Editorial Reviews

Review

"Janet Thompson knows mentoring. She's lived it, breathed it, taught it, and remains as passionate about it today as she was 20 years ago when I met her. In Mentoring for All Seasons she will encourage, inspire, and thoroughly equip you to join her in answering God's call to impact the next generation of women." -- Cindi McMenamin, pastor's wife, longtime women's ministry director, and author of several books incl "Mentoring for All Seasons"

"With a wide range of topics, and covering the vastly different seasons in a Christian woman's life, Mentoring for All Seasons teaches how to find, or be, the mentor Jesus desires. With wisdom, joy and experience Janet Thompson guides Christian women though the seasons of life, and offers hope and help on the much needed subject of mentoring." -- Laura Petherbridge, Speaker and Author of When "I Do" Becomes "I Don't," The Smart Stepmom, 101Tips "Mentoring for All Seasons"

Up Close and Practical
This up close, personal and practical book by Janet Thompson, I believe is the most comprehensive mentoring manuscript in the market. It is personal, because it shares intimate and raw stories by mentors and mentees. It’s practical because it gives wonderful mentor and mentee tips and God’s perspective. Each chapter is tied up with a bow with the application: “Let’s Talk About It.” This masterpiece covers every season and difficulty of a woman’s life including step-moms, empty nesters, illness and health, infertility, abuse, gender identity and much more. Janet has captured the essence of mentoring and poured it into the pages of her latest book, MENTORING FOR ALL SEASONS. Well done Janet.

Reviewed by Tammy Keene: Janet Thompson's Mentoring for All Seasons is every woman's guide to mentoring. Janet provides a practical definition of what it means to mentor: simply sharing life together. Her book walks the mentor through the steps of finding a mentee and helps the mentee find a mentor. This book is so much more than just a simple how to find your mentor or mentee. It is a resource that every woman needs. Whether you are in a formal mentor/mentee relationship, this book provides invaluable information. In addition, to Janet's instruction, you will read testimonies from mentors and mentees, sharing how they were blessed by their mentoring relationships.

"No one expects you to have memorized the Bible or be a Bible scholar to qualify as a mentor; you just need to have lived life, observed God at work in the seasons of your life, and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit." (Janet Thompson, p. 60) "Mentoring encompasses guidance, accountability, spiritual growth and friendship: one woman sharing her life experiences and her faith in God with another woman who could use help with her current life season." (Janet Thompson, p. 88)

This is the best book I’ve read on spiritual mentoring, hands down. Janet Thompson begins with an introduction explaining how she came to start a mentoring ministry. Section One explains the biblical call to mentor, how churches can avoid generation gaps in their ministries, and the basics of connecting mentors with mentees.

Section Two Describes life seasons and the type of mentoring women need in each season. For each season, Thompson gives tips for both mentors and mentees, Scriptures to discuss, personal stories from mentors and mentees, a short Bible story, and discussion questions. I particularly liked Thompson’s guidelines for establishing boundaries so no one feels like they’re being asked for more time than they’ve agreed to give, and for making sure expectations are clearly discussed up front.

The epilogue finishes with a variety of short topics such as tips on choosing a mentor, setting realistic expectations, Do’s and Don’ts, mentor vulnerability, advice for when mentoring is hard, and resources.

I highly recommend this book for Christian women who want to both grow spiritually and help others grow.

Many women hesitate to mentor because they don't feel equipped. "What if they ask me a question I don't know the answer to?" "I'm sure there's information in the Bible on that topic, but I don't know where it is..." Author Janet Thompson has provided a practical, needed resource for all mentors in her book, Mentoring for All Seasons. Readers can search by topic (abortion, care-giving, divorce, empty nest, single parenting, illness, abuse, etc.) and find Biblical examples, tips, scripture, and questions to guide their discussion. Filled with stories from real-life mentors and mentees, Janet shares how women can walk through all the seasons of life with one another. This is a resource book every mentor and every women's ministry leader needs to add to her shelf!

Janet Thompson did an incredible job putting together a collection of mentoring stories that not only shows the importance of being a mentor but the successes of those being mentored. I was privileged to be included in "Mentoring for All Seasons" as both mentor and mentee. Having a mentor to guide us through life's ups and downs releases us from isolation and gives us hope and having someone to mentor allows us to use our own successes and failures as an example....and a reminder of how blessed we truly are. This book is a must-read for young and old and inspires everyone to reach out and help one another.

Janet's passion for mentoring the younger generation shines through in this book. It's not netely a collection Of stories and opinions but is jam packed with stories of "M and M's" ( mentors and mentees) who boldly share their experiences about mentoring to encourage those considering heeding the call to fulfill Titus 2's command.

Thompson's Mentoring for All Seasons contains a richness for all women regardless of age, race, and culture. God has a plan for every woman, and Thompson shows women how to use mentoring to accomplish God's purpose in their lives. The guidelines, how-to, and realistic expectations make this book a must-read for every woman who is interested in mentoring or being mentored. Also a good group Bible study for women.
