Open this unique picture book and meet John Cage, the pioneering, inspiring composer who believed all sound—from the crash of a slamming door to the whirr of a blender to the whoosh of the wind—was music.

For John Cage, music was
everywhere: in the hum of the refrigerator, the screech of a garbage truck, the patter of the rain. But other people disagreed. They felt that, surely, a pianist on stage must actually play their piano to create music...not just sit there. And in no way was it melodic to turn a musician's mic on and off as they do play their instruments--it was just chaos!

John Cage found sound in silence, and knew that all noises were unique. All you had to do was
listen to hear it.

Told in second person and paired with exciting illustrations as innovative as Cage's music, here is a picture book--perfect for any budding musician--that celebrates the genius of a nonconforming musician who always stayed true to his artistic vision.

An appealing picture book about listening to the world around you, quiet or noisy, and thinking of it as music just like innovative composer John Cage. Stunning neon illustrations will have kids reaching for this one again and again.

What a cool story! I had never heard of John Cage, but I love the way the story is written and encourages children to listen to everyday sounds and find musical qualities in them. Brilliant!

This is a fun book encouraging kids to hear the music of the noise around them. To live in the moment and be true to themselves even through adversity. It was also really interesting to listen to his music after reading the story.

One of the most creative and inspiring picture book biographies I’ve seen…and such a fitting way to honor an innovative legend like John Cage, who believed that ALL sound was music. Using a series of “What if” questions, readers begin to see the way John Cage saw the world. And to understand that there is no one way to see or hear or do anything! I think this book holds great power even for those unfamiliar with the composer. The illustrations are out of this world, too!!

BEAUTIFUL NOISE is one of the most beautiful and uniquely told picture book biographies I’ve read to date. Told in second person and paired with exquisite illustrations, it celebrates musician John Cage and his nonconforming ways of thinking. Getting to experience the world through John Cage’s eyes was a truly unique reading experience and one that has stayed with me long after reading this book. Highly recommend!

Beautiful Noise provides an engaging look a lesser-known composer and performer. Deceptively simple text paired with bursting images, this book sheds light on a fascinating historical figure and will draw in readers of all ages.

I remember learning about John Cage in an art history course about performance art, however I actually finished the course feeling confused and uninspired. This picture book changed my perception of John Cage! Beautiful Noise not only tells the story of John Cage but reveals a creative process full of joy and experimentation. Cage created music inspired by the sounds of daily life, using both musical instruments and everyday objects. The text is written as a series of questions posed to the reader, making abstract concepts very relatable to children. The illustrations are wonderful, and also do a great job of combining everyday objects/life with abstract concepts. I highly recommend this book!

Loved the story and the colorful illustrations that represent the music visually. I had the opportunity to hear the author speak at my local indie and she was fabulous.

This is the most inspiring message of this erumpent, triumphant picture book about the music of John Cage. Not only will children and their parents feel tugged to explore the music of this bold composer, but they will also learn to listen more closely to the music in every day sound all around them -- and to create new music of their own. LIsa Rogers' final message -- that to have a rich, creative life, like John Cage, "the only thing you have to do is listen," -- can be life changing for readers of all ages.
