Such a good story so far!
Looking forward to the next 3!

Shadows was a really surprising read for me. So surprising, that after I read the ebook from Netgalley, I ran on the internet to buy a physical copy because I felt compelled to own a copy for when I would inevitably re-read it.

I liked Gaby in this book so much. She was obviously very grief-stricken because of losing her twin brother, but she never let that hinder her. Gaby was always very strong and bright. She never blindly accepted everything; she had questions, and she wanted answers. That never made her annoying to me; in fact, it actually made learning about the angel lore in the book better because we know as much as Gaby did: nothing.

I found the pace to be very strong. From the beginning it captures you, and it gets gradually faster as the story goes on. I couldn’t help but keep reading to know what was going on. I actually left everything on hold so I could finish this story. I was THAT enthralled.

I actually really enjoyed the romance in this book, but I know that most people wouldn’t like it because it seemed like insta-love. But to me it wasn’t insta-love at all. Rafa and Gaby sparked a connection, because they have a past (even if Gaby can’t remember it), but their romance is not overpowering the plot. Plus… they have incredible chemistry. I wanted to lock them in a room together so they can work out their differences.

The angel lore in this book is great! It’s not much different than other angel books, like… Angelfall, but I found it was much more intense in this book! The relationship between the fallen angels and the demons is all very life and death, and there’s a very powerful civil war between the angels themselves. I ate it all up and wanted to know more.

The only thing that bugged me about the book is the fact that everyone from Gaby’s past got mad at her because she didn’t know things she was supposed to. Hello…. SHE HAS AMNESIA! They would get mad at her and put her on some ridiculous standards even though she COULDN’T REMEMBER ANYTHING! This was the most annoying part of the book, honestly.

This book is a perfect combination of angel lore, humor, strong characters, and action. The ending was action packed, but managed to have some closure. I’m glad that there wasn’t a cliffhanger, even though there’s obviously some opening for the next book. I definitely recommend this if you’re looking for another angel-themed book after finishing the Penryn and the End of Days series (Angelfall) by Susan Ee.

I seem to spend most of my time reading well researched well reviewed books these days since I became addicted to Kindle, and many of the books that are out there are easy to be distracted from due to either poor continuity, poor storyline, poor accuracy or all of the above.

This book is an absolute breath of fresh air. Extremely well written, fantastic descriptive detail, highly believable and engaging characters, and the sort of prose you would expect from someone who is clearly a professional writer, and has been writing for a long time. I finished the book in about 3 sittings, simply unable to put it down. Who is this Gabe? What happened to her? Is Rafa on her side or does he have his own agenda? Is Daniel all he's cracked up to be? Does he really believe in everything he is trying to represent or does he have his own agenda? Written in first person from the perspective of Gaby, a young woman who has recently lost her brother and most of the memory of her former life, in car accident...or so someone would have her believe, you start to actually embody her sense of confusion as she tries to make sense of who she is, who the people around her are, why they all know her, why they are scared of her.

What was she? What were her beliefs? With whom was she aligned? As she discovers that she is no innocent confused teen, but the offspring of a fallen Angel, part of the Rephaim, an organisation trying to gain favour with the Host of Heaven by delivering their fallen from grace fathers to the gates of Hell.....

Written in a fast paced, witty, belivable and modern context, this book is a rip-roaring fantastic read. Its sexy, full of action, Angels, Demons, battles, what more could you want in a book?

To the Author, a fantastic start to a great series, I eagerly await your next instalment!! Well done on your first book!

To the readers of this review, Do yourself a favour and snap this one up!

Awe.
Some.
Some. Some.
I really liked this book. It's a different twist to most other nephilim/fallen angel books i've read but it's done in such a way and with the perfect kind of characters that makes you stay up past your bed time just to know what will happen next.
A whole lot of the time i was actually talking to myself, the book, my shadow, the air and asking "What the heck is going on!" I love that kind of book. The kind that snags hold of my body, my brain and pulls me in so that I can not only relate to the main char, but actually feel the same kind of emotions.
This book is funny, entertaining, and well written, an intriguing story of one girl's sorrow and loss and life just isn't really what she thought it was. Add in angels and demons, monsters, hot, annoying, dangerous men, and sword fights and you have a book worth reading.
This is definitely a recommend from me.

Firstly I’d like to point out that these books are numbered incorrectly on Amazon. The order of the books are as follows:

Shadows is book 1 – incorrectly listed on Amazon as book 3
Haze is book 2 – correctly listed on Amazon
Shimmer is book 3 – incorrectly listed on Amazon as book 1
Burn is book 4 – correctly listed on Amazon

Secondly I’m writing this one review to cover all four books as I’ve read them in quick succession and I can’t quite separate one from the other right now without referring back to them. As such this review will be completely spoiler free as I know I would have been so disappointed if I’d accidentally stumbled across a spoiler for this series, it’s too good for spoilers. I won’t give you a description of what the books are about as you can pick that up from the blurb. What I will do is give you my thoughts and emotions on the book.

I’ve said before I wish the Goodreads and Amazon would give the option of a six star review but limit the amount of times it could be given so people didn’t waste it, a bit like the golden buzzer in Britain’s Got Talent. You would use this only on those occasions that a book really exceeded all expectations, when you felt like you’d lived the book, when you felt like the characters were your friends and family and you went through every emotion right there with them. If I could give this book six stars and a golden buzzer I wouldn’t hesitate.

