Sweet story with very real, likable characters. Low key humor and story line kept me engaged the whole way through. Looking forward to his next book.

I haven't laughed so much in a long time. Although the story is set in London, it seems Richard Roper had a window into my workplace in California. In addition to his great wit, Mr. Roper has a way of communicating the awkwardness of the main character that made me feel like he understood my personality challenges, which are not as unique as I might have imagined. Really, they seem all part of the human condition.. A gem of a book!!

I have to say it took me quite awhile to finish this novel. It just did not catch me in any way.
That being said, it was an interesting dark, love story revolving around death and loneliness.
Andrew takes a job as an investigator of sorts in London, England. He investigates homes after a person has expired and no family is found. Andrew goes into these homes in search of any information to find a survivor and any monies that will help with the burial of these individuals.
When Andrew meets another worker, Peggy in this job, he begins to fall in love. Can that continue and survive?
This is that journey as well as Andrew's story with his family and his life growing up.
The descriptions of the scenes were definitely well written. It did help me continue with this book.

I am retired librarian who reads a LOT. I usually read suspense, thrillers and such. This was a departure for me and one that I believe the Universe rather engineered. The book that was next in my que just quietly disappeared and Something to Live For popped up. I felt I wasn't in the mood, but began reading it during dinner. In no time at all, I was spitting my wine out while laughing. I loved everything about this book, the characters, the humor, the poignancy, the profound truths hidden under cynical humor (which I adore). I can honestly say I enjoyed this novel more than any I have read in a long time. And that's quite a statement, as I usually read two novels a week. Any book that produces both tears of laughter and tears of empathy/joy must be acknowledged as special. Well done, sir!

A story about honesty, loneliness and hope, this first novel is a psychological study in overcoming loss and finding love.

Something to live for. Richard Roper

A thoroughly entertaining book. The story starts by helping you realise and appreciate the people working behind the scenes. We learn early on that the main character, Andrew, whilst fulfilling his work duties with all the care and consideration required, (although not necessarily always a given by other people), is himself living dangerously on the same edge his clients had found themselves.
It’s a story that teaches the gravity of a small white lie and how it can snowball and morph into a lifestyle.
A story explaining, without apology the results of ones upbringing and childhood. And of course, how lives experience form the man.
This book had me laughing out loud, quietly sobbing, frustrated and hoping the romance will win through.
Recommended reading for everyone who’s ever lived.

4.0 out of 5 stars The power of Love, Truth, and Hope
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2020
Andrew is living the perfect lie: he’s married to Diane and they have two children and a large family home. The innocence of this lie snowballs rapidly after a successful interview with the local council for a job in Death Administration. Bereaved at a young age, Andrew has had more than his fair share of loss. But in truth, family life on any level doesn’t exist for Andrew – he’s something of a nerdy loner, preferring his own company to socialising, and he’d much prefer to forget about his past. His job for the council is both fascinating and sad, and arranging funerals for those who’ve died alone touches a nerve in Andrew and he becomes steadily more concerned about his own fate. When Peggy joins the office her forthright personality draws out something of the man Andrew used to be, and a friendship blossoms. But a team-building exercise based on Come Dine With Me, is poised to blow everything apart and Andrew’s entire life looks set to be exposed – the rundown flat he shares with his model railway, the difficult relationship with his sister and her husband… and what happened to the real Diane.

Dark humour with a strong and original message about family ties. I found this read a slow burn to start but my enjoyment rapidly increased as the novel developed, and I loved the final third. Although there are dark themes – death, loneliness, depression, funerals – the satirical humour bubbles beneath the surface and the narrative remains witty and engaging. The secondary characters are relatable, colourful and interesting, and these subplots compliment the main story and add complex layers. There are numerous sad circumstances throughout, but it is also about the potential of love, truth, and hope, and the light these powers can bring to the darkest of places.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read

This was lovely. The protagonist is so likeable and gentle. Very funny book with appealing and natural characters and the odd baddie although greedy rather than evil.
A good read and a well devised plot.
