The 2023 Pura Belpré Award-winning young adult novel!

Mysterious disappearances. An urban legend rumored to be responsible. And one group of friends determined to save their city at any cost. Stranger Things meets Jordan Peele in this acclaimed novel from an incredible new voice.

For over a year, the Bronx has been plagued by sudden disappearances that no one can explain. Sixteen-year-old Raquel does her best to ignore it. After all, the police only look for the white kids. But when her crush Charlize's cousin goes missing, Raquel starts to pay attention―especially when her own mom comes down with a mysterious illness that seems linked to the disappearances.

Raquel and Charlize team up to investigate, but they soon discover that everything is tied to a terrifying urban legend called the Echo Game. The game is rumored to trap people in a sinister world underneath the city, and the rules are based on a particularly dark chapter in New York's past. And if the friends want to save their home and everyone they love, they will have to play the game and destroy the evil at its heart―or die trying.

I'm a huge horror nerd, so I snapped this one up the moment I saw that cover. But Tirado manages to add so much more than scares to this story. Familial bonds, friendship, love, history, spirituality, and so much more. Raquel is a character I'd follow through after what she and her friends & family went through here? She deserves a nice, boring life that wouldn't make for good reading... Though I'm betting that if anyone could make a boring life interesting, it'd be this author. Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

So this book had me on the edge of me seat from the beginning. I was intrigued by the mystery of the Echo, train, and finding a long lost friend. As the story progressed, so did my interest. It wasn’t til the last few chapters that I wish he story ended differently then it did. For that is why I gave 4 stars.

I'm in love the story telling, the spiritualism, the love story what more can I ask for. One of my top books I have read this year thus far

This book had me on the edge of my seat a few different times. The writing style and descriptions of some of the “monsters” gave a sense of tension and fear.
I enjoyed the story quite a bit. The idea of two worlds and crossing between the two with little to no warning was very interesting.
My only criticism was the constant repetition of the characters repeating what they thought was happening but because the characters around them didn’t believe them, it was repeated several times. I think perhaps changing the descriptions and the dialog in those repetitive moments could help the book be a bit more engaging.
However I did quite enjoy the story and would give it a solid 4 stars.

I loved the descriptions and the storyline. It was eerie and the author was amazing at painting the picture in my imagination. I definitely recommend it for teens and adults who love history and a creepy vibe!

I am so glad I read this book. The thing I liked most was that the central plot of the story was not the romance. I loved learning more about the history of the Bronx through the thriller, and I really liked all of the characters. Sometimes I got lost in the description of the Echo, like maybe that part needed to be slowed down with dialogue or action so more detail would help me have a clearer visual of the setting. But maybe the goal was to be unclear to match the disorienting feeling they had in the Echo. The romance between the girls was subtle and a small part of the plot, but still felt important. It not being that main storyline made it feel more natural and I liked that.

This book hit so many topics - concise, brutal. I could have easily finished in one day. Very well written. I certainly became obsessed.
Raquel is a total icon - struggling with her sexuality; her mom falls under the sickness, forcing her to reconnect with her estranged father; embracing her community - her found family; the strength to keep going back until it ends on her terms.
Racism - the history of Raquel's neighborhood; first generation of those who fled war/starvation/death in homelands. With the use of horror, urban legends and facing demons.
I could go on. One of my best books of this year.

Couldn’t even get past the second chapter. I’m sure the book is as good as the majority of reviews say. The beginning is unreadable to me.
That being said, the dynamic displayed between the MC and their father feels real. If you can get passed politically-charged events in a book, I’m sure you’ll like it.