I’ve had this book on my wishlist for a while. I’ve hummed and ahhed and felt unsure whether (a) I wanted to commit to another series and (b) would it fulfil my expectations. So five days ago, having been given a gift voucher for Amazon, I decided to take the plunge. I have spent the last five days in this story, five days of leaving dishes piling up in the sink, eating toast because it’s too time consuming to cook a proper meal, getting the bus into work rather than walking, all because I haven’t been able to put this series down. If I’d been able to book a day off work to read then I would have, no worries about wasting a day of my holiday. This series was better than awesome. I’m both saddened and relieved to have finished it. Sad because I have to say goodbye to characters I feel really attached to, but relieved because my life can start again now. It’s been a fantastic read from start to finish. I started the first book with trepidation, as I always do when I have high hopes for a book. And I’ll admit as first impressions went the first few chapters weren’t doing it for me. I thought it was going to be another one of those insta-love situations with lame characters, cheesy writing and no doubt flimsy plot. If it hadn’t been for the good reviews I’d read I probably would have given up quite quickly. But I pushed on and I’m so, so glad I did as I couldn’t have been more wrong. Once I got past that first bit of the book everything kicked in perfectly. As the story progressed it was obvious why the book started the way it did and it fitted into the bigger story really well.

The characters are well fleshed out and developed nicely through the books, everyone had a voice of their own, a story to tell and all had their own complexities. In addition to the main characters I got to know all the supporting cast too and I’ll miss them all. The relationships were both complex and fun. And the romance was perfect. No insta love, no swooning or mooning to be had anywhere. I loved Rafa and Gaby (oh how I loved Rafa, he’s right up there fighting for top spot on my list of book boyfriends). They are full of attitude and the dialogue between them was fun. They have this complex history of distrust and anger between them which confuses Gaby during the first couple of books (as you’ll know from the blurb she has no memory of who she really is) and this was paced well throughout the series. Answers aren’t given quickly in this series and you are always looking forward to finding out more. And that doesn’t just apply to the romance, it applies to everything from the plot and background story, the action and the relationships between the rephailm. The rephailm are split into two groups, divided by years of distrust and violence, yet they all also have history and you just know it wasn’t always this way.

Usually with a series of books there is always one that is that little bit less than the others, one that you feel was maybe just a gap filler for the sake of extending the series and could have been easily condensed into the other books. Not with this series; every book was relevant and interesting and just the right length. Each book picks up exactly where the last one finished and flowed perfectly. At the start of each new book Paula Weston has done an excellent job of reminding the reader of where each book as left off without being boring or repetitive, just in case you’ve had to wait a while for the next book to come out. That wasn’t a problem for me as I started each new book as soon as I’d finished the last. Everything was brilliantly thought out and delivered.

The last book was just the most amazing end to the series. Nothing was rushed or brushed over. I’m sure whilst I was reading the last 30-40% my facial expression would have mirrored that of the painting ‘the scream’! The tension was high and the action fast paced and full on. I really had no idea what would happen next and my emotions were all over the place.

There are four books in total, with the last one being released on 6 August here in UK but I managed to get a copy as it’s already been released in Australia (and I just couldn’t wait the three weeks for it to be released here). So to sum it up, if you haven’t started this series yet and are wondering whether to give it a go, please do. Paula Weston has bumped right to the top of my favourite author list and deserves more recognition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping And Mesmerizing Tale!
Reviewed in Canada on May 20, 2016
"Shadows" the first book in the addictive Rephaim series blends war, angels and romance into a fantasy that begins with a nightmare and the consequences of the release of a short story that leaves Gaby (Gabriella) Winters in shock and looking for answers. Paula Weston sets the stage in Pandanus Beach in Australia where Gaby struggles to live a normal life with her friend Maggie after being injured in an accident that supposedly killed her twin brother. Plagued by grief and dreams of killing demons and other hellions, one night at the local bar her world turns upside down when she meets Rafe, her brother's best friend and discovers what she believes are only only shadows of her past.

In a gripping and mesmerizing tale of secrets, lies and deception Paula Weston brings to life the world of demons, angels, and a hybrid race spawned by angelic fallen who were locked away after impregnating human women. After escaping their confinement Nathaniel, one of the Fallen Angels hoping to find redemption refuses to join the lustful band under Semyaza's leadership; instead he builds a sanctuary for their children. It is this army of warriors, the Rephaim that Nathaniel's trained to hunt for the elusive fugitives to return them to hell.

This fast-paced, action-packed plot heats up when Gaby not only discovers that she was once a skilled Rephaite warrior but that her memories have been fabricated and her brother might still be alive. Suspense begins to build from the moment Gaby senses a dark figure shadowing her in the rainforest, continually escalating when she's interrogated by former comrades in Sanctuary, and is forced to fight hellions and demons to free her friend Maggie. Twisting biblical history and prophecy into a fascinating page-turner the story progresses quickly and smoothly, the harshness and brutality of the violence often tempered by witty banter and the steamy romance blossoming between Gaby and Rafe.

In a roller-coaster ride that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat Paula Weston has created unforgettable and complex characters that infuse the story with passion, high-energy, and drama. Grief-stricken Gaby Winters struggling with the tragic loss of her twin and haunted by nightmares is gritty in her determination to find answers. Strong-willed and defiant, unwilling at first to believe the truth of her past, Gaby is open-minded enough to question and accept the irrational. Attracted to cocky, arrogant but thoughtful Rafa a skilled warrior who left the Rephaim Sanctuary with her brother is annoyingly secretive and constantly infuriates Gaby with his sense of superiority. Their chemistry ignites when she first meets him at a local bar , although their steamy romance is hindered by secrets and half truths. In contrast " pretty boy" Daniel one of the Rephaim's ruling Council of Five and Gabe's previous boyfriend is an abusive torturer underneath his moral and upright guise.

Although overflowing with coarse language , "Shadows" is an intoxicating plot with a score of intriguing characters and I rate it as a "to-be-watched" series.
