Flipped Paperback – May 13, 2003
Purchase options and add-ons
The first time she saw him, she flipped. The first time he saw her, he ran. That was the second grade, but not much has changed by the seventh. Juli says: “My Bryce. Still walking around with my first kiss.” He says: “It’s been six years of strategic avoidance and social discomfort.” But in the eighth grade everything gets turned upside down: just as Bryce is thinking that there’s maybe more to Juli than meets the eye, she’s thinking that he’s not quite all he seemed.
This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny voices.
The updated anniversary edition contains 32 pages of extra backmatter: essays from Wendelin Van Draanen on her sources of inspiration, on the making of the movie of Flipped, on why she’ll never write a sequel, and a selection of the amazing fan mail she’s received.

From the Inside Flap
This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny new voices. Wendelin Van Draanen is at her best here with a knockout cast of quirky characters and a hilarious series of misunderstandings and missed opportunities. But underlying the humor are two teens in transition. They are each learning to look beyond the surface of people, both figuring out who they are, who they want to be, and who they want to be with.

All I've ever wanted is for Juli Baker to leave me alone For her to back off-you know, just give me some space.
It all started the summer before second grade when our moving van pulled into her neighborhood. And since we're now about done with the eighth grade, that, my friend, makes more than half a decade of strategic avoidance and social discomfort.
She didn't just barge into my life. She barged and shoved and wedged her way into my life. Did we invite her to get into our moving van and start climbing all over boxes? No! But that's exactly what she did, taking over and showing off like only Juli Baker can.
My dad tried to stop her. "Hey!" he says as she's catapulting herself on board. "What are you doing? You're getting mud everywhere!" So true, too. Her shoes were, like, caked with the stuff.
She didn't hop out, though. Instead, she planted her rear end on the floor and started pushing a big box with her feet. "Don't you want some help?" She glanced my Way. "It sure looks like you need it."
I didn't like the implication. And even though my dad had been tossing me the same sort of look all week, I could tell-he didn't like this girl either. "Hey! Don't do
that," he warned her. "There are some really valuable things in that box."
"Oh. Well, how about this one?" She scoots over to a box labeled LENox and looks my way again. "We should push it together!"
"No, no, no!" my dad says, then pulls her up by the arm. "Why don't you run along home? Your mother's probably wondering where you are."
This was the beginning of my soon-to-become-acute awareness that the girl cannot take a hint. Of any kind. Does she zip on home like a kid should when they've been invited to leave No. She says, "Oh, my mom knows where I am. She said it was fine." Then she points across the street and says, "We just live right over there."
My father looks to where she's pointing and mutters "Oh boy." Then he looks at me and winks as he says, "Bryce, isn't it time for you to go inside and help your mother?"
I knew right off that this was a ditch play. And I didn't think about it until later, but ditch wasn't a play I'd run with my dad before. Face it, pulling a ditch is not something discussed with dads. It's like, against parental law to tell your kid it's okay to ditch someone, no matter how annoying or muddy they might be.
But there he was, putting the play in motion, and man, he didn't have to wink twice. I smiled and said, "Sure thing!" then jumped off the liftgate and headed for my new front door.
I heard her coming after me but I couldn't believe it. Maybe it just sounded like she was chasing me; maybe she was really going the other way. But before I got up the nerve to look, she blasted right past me, grabbing my arm and yanking me along.
This was too much. I planted myself and was about to tell her to get lost when the weirdest thing happened. I was making this big windmill motion to break away from her, but somehow on the downswing my hand wound up tangling into hers. I couldn't believe it. There I was, holding the mud monkey's hand!
I tried to shake her off, but she just clamped on tight and yanked me along, saying, "C'mon!"
My mom came out of the house and immediately got the world's sappiest look on her face. "Well, hello," she says to Juli.
Hi!"
I'm still trying to pull free, but the girl's got me in a death grip. My mom's grinning, looking at our hands and my fiery red face. "And what's your name, honey?"
"Julianna Baker. I live right over there," she says, pointing with her unoccupied hand.
"Well, I see you've met my son," she says, still grinning away.
"Uh-huh!"
Finally I break free and do the only manly thing available when you're seven years old-I dive behind my mother.
Mom puts her arm around me and says, "Bryce, honey, why don't you show Julianna around the house?"
I flash her help and warning signals with every part of my body, but she's not receiving. Then she shakes me off and says, "Go on."
Juli would've tramped right in if my mother hadn't noticed her shoes and told her to take them off. And after those were off, my mom told her that her dirty socks had to go, too. Juli wasn't embarrassed. Not a bit. She just peeled them off and left them in a crusty heap on our porch.
I didn't exactly give her a tour. I locked myself in the bathroom instead. And after about ten minutes of yelling back at her that no, I wasn't coming out anytime soon, things got quiet out in the hall. Another ten minutes went by before I got the nerve to peek out the door.

