Told from the perspective of an enslaved boy being raised in a Roman brothel, a stunning literary historical novel of identity, family, suffering, and freedom

In a brothel on the Spanish coast during the waning years of the Roman Empire, a young enslaved boy of unknown parentage is growing up. His world is a kitchen, then an herb-scented garden, followed by a loud and dangerous tavern, and finally, the mysterious upstairs where the “wolves” do their business.

The wolves, named after the muses and coming from across the vast empire, are Sparrow’s surrogate family. They are his mothers and his sisters, his guides in a rough life, his solace from it. When he is not being told stories by his beloved Euterpe, he runs errands for her lover, the cook, while trying to avoid the blows of their brutal overseer or the machinations of the chief wolf, Melpomene. But a hard fate awaits Sparrow, one that involves suffering, murder, mayhem, and the scattering of the little community that has been his whole world.

Through meticulous research and bold imagination, James Hynes brings the entirety of a Roman city to vivid life, recreating old Pagan Rome as its codes and morals give way before the new religion of Christianity, and introduces readers to one of the most powerfully affecting and memorable characters of recent fiction.
Sparrow is an enthralling, heartbreaking novel of identity, endurance, and love in a dangerous and changing time.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A vivid portrait of a literal empire of pain.”
Kirkus

Sparrow is a stunning work of historical imagination. The story of a young man making his name in the dying days of the Roman empire, Sparrow is masterful in its portrayal of love, sex and friendship."

The Observer

“Hynes renders this hidden world so powerfully and vividly.”―
The Times (UK)

“A secret history that teems with the brutality, sensuality, and frailty of life in a decaying empire.”―
Sydney Morning Herald

“Sparrow’s voice is original and moving and the grueling work of the brothel becomes absolutely real. The wolves and their shifting relationships—by turns tender, competitive and bullying—are beautifully portrayed.”―
The Guardian

“A bleak and brutal story, vividly told by Hynes, who has created a truly unforgettable character in the resilient Sparrow.”―
Daily Mail (UK)

“This book is powerfully told and deeply felt, but not for prudish readers.”

Sparrow is a book that was not on my radar until my friend Elyse recommended it to me. I immediately ordered a copy, and WOW! This is a book unlike any other I've read. The only book I can compare it to is another historical fiction, 'The Wolf and the Watchman'.

This novel takes place during the last years of the Roman empire in the city of Carthago Nova and is narrated by a slave boy. His life is detailed from the time he is quite young, to his adulthood. He has no idea where he's from and does not know who his parents were. He appears to have been dropped off at a tavern in Helicon which also serves as a house of prostitution.

The novel is a harrowing portrait of this boy's life. Throughout the book, he goes by multiple names and is frequently called Pusus, a name that means 'slave'. His friends are the prostitutes, or 'wolves', who live and work in the tavern. They are all named after muses and one especially is important to him. Her name is Euterpe and she takes him under her wing, attempting to prevent him from getting beaten or harmed. When times are tough or Pusus asks difficult questions she tells him tales that offer optimism, hope, and knowledge.

Euterpe's efforts to shield him from harm don't get very far as Pusus is soon assigned to work with the wolves in the upstairs tavern. His saving grace is his ability to dissociate, and his image of being a sparrow is where he goes when life is too difficult to bear. Euterpe told him a tale about the sparrow's ability to take quick flight and remove itself from danger and fear. Thus, when Pusus is frightened or hurt, he takes the form of a sparrow and hovers outside his physical body.

The novel pointedly explores the hypocrisy and cruelty of the Roman Catholic church during this timeframe. Despite their 'holier than thou' attitudes, they own the brothel and use the money earned through prostitution to build their coffers and support slavery.

The book is an intricate and historical portrait of a time and people, of the overwhelming discrepancies between wealth and poverty, and the story of a boy born into chattel. It is beautifully detailed and the author's research is astonishing. I loved this book and highly recommend it to readers of historical and literary fiction.

The story revolves around a brothel. The descriptive writing is not for the faint hearted.

