5.0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into real history
I really enjoyed this novel. Well written, with confident, meticulous knowledge of the era and a very interesting range of characters. Having studied the English civil war period at A level it brought back many memories! It was fascinating to read about life at Cromwell’s court at Whitehall and learn much more about him as a family man as well as a politician. I had forgotten about how close Cromwell came to accepting the crown. The love story of Frances and Robert Rich was touching. A breath of fresh air to read a historical novel that puts real history first, and where the “imagined bits” are so credible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing read
I became so engrossed with this book that I felt I was there. Transported to the time I inhabited the household of Frances Cromwell and her family. Peak times of happiness and trauma to empathise with and gasp with.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and informative read
I had read several books about this period of history both from the Puritan and royalist point of view, but this was my first book about the Cromwell family. I found the book improved as it developed. I am not sure that the prologue device worked particularly well and at first I found the young Frances really irritating, but as she matured, particularly in her widowhood, she became a more rounded character. There were a few slightly self conscious didactic elements in the story, as for example to tell us that the custom of dividing the week into five working days and a weekend was introduced by Cromwell. I had not known this and in itself it was an interesting bit of information, but I had a feeling it was deliberately there to enlighten the reader rather than to move the story on.
Cromwell appears a compassionate and a likeable, loving family man attempting to curb the excesses of both parties. I would like to think that it is as true a portrayal as the primary sources enable us to see.
I very much enjoyed the author's note at the end of the book explaining the resentment of the royal family towards Cromwell to this day. History does cast a long shadow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well researched and well written
Well researched and well written, This is an interesting exploration of the dynamics of Oliver Cromwell’s family during 1657- 8 when it was proposed he take the title of King. It’s told from the point of view of his youngest daughter Frances. She, like all her brothers and sisters is very politically aware and it is of course of particular interest to her - the potential ( marriageable) princess - what her father decides. She’s even linked with the exile Charles Stuart. Interesting to see what she writes next, apparently she will be giving us the backstory of the sisters we meet in this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, would highly recommend.
I read lots of historical books, factual and fiction, usually about the Tudors or Eleanor of Aquitaine, or of the Welsh mediaeval period, such as Here be Dragons , but this was my first historical novel about the Cromwellian period. Have to say it was fantastic, couldn't put it down, really enjoyed it. The author seemed well informed about the era being written about, it flowed well, and the characters really came to life. Would recommend this to anyone .
