“Like a good friend who knows the territory through hard-won personal experience, Rebekkah LaDyne shows that you have everything you need for well-being right inside of you. Written in an engaging, accessible style, The Mind-Body Stress Reset offers simple yet profound science-based tools that train you to self-regulate your stress and connect with your optimal self. You don’t have to go down the rabbit hole of your mind. You can learn how to connect with the wisdom of the body that helps you be grounded and not miss the blessing of being alive. A truly excellent contribution.”
—James Baraz, MA, cofounding teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and coauthor of Awakening Joy
“The Mind-Body Stress Reset does just what the title claims. Drawing deeply from the traditions of somatics, yoga, mindfulness, and contemporary research, Rebekkah LaDyne presents a pragmatic and user-friendly approach to addressing stress in a way that is accessible, useful, and effective!”
—Mariana Caplan, PhD, MFT, author of Yoga and Psyche and Eyes Wide Open
“I highly recommend Rebekkah LaDyne’s book for anyone who has ever experienced anxiety, worry, and tension. Here is a practical guide for enhancing well-being by building resilience. Her approach is well supported by research on somatic therapies and mind-body medicine. LaDyne shows readers effective skills to ‘reset’ their mind-body baseline. She challenges us to try the skill exercises and achieve a mind-body reset in our lives.”
—Donald Moss, PhD, dean of the college of integrative medicine and health sciences at Saybrook University, coauthor of Pathways to Illness and Pathways to Health, and author of Integrative Pathways
“A highly readable manual for life! Offering simple yet effective exercises and surveys to identify and survive modern-day stresses. Creatively written with an excellent mixture of science, research, and self-disclosure, all of which give credibility and depth to Rebekkah LaDyne’s knowledge. I highly recommend.”
—Ariel Giarretto, LMFT, SEP, Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Institute senior faculty, and internationally recognized somatic psychotherapist
“In an accessible and easy-to-follow way, Rebekkah LaDyne has given the lay reader a clear way to understand stress responses and how to manage them with simple, straightforward strategies. With lightly humorous writing, LaDyne provides a researched overview that should capture readers’ creative imaginations to reduce their stress reactions with helpful checklists and exercises that can be done anywhere. The science that supports her writing and ideas is described simply, and will make all readers comfortable in trying the suggestions she offers.”
—Dave Berger, MFT, PT, SEP, Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Institute senior faculty, and internationally recognized somatic psychotherapist
“Rebekkah LaDyne combines three powerful and evocative tools: the mental, emotional, and somatic aspects of the human body as long-lasting, natural defenses against stress in a sometimes-chaotic world. By hacking the mind-body connection in concert, her well-supported methods recognize that the body also needs a voice in maintaining balance. It is with joy and respect that I recommend her book to those of us that need help in remembering that balance.”
—Elena Gillespie, PhD, adjunct faculty of mind-body medicine at Saybrook University, and author of The Anatomy of Death
“Rebekkah LaDyne has written a wise, practical, and insightful guide to working with adversity and stress. Weaving relevant theory with evidence-based practice, LaDyne offers a powerful road map for safe and transformative body-based practice. It is clearly written, full of heart, and an outstanding contribution to the field.”
—David Treleaven, PhD, author of Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness
“Somatic intelligence is often a neglected or rather forgotten territory. Rebekkah LaDyne shows us with her remarkable book how much potential for healing opens up once we invite this intelligence into our consciousness, and give it space to balance out the wounds of trauma and neglect. The book is a wonderful blend of scientifically based theory and playful exercises. I wish the whole world would read it—I see it as a guide into health, happiness, and joyful living.”
