A steamy psychological thriller.

When U.S. Marshall Kate Swift enters a trauma-recovery workshop, she never expects to be caught up in a fiery romance and a violent crime wave.

WARNING: Death is Potential features adult situations and has sexual content.

As Kate and Tom Scott grow close, their bond is tested by series of murders. After fire shuts down access to Big Sur, and the workshop, Kate takes control of the police investigation. To save Tom's life, Kate must find the killer.

Perfect for mystery and romance fans, Death is Potential is a nuanced combination of "The Guest List" by Lucy Foley and "Nine Perfect Strangers" by Liane Moriarty, with a touch of the humor of "Squeeze Me" by Carl Hiaasen.

U.S. Marshall Kate Swift is learning to trust again and possibly falling in love, but a string of murders keeps getting in her way. Swift must strike a balance between her inner work at a trauma recovery workshop and leading a police investigation -- all without jeopardizing her new romance. Set near Big Sur overlooking the rugged Pacific, this enjoyable read will keep you turning the pages.

This mystery has a sizzling sex scene and carefully detailed therapy sessions which introduce the characters, a clever book with a different take. For me I could have used a little more action early on.

Death is Potential has a lot of potential. The characters are engaging and there are some laugh out loud moments mixed with the overarching romance and who-done-it-mystery.

Burnett spends too much time, however, unpacking the therapy sessions of secondary characters in the workshop and doesn't unveil the who-done-it plot until the final pages when it all comes out at once. So much goes on in this mystery/ romance romp that I wish I had other readers to bounce things off of.

Kate Swift is a strong female lead who has overcome the obstacles of being a woman in her field with a blackbelt in martial arts, but truly, what woman doesn't want to find a rich man to take care of her?

The setting of "Death is Potential" is fascinating–a thinly disguised version of the Esalen Institute on the rugged Big Sur coast of California. Rich in the history of the human potential movement, the setting is perfect for a mystery. It's a place where people gather to talk all day and night in search of the truth, and so is a hotbed of lies, evasion, and complex emotional history. Bob Burnett makes good use of the physical location and skillfully renders the pop-psych-speech of its staff and clients. A fun and funny read.

From the start this who-dunnit keeps you on thhe edge of Highway 1 and the stunning West Coast of California. Bodies galore, a young and ambitious lady cop facing all the prejudices of her profession, and enough twists and turns to keep one readingfor over 300 pages. Great first work by author BOB BURNETT.

Kate Swift is a U.S. Marshall entering a trauma-recovery workshop. Not only does she find herself knee-deep in a murder investigation, but life throws her another curve ball – a hot steamy romance and potential relationship! But to enjoy her newfound love and learn to trust again, Kate must find the killer before he strikes again.

The author, Bob Burnett, creates a hot steamy romance tinged with murder and mystery. Each character is fairly well-developed and captivating. The plotline and twists are creative, establishing a solid foundation. The challenges showcase Kate’s strength, and leadership skills and authenticate her character. I found the storyline itself engaging and interesting, and I enjoyed learning about the secondary characters which was important to build the character relationships with one another and the listener.

The narrator, Rebecca Castelli did a good job of telling the story. The story was told mainly from the male’s point of view and the lack of “designated voices” for the different characters made it difficult for me to keep the story straight. Castelli did insert energy and appropriate pauses to interject the appropriate level of mystery and action. I found her voice pleasant to hear.

Overall, this is an interesting and well-written book that will leave whodunit enthusiasts wanting more Kate and Tom!

I loved the book! The author’s use of a range of characters was entertaining throughout the story and it culminated with a surprise ending.
Hoping to see more books sharing the adventures of US Marshall Kate Swift.

The Satori Institute is a place where people go to attend workshops and therapy sessions while also enjoying the spectacular views and hot springs baths. One of the workshops is called Transitions and it is for people who are going through or thinking about making changes in their lives. Two of the participants are a successful business owner named Tom Scott and US Marshal Kate Swift. On the very first day of their stay one of the founders is found dead.
I liked the characters a lot. They’re deftly fleshed out and interesting. Much of the story is told from Tom’s point of view. Plot is clever and well developed. Seems like about half the story is the blossoming romance between Kate and Tom, and the other half is the murder mystery. I read a finished copy. My only complaint would be that it has a fairly large number of typos. That may not bother other readers, but they bug the heck out of me. 3.75 stars
