'Blows assumptions about abusive relationships out of the water' CAITLIN MORAN
'Offers a strategy for intervention that would save lives' INDEPENDENT
Every four days in the UK, a woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner - and in the past year, domestic abuse has become an epidemic.
For thirty years, Jane Monckton Smith has been fighting to change this. A former police officer and internationally renowned professor of public protection, she has developed her ground-breaking research into an eight-stage homicide timeline, laying out identifiable stages in which coercive relationships can escalate to violence and murder.
Drawing on disciplines including psychology, sociology and law, Monckton Smith talks to victims, their families and killers to piece together the hows and whys of abuse - while shining a searching light onto the society and media that allow it to thrive.

Several people I know had previously read the book and all spoke about it being a powerful experience.
The author writes in a straight forward way that is accessible. She uses legal terms but always explains them. I work in the court system and am often frustrated with books that try to illustrate failings but I was impressed with this book. Jane Monkton Smith considers the progress that has been made in how society handles domestic abuse then goes on to argue that so much more can be done.
I try not to generalise and I was uncomfortable initially with the author's use of statements such as "women are", "men do this", etc. My revelation was that she is right though and she provides all sorts of statistics to prove it.
The book was first published in 2021, allowing the effects of the #MeToo movement to be considered. This makes opinions and research feel very current.
It's noticeable (and a huge positive) that a good proportion of the research is focused on the victim and the reasons for that are discussed at length. After a murder the attention usually goes to the perpetrator and it is surprising how revealing it is to look at a crime from a different perspective.
The premise of the book is to explore the escalation of dangerous relationships and that is achieved. She looks at the progress from the intensity of a new relationship, through coercive control and stalking, then (potentially) to murder or suicide.
If I knew someone in this situation I suspect the book would terrify me but I would also feel empowered to act in some way. I would like to have seem more about the work being done to stop the abuse but I guess that is for another book.
Stalking is discussed about two thirds through and that is the most revealing section. The patterns of behaviour and variety of approaching are just astounding - it is no surprise that the justice system struggles to keep up with this area of the law.
Everyone should read this book.
