Neoliberalism is fracturing, but what will emerge in its wake?

The global political, ecological, economic, and social breakdown—symbolized by Trump’s election—has destroyed faith that neoliberal capitalism is beneficial to the majority. Nancy Fraser explores how this faith was built through the late twentieth century by balancing two central tenets: recognition (who deserves rights) and distribution (who deserves income). When these begin to fray, new forms of outsider populist politics emerge on the left and the right.

These, Fraser argues, are symptoms of the larger crisis of hegemony for neoliberalism, a moment when, as Gramsci had it, “the old is dying and the new cannot be born.”

In an accompanying interview with Jacobin publisher Bhaskar Sunkara, Fraser argues that we now have the opportunity to build progressive populism into an emancipatory social force.

Ever wonder what Sean Hannity is blathering about when he talks about “uncovering the Deep State”? This book gives an answer, I think. Not really a “book,” but a reprint of an article Nancy Fraser contributed to the journal American Affairs. The insight is short and sweet and better than soldiering through an entire book. Analyzing in terminology originating from the Marxist theorist, Antonio Gramsci, Fraser traces the political development of neoliberalism from the last twenty-five years to the present. She analyzes what she calls “progressive neoliberalsim” — essentially neoliberal policy in progressive window-dressing, neoliberalism with a happy face — the political consequences of which brought us the current occupant of the White House. His brand of neoliberalism is more virulent than the former. He has gone back to all the promises made during the 2016 campaign, made matters worse for his political base, but they don’t care. He has tapped into their extreme disaffection in the electorate caused by progressive neoliberalism and made that disaffection worse, by causing as one observer commented, opening up a deep wound and continually prodding it with a hot poker. It is neoliberalism with an angry, blood-thirsty face.

In her view the current political landscape is a conflict between two warring neoliberal classes. However, she does not leave us hanging, like many other similar books. She posits the emergence of a true populist progressive movement to resolve the contradiction of these two warring tribes; otherwise the situation will get worse, if that is possible. Time will tell how things will play out on that.

There is also a conversation between Fraser and Bakshar Sunkara editor of Jacobin Magazine, repeating and elaborating on this new populist progressive movement.

So the next time you see Hannity’s smug face talk about the evils of the “Deep State,” what he is really saying is a paid advertisement for Trump’s brand of neoliberalism. But the new cannot be born from the dying. Fraser is optimistic in saying that neoliberalism is a spent concept, eaten alive by Trump’s angrier type of neoliberalism, and from the ashes this truly populist progressive movement will emerge.

An interesting read of the current estimate of u s’ social political and economic situation through a new-ish lens. This lens highlights both the good bad and hypocritical in the current two party system. Solutions to this and the economic problems are sketched out and feel ‘elusive’ but they are documented.

A quick but important read.

To grasp the fundamental premise of this book, you need only read the title and probably the first 10 pages. To summarize: neoliberalism (and, more insidiously, neoliberalism that co-opts the rhetoric of progressive movements) is making a last ditch attempt to hold onto power, and has allowed for right-wing populism to take hold (viola, Trump). The solution is left-wing, progressive populism embodied by Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders. Fraser goes to pains to critique both right-wing populism and progressive neoliberalism, but is notably silent on how to create a progressive populist movement, and what it could possibly look like in contrast with progressive neoliberalism. In that regard, the book is merely a lengthy critique of the status quo. That would be fine if there was anything new or interesting about the critique, or if it lived up to the promise of its title (the title is taken from Gramsci, and the book is billed as a sort of critical engagement with Gramsci's work). It doesn't, and it suffers as a result.