—Urs Honauer, PhD,SEP, Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Institute senior faculty, and director of the Center for Inner Ecology in Zurich, Switzerland

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2020I found LaDyne's book really helpful. I teach mindfulness meditation and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and although the Mindfulness practices I teach are incredibly useful for many people, I have as a teacher encountered some folks that find meditation increases rather than decreases their anxiety and stress response. This book is for them and for anyone who teaches meditation practices. Healing is not a one-size-fits-all thing, and LaDyne skillfully shares practices or adaptations to practices that can help support those dealing with a high degree of acute stress (or anyone!).
She shares the science of the brain and the stress response in a clear, readable way, and intersperses personal stories that helps to make it relatable and relevant.
I recommend this book for anyone dealing with a high degree of stress and anxiety, especially if you have found that meditation and/or talk therapy have not helped you in the way you had hoped. I think it is also useful and important reading for anyone teaching mindfulness meditation and other healing practices.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2022Great book with several somatic exercises, well explained and how and where to use them. Useful for very stressful situations, traumas flashbacks.
If you're new to somatic exercises and the nervous system, you may need to read some theory about it to understand some of the concepts in the book.
I will buy a paper copy. I have the kindle version.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2023As an SEP myself, I appreciate having such a clear and simple resource to share with my clients, which reiterates the work we do together in session. This is not necessarily a "how to" book, yet provides clear "practices" to implement daily in a hectic stressful world.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2022I purchased this book for some personal learning, as well as to support my clinical work in psychology. Overall it presented a good introduction to somatic practices - essentially retraining the nervous system to more readily navigate towards regulation. I particularly appreciated learning to focus more on my body's sensations associated with safety and regulation, and about stress imprinting.
In terms of the layout, at times it felt a little clunky and could benefit from being more concise. I thought there was too much time spent discussing why mindfulness and exposure therapy may be unhelpful for those who are particularly stressed. To my mind, somatic practices appear to incorporate elements of both mindfulness and graduated exposure. Maybe the important distinction is that of intensity, which I think the author did a good job of addressing with frequent reminders to take a gentle approach. As a side note, I would like to understand at which point focusing attention toward "safe" parts of the body, in essence becomes a form of avoidance of uncomfortable or distressing sensations. I'm sure there is good rationale; it's just something I would have like to have seen discussed further. Maybe a better distinction between stress and anxiety would have helped also, as they appeared to be used interchangeably at times.
A final critique, which I admit is more of a personal gripe with modalities of this nature, is they can have a tendency to reduce human suffering to a range of neurological processes, that we can 'hack' or modify to suit our needs. This seems reductive at times, and fails to accomodate the broader systems and narratives that bring life and healing (i.e. families, communities, meaning, purpose). I don't think a book like this is intended to address the 'big picture' concerns, but maybe a little wider scope would help to add value here.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2020As a primary care physician caring for people living with chronic stress and overwhelm The Mind-Body Stress Reset is a welcome addition to my clinical toolbox - one that I confidently share with patients and colleagues. Rebekkah brings her personal and professional experience to the conversation in an empathetic, easily relatable and humorous way that engages the reader and offers a very practical approach to better understanding and managing engrained patterns of thinking and feeling. Her explanation about what's happening and why is clear and data driven. The exercises that accompany each chapter offer a tangible way to being to engage in somatic work and move toward healthier stress response patterns and pathways. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with stress and overwhelm!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2023An excellent overview of somatic healing for handling negative behaviors evolved from past experiences which leave a negative footprint within our brains and within the body .
Somatic Healing therapy will help us become resilient to stresses and triggers as we humans are learning how to overcome negative things from our past which the body never forgets.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2022As a therapist and self proclaimed stressed out person, I thought this book gave easy and practical somatic tools to settle a stressed out system. Burn out is real, and everyone needs tools they can use on their own to self regulate. I highly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2022This is among the most valuable books I’ve ever read about taking control of our trauma responses. The psychoeducation part is spot on and the systematic exercises to calm ourselves down are specific and so helpful.

It well illustrates our ability to self regulate with the right support. And one kind of support is adding more tools in our toolbox, which this book is full of. There is so much we can do ourselves!
