now. Men in Society could win fortunes at the turn of a card and lose their lives in the hazard of a duel all in the space of twenty four hours. It is all so different, with the glamour of the past gilding it - and yet the characters seem to reach out and touch us now.

4.0 out of 5 stars A comforting read

Really enjoyed this book. It wouldn't be my top 10 Louise Allen books, however I think any one of her books are superior to most other authors in this genre.
It is very much a character driven book and I really enjoyed the journey both characters made getting to know each other after marriage and eventually falling in love.
Yes there are no dramatic falling outs or villains, but I think it takes real skill to keep the story simple but still keep the reader absorbed. As ever it also feels very authentic to the time period.

3.0 out of 5 stars A steady marriage of convenience between old friends

A steamy story. A lady marries an Earl who was a childhood friend to enable him to gain an inheritance and her to leave her cousins care.
I found the pace of the story a little slow, and the fact that the main two characters who were such good friends could not discuss their feelings when married frustrating. Otherwise to be honest it was okay but unremarkable, hence the 3 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant read

This was an easy read, a gentle historical romance set in the Kent and London. Isobel had loved Leo for years but he had only seen her as a friend because he was in love with a beautiful vivacious blond. But the blond wanted to marry a fortune and as Leo was poor, she turned him down. Leo was devastated. Isobel was living in her old home, but now her cousin and his awful wife had moved in and were making her life miserable, getting married to one another seemed an ideal solution, so they did, without considering what a marriage needed to make it work.
It was a nice read, there were some misunderstandings but as a fan of this author, I thought it was a bit lacking in intrigue and excitement as some of her previous books.