A wonderfully written story of what it was like to be a slave and sex worker in a Roman Spanish port city. The characters are well defined and their daily (and nightly) tasks can draw sympathies and emotions you might not expect. You might say the "sparrow" as a character creates a literary vehicle that helps buffer this cruel world and explains the ending that some comments have complain about. Overall, a touching and gritty tale.

The above review expresses my views precisely. While a strong stomach may be helpful, the book is a fascinating, engrossing, and very well written tale of a brothel in Spain towards the end of the Roman Empire. However, the ending is a “huh?”

Got so wrapped up in the lives of the slaves who worked as prostitutes. Great characters, great research....I felt like I was living in the Roman Empire!

Wonderfully written, with an exceptional plot and unforgettable characters, Sparrow has got to be one of the best novels of 2023. The title character is beautifully self-aware and observant, and through his eyes we see the life of a Roman brothel at that civilization's end. The story is not for the easily offended, but it's one of those stories that leave you wanting more. A great read, highly recommended.

I bought this book based on a lot of great reviews on how well it was written and how it actually portaid the period - which was true but I found the ending to be totally unbelievable that I could not ever recommend this book to anyone. It felt like the author ran out of time and had to wrap on the book in a page or two without providing any explanation on how the ending was believable or possible. After spending hours getting to know the characters the ending left me empty and with a disappointment in the time I invested in reading this book.

Did you know slavery was bad? Or life as an involuntary prostitute? If not, this book will convince you. Dismal start, dismal story, dismal ending. This is supposed to be the start of a series, so maybe some triumph-over-adversity will come in volume six, but this is a fictitious world I want nothing more to do with.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enchanting story of a boy slave
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 7, 2024
Sparrow is the autobiography of a boy slave in the time when the Roman Empire was Christian but still allowed slavery. Sparrow is a young boy when he is taken to be a kitchen slave in a tavern. The cook Focaria looks after him and teaches him how to stand up for himself. But it is one of the "wolves" Euterpe, who tells him stories and tries to protect him. The wolves are slave girls who work as prostitutes. Eventually, as Sparrow grows , his beauty is recognised by the tavern's owners and they make him into a boy prostitute, a "catamite". How Sparrow copes with this, how he understands himself and his relationship with the other wolves is explored with sensitivity. Those who own the tavern are seen to be hypocrites, who make a great deal of money from prostitution but give it to their Uncle, who is a Christian Bishop. Sparrow has to navigate these different worlds and to survive. We are with him throughout this exciting story and he is a wonderful character. I commend this well-researched and eloquent novel which has given life to this remarkable Sparrow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, explicit and deeply engaging
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 19, 2023
This is clearly a well researched work that recounts the brutal and desperate lives of slaves working in a Roman brothel - the 'wolves' - towards the end of the Empire, and a young boy made to be a catamite. The reader is drawn into this close community where Helicon exists and the fate of those within - so much so that you can almost smell and taste the air and hear the sounds skilfully painted by the author. This would have been 5 stars albeit that the final chapter is disappointing and seems at odds with the painful reality of the rest of the story leaving a myriad of questions unanswered. Even if it is the writers intention to write further on the life of the Sparrow (hopefully), it seems rushed and weak compared to the rest of the narrative.

I seldom write reviews or read a book worthy of five stars.
You hear, feel, taste and picture every single thing that happens in the book.
Heartbreaking, harrowing, sad and sometimes funny, it's not for the faint hearted. I absolutely loved Sparrow, the book will stay with me for the long time.
Sparrow will capture your heart and up your imagination.
I want to know more, I need to know about Sparrows life. I never wanted the book to end. What an amazing writer.

A totally absorbing story about the lives of ancient Roman Brothel slaves. It touches upon the hypocrisy of early Christian Roman society, the daily uncertainty of life as a slave and the loss of any kind of autonomy any slave had over their own life. Needless to say the life of a Roman Brothel slave was both harrowing and sordid. Yet despite all this a good and very readable book has been written about love, loyalty and betrayal.