Review by Mrs. Maureen D. Coelho
Read this hysterically funny story about two young kids
who meet by chance when Bryce and his uptight parents move into Juli's
neighborhood. It is the summer before their 2nd grade in school when the moving
truck backed into the driveway, and they began unloading their belongings. Juli
jumped up on the vehicle and right into Bryce's life. She locked eyes on Bryce's
blue eyes and almost kissed him. Each chapter of this hilarious story is a
delightful yet different version of the same situations told by Bryce then by
Juli. Their families are
quite different.
Bryce's father is judgmental and opinionated. His mother is quiet and dominated by her husband. They are obsessed with their appearance and what people think about them; they still did not show compassion or kindness toward each other or the grandfather. Bryce's family is distant and unemotional. Even after the grandfather moved in with them, Juli's father is a hard-worker who loves to paint. He has a brother with medical issues that he financially cares for and physically visits on the weekends. They are not concerned with the upkeep of the house that they rent. They do not surround themselves with fancy, name-brand clothes, or expensive household items.
Juli is a strong-willed, full of life, energetic girl who blossoms into a beautiful yet unique young woman by the end of the story. Bryce is a typical, naive boy who is not interested in girls or drama. When he first met Juli, he thought she was pushy, obnoxious, and forward. He watched her from a distance as she succeeded in many things, including winning the School Science Fair, raising chickens, hatching and selling chicken eggs, climbing trees, and landscaping her yard.
Juli received some much-needed help from Bryce's
grandfather. The two became close friends and shared personal information about
themselves as they worked. Bryce was jealous that Juli and his grandfather
became so close when the grandfather barely spoke to Bryce or his family. Juli
has a likable personality, and she supports her opinions with rational actions.
She even climbed the tall tree on their street and protested so the township
workers wouldn't cut it down. Bryce began to see the real Juli, and he slowly
started to like what he could see.
Opinions about each other change slowly throughout the story as Juli and Bryce get to know each other better. Bryce thought her family was crazy, needy, unkempt, and lazy. After Juli explained to Bryce's grandfather that they rent the house so they can afford to keep Juli's uncle close to them to visit him often.
Bryce begins to identify Juli's strengths as positive
character traits. He admires her father for loving his brother so much. He
respects her brothers for following their dreams of becoming musicians. Bryce
realizes that his father is sad and regrets giving up his ideas to work and
have a fancy house. As Bryce begins to fall for Juli, she starts to think Bryce
is lazy and doesn't stand up for his beliefs. She slowly loses interest in him
and no longer wants to have him be her 1st kiss.
I rate this story 4 stars out of
4 stars. This
the real story is easy to read and understand. It is entertaining to read the
same situation explained by two different people. The characters are likable
and humorous. The author leaves you to
imagine the courtship of the two main characters. You do not know what will happen next, but it is evident that Bryce connects with Juli's feelings. Topics of discussion include a first kiss,
romance, dating, neighbors, science experiments, self-worth, endangered trees,
hatching chicken eggs, and family support.
The target audience for this straightforward read story is aged ten and up. There is no profanity or explicit dialogue in the text. Everyone wants to fall in love and find true happiness. As you read Juli's conversation, you can imagine her first kiss with Bryce and how special it would be if it would happen. It makes you think about your first kiss and your first crush.
I enjoyed the adoration both characters had for each other. The book was much better than the movie. The setting for the film is the 1950's in America.
I did not pick up on clues in the book to think it took place in the 1950s.
We’ve watched the movie but I didn’t know there was a book so we are excited to see the relation between the two.
We’ve watched the movie but I didn’t know there was a book so we are excited to see the relation between the two.
Relatable. Nostalgic. Simply, iridescent.
Coming of age stories are great at giving you a sense of nostalgia. From the first time you developed a heart-racing crush to the moment you learned that life doesn't always operate as how you imagined it would. Love, let's be honest, is weird.
Juli has loved---*ahem*was infatuated with, Bryce Loski since the day he moved to the neighborhood. (I don't want to give much away, so forgive me for being brief.) She'd be ecstatic to see him to the point she'd run up and hug him. As they got older, she even *spoiler alert* sniffed his hair for his scent. Yes. Weird. But remember, she was very much into him.
Now Bryce, being a little boy, wasn't used to the idea of girls. Especially to the young, enthusiastic Juli Baker. The years go by, and while Juli's still very much head over heels for Bryce, the latter has taken it upon himself to stay clear of the lovesick girl.
Events happen where we see a "flip/switch" in Bryce's and Juli's attitudes.
This book isn't a simple story about falling in love as a kid. Oh, it's far from that. Not only is this story about understanding the feelings we have as we grow up, it's about seeing people for who they are and what that adds to or removes from the bigger picture.
In the words of grandfather Chet, some people are not always the "sum of their parts".
Speaking as a 20 year old, Flipped is a timeless classic. Beautiful from start to finish and will leave you wondering, "Are they the sum of their parts? Are they flat, satin, or gloss? Or are they iridescent?"
