Whereas previous studies of the end of British rule in India have concentrated on the negotiations of the transfer of power at the all-India level or have considered the emergence of separatist politics amongst India's Muslim minorities, this study provides a re-evaluation of the history of Bengal focusing on the political and social processes that led to the demand for partition in Bengal and tracing the rise of Hindu communalism. In its most startling revelation, the author shows how the demand for a separate homeland for the Hindus, which was fuelled by a large and powerful section of Hindu society within Bengal, was seen as the only way to regain influence and to wrest power from the Muslim majority. The picture which emerges is one of a stratified and fragmented society moving away from the mainstream of Indian nationalism, and increasingly preoccupied with narrower, more parochial concerns.

One of the few impartial books not influenced by the narration of West Bengal upper class caste. Simplistic explanations of this division is now assigned to the British and people get away with it. But the truth behind it is the obsession of dominance of Hindu Upper Castes to hold on to the levers of power and deprive the minorities consisting of largely Muslims and smaller number of lower caste Hindus. The writer did a superb job in exploring these complex factors and in elucidating the dynamics. Kudos!

Great book not influenced by the upper castes of West Bengal and Hindu nationalists. This book articulates the reality of Bengal partition and does so very well.

It was plesure reading this book. Though its not 'easy' to read as the reader has to clear his way through the endless academic jargon. But this book has won at least the hearts of the east-bengalees, the translation into bengali is a testimony to this fact. Yes this book finally talks about some of truth behind the oft-referred 'Banga Bhanga'. This work de-mythified the mystery about that division and the clique that worked behind it - whether for or against it. The 'armchair communal Bhadralok' had a leading role in this historical movement and the fact that these people were definitely communal is an immense truth that comes out of this book. A testimony to this fact is actually added as the lone appendix to the book - the speech by Sharat Chandra Chaterjee. A modern Bengali must find amusement and for sure amazement at the sheer communal calls by this respected and hugely successful early-twentieth century writer. Thank you Ms Chaterji.

1) Very Internisinting book where author tried prove hindu commnalism for division of bengal but exposing muslim communal policy for parition of bengal

2) People who ask what Hindu Mahasahaba, other hindu org done durning independce they should read and se how todays west bengal was saved by this org.

3) All Muslim politics start with bhai-chara end with Uma, krisi-paraja party of hug, when goverment formed the first decision was made to cut hindu seats in ministry

4) Famous bengal famine, was done with Help of SUAR-warady reason behind was reduce hindu population and also delcared direction action day as goverment holiday.

5) Never Trust Leftist and Communist, Seems Subash Chandra Bose and Sarat Bose(his brother) were Muslim appeaser, No doubt todays bengal politics follwing there foot step.

6) Sarat Bose even tried for free, bengal (combining east and west bengal) with muslim majority, seems we need dig past of person like subash candra bose life also.

7) When ever you see Congress, communist and Muslim org oppsing hindu trader, there reason behind it, becuase this trader always supported natinailostic politics in past it was Congress, and Jang sang , BJP, HM, etc

8) Author tries every hard prove hindu communalism but end up proving communist/lefttist and Muslim communalism.

I surprised that author praises muslim league may be the author herself is muslim. If muslim league such a good job to not divide it, why did bengali people asked for freedom in 1971??? why they did not want to be part of pakistan which was created by muslim league???? So the arguments made are such a low level. I don't buy the lies mention in this book.

Till 1945, both Congress and Hindu Mahasabha were demanding (undivided) Bengal not to be partitioned. Muslim League was asking for partition of Bengal. Suddenly, in 1947, the roles were reversed! Why is so? Because of Great Calcutta Killing, instigated by Muslim league. 1000s upon 1000s people were killed by Goons of Muslim league.

The writer is a Known Communist, and still believes in fantasy. She should answer, why Communist leaders like Jyoti basu had to work in West Bengal, and not in Bangladesh.

If you are into marxism etc you will love it. Otherwise its more of a imaginary fairytail rather than a History book. For any serious student of Bengal history this will be a waist.

3.0 out of 5 stars It gives the British view about the partition of India
Reviewed in Japan on May 12, 2022
It is a British view to put the blame on the Hindus to partition Bengal but it ignored the mass killings of the Hindus in Calcutta in august 1946. As Suhrawarddy Who was the organizer of the massacre in Calcutta Hindus could not believe that the same killer has changed his attitude and can be the savior of the Hindus
