Mentoring for All Seasons: Sharing Life Experiences and God's Faithfulness Paperback – September 12, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Women often don't think they know enough to be a mentor, or fear rejection if they ask someone to mentor them. Others don't think they need mentoring. However, throughout the Bible, God calls spiritually younger and older women to learn from and teach one another.
Mentoring for All Seasons helps answer questions like these:
- What is mentoring?
- How do I find a mentor?
- Why does God want us to mentor one another?
- What are the blessings of mentoring?
Through true stories from mentors and mentees in life seasons from tween through death--along with the author's personal experiences, helpful tips, Scriptures to study together, and biblical mentoring relationship examples--Mentoring for All Seasons encourages women to be intentional about sharing their life experiences and God's faithfulness with other women.

About the authors
I have a wonderful husband who is my helpmate in ministry, and four children who have blessed us with eleven beautiful grandchildren. I founded the Woman to Woman Mentoring Ministry at Saddleback Church in 1996 and train other churches to start mentoring ministries. I wrote the Woman to Woman Mentoring How to Start, Grow, and Maintain a Mentoring Ministry resources which are still in print, including the DVD Leader's Kit, and are available exclusively at my website www.womantowomanmentoring.com.
The seven studies in the Face-to-Face Bible study series are written to do on your own, two friends or mentor and mentee to do together, or as group study. Each study has a Leader's Guide.
The Team That Jesus Built is a practical, how-to book for building a women's ministry team or to enhancing a current team.
I have had two recurrences since my first breast cancer diagnosis in 2002 when I had the opportunity to write the book I longed to have, Dear God, They Say It's Cancer: A Companion Guide for Women on the Breast Cancer Journey (Howard Books/Simon & Schuster).
There are now two more Dear God, books: Dear God, Why Can't I Have a Baby? and Dear God, He's Home! A Woman's Guide to Her Stay-at-Home Man (New Hope Publishers, March 2013.
Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter: Hope, Help, & Encouragement for Hurting Parents tells the story of how I, and other hurting parents, learned to trust God and find peace in praying to Him for our children. This book is also applicable to parents of prodigal sons.
My two most recent books are Forsaken God?: Remembering the Goodness of God Our Culture Has Forgotten and Mentoring for All Seasons: Sharing Life Experiences and God's Faithfulness.
My writing, speaking, and editing ministry is About His Work Ministries.
After living in Southern California my entire life, we moved to the mountains of Idaho and love the slower pace! But the Lord continues to keep me About His Work!
An author and speaker, Shirley wrote Sisterhood of Faith: 365 Life Changing Stories About Women Who Made a Difference to showcase the contributions of women down through the Christian era. The book received the Young Voices Foundation 2009 Gold Award in the category of Inspirational/Spiritual. Her second book, Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides, was written with two younger friends, Janine Boyer and Kim Messinger.
The three women call themselves Friends of the Heart to share in a speaking ministry. Their heartbeat is to help women become all God calls them to be, and they relish opportunities to lead women's retreats and events. They offer funny skits, serious talks, songs by Kim and dramatic presentations of lengthy passages of scripture from memory by Shirley. "No one expects you to have memorized the Bible or be a Bible scholar to qualify as a mentor; you just need to have lived life, observed God at work in the seasons of your life, and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit." (Janet Thompson, p. 60) "Mentoring encompasses guidance, accountability, spiritual growth and friendship: one woman sharing her life experiences and her faith in God with another woman who could use help with her current life season." (Janet Thompson, p. 88)
Section Two Describes life seasons and the type of mentoring women need in each season. For each season, Thompson gives tips for both mentors and mentees, Scriptures to discuss, personal stories from mentors and mentees, a short Bible story, and discussion questions. I particularly liked Thompson’s guidelines for establishing boundaries so no one feels like they’re being asked for more time than they’ve agreed to give, and for making sure expectations are clearly discussed up front.
The epilogue finishes with a variety of short topics such as tips on choosing a mentor, setting realistic expectations, Do’s and Don’ts, mentor vulnerability, advice for when mentoring is hard, and resources.
I highly recommend this book for Christian women who want to both grow spiritually and help others grow.
