Listen: How Evelyn Glennie, a Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion Hardcover – Picture Book, April 12, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
A gorgeous and empowering picture book biography about Evelyn Glennie, a deaf woman, who became the first full-time solo percussionist in the world. (Cover may vary)
"No. You can't," people said.
But Evelyn knew she could. She had found her own way to listen.
From the moment Evelyn Glennie heard her first note, music held her heart. She played the piano by ear at age eight, and the clarinet by age ten. But soon, the nerves in her ears began to deteriorate, and Evelyn was told that, as a deaf girl, she could never be a musician. What sounds Evelyn couldn’thear with her ears, though, she could feel resonate through her body as if she, herself, were a drum. And the music she created was extraordinary. Evelyn Glennie had learned how to listen in a new way. And soon, the world was listening too.

By Shannon Stocker
Evelyn Glennie, after losing her hearing at a young age, must redefine what it takes to be a musician.
Evelyn carves her way, hurdling every obstacle that is put in front of her - and there are many! including a belief that a ‘deaf musician could not have a career in music’. She teaches, showing the teachers that listening includes way more than just ears. Belief in herself, hard work and following her heart while meeting challenges head-on made her the successful percussionist she is today.
For any young reader, this book shows what grit, determination and ‘listening’ to yourself can do.
Beautifully done:)
And highly recommend you also take a look.
It tells the story of Evelyn Glennie childhood and life
Her love of music and how going deaf caused her strife.
It is a story of never giving up on your dream
No matter how negative others may seem.
It shows how fortitude and resilience can help you achieve too
Even when life throws obstacles in front of you.
Becoming deaf, others assumed she'd play music no more
But Evelyn Glennie was determined to even the score.
She didn't give up but found new ways
To listen and engage as music she plays.
Such an inspirational story about never giving in,
No matter what the obstacles, look for a way to win
This book shares highlights from her life and dreams
Showing you not to give up, as difficult as it seems.
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review
It is widely recomendable, to all - to younger readers and older ones, to people of all ages and abilities. It is a great book to have and read with your little ones.
The first time I read it it brought a lump to my throat and tears (both of which I had to swallow back in order to continue reading). And this was not in a sad way. It was in a way that a simple tune with astounding lyrics touches you. This book is bound to move you as it talks to you directly and involves you in the text.
A great intention and a message from the author, a great way to involve your reader. Well done.
