A gorgeous and empowering picture book biography about Evelyn Glennie, a deaf woman, who became the first full-time solo percussionist in the world. (Cover may vary)

"No. You can't," people said.
But Evelyn knew she could. She had found her own way to listen.

From the moment Evelyn Glennie heard her first note, music held her heart. She played the piano by ear at age eight, and the clarinet by age ten. But soon, the nerves in her ears began to deteriorate, and Evelyn was told that, as a deaf girl, she could never be a musician. What sounds Evelyn couldn’thear with her ears, though, she could
feel resonate through her body as if she, herself, were a drum. And the music she created was extraordinary. Evelyn Glennie had learned how to listen in a new way. And soon, the world was listening too.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—The life of deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie dances and swirls across the page in this vibrantly illustrated picture book biography that is perfect for elementary school readers learning about music and fascinating women. Glennie's story begins in Scotland, where she can play music by ear by the age of 10. Soon thereafter, she loses her hearing, and it seems as if she will lose access to music, too. A compassionate teacher, Ron Forbes, understands that Glennie feels the music with every part of her being, and she becomes an essential musician in any percussion section. This is more than a story of overcoming discrimination due to disability—Stocker captures something about the artist's need to be herself, regardless of abilities. Glennie is making music to this day. Lush brushstrokes, delicate character portraits, and warm colors make this a beautiful title to explore, and the ample text and sweet author's note ensures that Glennie's story will have an impact on readers. VERDICT An excellent addition to biography sections, especially for musical readers looking to feel the music and not just hear it.—Aryssa Damron

LISTEN: HOW EVELYN GLENNIE, A DEAF GIRL, CHANGED PERCUSSION by Shannon Stocker is a beautiful book and a true story. The story of how Evelyn Glennie, a deaf girl, changed percussion is a truly inspiring one, filled with curiosity, determination, faith, and dreams come true. If you're looking for an uplifting and motivating read, then Shannon Stocker's book is definitely worth checking out.

WOW! This book is just beautiful in so many ways. Author Shannon Stocker tells the story of Evelyn Glennie, a young girl who loses her hearing and with it, potentially her ability to keep playing the music that's an integral part of her life. But deafness does not defeat Evelyn, and with the encouragement of a kind teacher, she learns how to feel rhythms through her body. Evelyn's talent and persistence enable her to become the first deaf student at the prestigious Royal Academy Of Music in London, shattering many glass ceilings for musicians who were previously excluded from elite institutions. Evelyn became the first full-time solo percussionist in the world, redefining the genre. Evelyn's accomplishments have won her many awards, and a (well-deserved) Damehood from the Queen!
Shannon's writing is lyrical and a delight to read, perfectly paired with Devon Holzwarth's vibrant illustrations. LISTEN is a must-have addition for every child's bookshelf and school library collection.

Just received and read this book. It is so beautifully done. What an amazing woman Evelyn Glennie is and Shannon has done such a great job of helping me enter her world. Plus the illustrations are spectacular.
If you are a parent interested in sharing a great perspective on overcoming disability, a music teacher looking for the perfect book to add to your classroom,or an English teacher looking for a book that exemplifies onomatopoeia and lyrical language then this is the book for you.

This is a picture book biography about a deaf girl who wanted to pursue a career in music. As a child, she was told no, but with the support of her parents, she pushed through to excel in primary school, then music school, then in the world. Many picture book biographies have a perseverance theme, and this one does too, but additionally, it highlights other inspiring themes. It shows that a disability doesn't have to hold one back, and can add more, and it shows the importance of listening to yourself and to others.

I read this story to my kids last night. The younger ones were captivated by the art. The older ones were fascinated by the story. It inspired a lot of great questions about deafness, disability, compassion, and empathy. Highly recommend.

LISTEN - How Evelyn Glennie, A Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion
By Shannon Stocker

Evelyn Glennie, after losing her hearing at a young age, must redefine what it takes to be a musician.
Evelyn carves her way, hurdling every obstacle that is put in front of her - and there are many! including a belief that a ‘deaf musician could not have a career in music’. She teaches, showing the teachers that listening includes way more than just ears. Belief in herself, hard work and following her heart while meeting challenges head-on made her the successful percussionist she is today.
For any young reader, this book shows what grit, determination and ‘listening’ to yourself can do.
Beautifully done:)

I absolutely adore this inspirational book
And highly recommend you also take a look.
It tells the story of Evelyn Glennie childhood and life
Her love of music and how going deaf caused her strife.

It is a story of never giving up on your dream
No matter how negative others may seem.
It shows how fortitude and resilience can help you achieve too
Even when life throws obstacles in front of you.

Becoming deaf, others assumed she'd play music no more
But Evelyn Glennie was determined to even the score.
She didn't give up but found new ways
To listen and engage as music she plays.

Such an inspirational story about never giving in,
No matter what the obstacles, look for a way to win
This book shares highlights from her life and dreams
Showing you not to give up, as difficult as it seems.

We love everything about this book - from the lovely simple pictures and inspirational text, to an even more inspirational bit that awaits you at the very end of this lovely little book (and this I will not disclose so that you can enjoy this little surprise just as much as we did).
It is widely recomendable, to all - to younger readers and older ones, to people of all ages and abilities. It is a great book to have and read with your little ones.
The first time I read it it brought a lump to my throat and tears (both of which I had to swallow back in order to continue reading). And this was not in a sad way. It was in a way that a simple tune with astounding lyrics touches you. This book is bound to move you as it talks to you directly and involves you in the text.
A great intention and a message from the author, a great way to involve your reader. Well done.
