Hugo Marston’s friend Paul Rogers dies unexpectedly in a locked room at the American Library in Paris. The police conclude that Rogers died of natural causes, but Hugo is certain mischief is afoot. As he pokes around the library, Hugo discovers that rumors are swirling around some recently donated letters from American actress Isabelle Severin. The reason: they may indicate that the actress had aided the Resistance in frequent trips to France toward the end of World War II. Even more dramatic is the legend that the Severin collection also contains a dagger, one she used to kill an SS officer in 1944. Hugo delves deeper into the stacks at the American library and finally realizes that the history of this case isn’t what anyone suspected. But to prove he’s right, Hugo must return to the scene of a decades-old crime.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Mark Pryor’s Hugo Marston series is one of the most engaging mystery series going, and the latest installment does not disappoint. Atmospheric and intricate, and suffused with the romance of modern Paris. A great read.”

—WILLIAM LANDAY, bestselling author of Defending Jacob

The sixth Hugo Marston novel has it all: a Paris setting, a locked-room death that may or may not be murder, a beautiful actress who was a spy for the French resistance during the Second World War and a dead Nazi…Marston follows the clues in a finely structured plot that’s one of Pryor’s best books yet.”

Toronto Globe & Mail

“To read the book is to
smell and taste the food, feel the air of [Paris], and hear the language… Spending a couple of hours in the company of Hugo Marston is always enjoyable, and reading The Paris Librarian was no exception.”

Reviewing The Evidence

“Well-written and compelling, with twists at every turn to keep the reader guessing…
Now I have to go back to the beginning and start the series with The Bookseller!”

The Book Basics

“It has something for everyone—booze, guns, action, beautiful women, history, humor, danger, fantastic French food, and BOOKS!
Pryor’s series is one of my favorites.”

BookPeople/MysteryPeople

The Paris Librarian is the latest entry in one of my favorite series in crime fiction. Mark Pryor keeps getting better and better—the great sense of place, a bibliophile mystery, and a well-crafted novel of suspense all add up to a fantastic read.”

—LINDA FAIRSTEIN, author of
Killer Look, an Alexandra Cooper novel

My favorite bibliophile returns in this stylish and entertaining read. Hugo Marston has a nose for first editions, and trouble. In this deftly plotted mystery, the Paris cafés are beguiling, the clues are subtle and ingenious, and the denouement is both thrilling and unexpected. The author is in impeccable form.”

—CAROL K. CARR, author of the Madam of Espionage Mysteries

“Mark Pryor is at the top of his game with
The Paris Librarian, the latest installment of the Hugo Marston series. While the characters remain warm and familiar, the suspense will keep you guessing well into the wee hours of the morning. It’s always a treat to step back into Hugo’s world. Pryor has cemented himself as a mystery writer not to be missed.”

—JENNIFER HILLIER, author of
Creep and Wonderland

A book lover’s mystery and a mystery lover’s book. Is it possible to make Paris a more intriguing city? Pryor has done it, yet again. Rare books, not-so-rare death, and a café au lait. So real you can smell the baguettes. Pryor’s books are like an elegant café you can’t wait to visit again . . . with friends. I’d follow Hugo Marston down any rue sombre.”

—STEVEN SIDOR, author of
Pitch Dark

Mark Pryor is the author of the eight (soon to be nine!) Hugo Marston mystery novels, six of which are set in Paris, France, but also feature London and Barcelona. The books have been translated into eight languages and the film and television rights were recently optioned to Like Entertainment, with a view to putting Hugo on the screen!

Mark also authored two psychological thrillers set in Austin, Texas, where he lives. HOLLOW MAN and its sequel, DOMINIC, received high praise from reviewers:

"[Hollow Man's] Dominic is not your grandmother’s psychopath. . . . This noirish twisty tale will appeal to those who enjoy Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter series, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, and Pryor’s own Sherlockian international thriller series starring Hugo Marston."

—BOOKLIST, STARRED REVIEW

“Devilishly clever… As the mishaps escalate for the conspirators, so does the suspense, culminating in a denouement worthy of the neo-noir film classic The Usual Suspects.”

—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, STARRED REVIEW

“Pryor’s exquisite stand-alone is a gem. . . .”

―RT BOOK REVIEWS, 4 ½ stars (Fantastic—Keeper)

“Pryor’s skillful narrative crystallizes in the best possible way, in the novel’s last sentence. Pryor… can write realistically about the mind of a psychopath. Maybe that is useful for an assistant district attorney. It certainly is for a murder mystery writer.”

―San Antonio Express-News

“Dominic goes into action, pulling several diabolical tricks that solve the murders, simultaneously confirming Dominic’s own status as a psychopath in a clever book that has a significant number of puzzles and an equal list of tantalizing answers.”

―Toronto Star

A former newspaper reporter from England, and now an assistant district attorney with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, in Austin, Texas, he is the creator of the nationally-recognized true-crime blog D.A. Confidential. He has appeared on CBS News's 48 Hours and Discovery Channel's Discovery ID: Cold Blood.

THE BOOKSELLER was his first Hugo Marston novel and upon release was Library Journal's Debut of the Month with a starred review. RT Book Reviews called it "a fantastic debut!" and gave it 4 and 1/2 stars, and Oprah.com listed it as an "unputdownable mystery."

His second in the series, THE CRYPT THIEF, was released in May of 2013 and reviewers said:

"[G]ood character development, increasing levels of action and suspense, a complex and deranged antagonist, and—once again—appealing Paris settings. The Hugo Marston series now belongs on every espionage fan’s watch list."

—Booklist

“Haunting imagery in Père La Chaise cemetery sets the stage for Pryor’s chilling sophomore entry, and the City of Light becomes a backdrop for Marston’s adventures. The clever antagonist leads him on a merry chase that will keep the reader entertained throughout."

—RT Book Reviews

"Two young lovers make the fatal mistake of sneaking into Paris’s Père Lachaise Cemetery the same night as a bone-stealing psychopath in Pryor’s propulsive second novel starring affable former FBI profiler Hugo Marston…. The engaging characters sweep readers into a suspenseful chase from Pigalle to the Pyrenées."

—Publishers Weekly

The third Hugo Marston novel, THE BLOOD PROMISE, was released in January 2014. It may be his best yet...

“Mark Pryor is one of the smartest new writers on the block. His new novel is a doozy.”

—Philip Kerr, author of A Man Without Breath, a Bernie Gunther novel

"Pryor seems to have hit his stride in this series, as he adroitly juxtaposes the light banter between Marston and Green with some scenes of intense emotion.... And, all the while, the suspense ramps up. Top-notch mystery in a skillfully delineated Parisian setting."

—Booklist

Mark is also the author of the true crime book, AS SHE LAY SLEEPING, which is the account of a "cold" murder case he prosecuted. Published in January 2013, Publisher's Weekly gave it a starred review and called it "compelling" and "riveting."

Good entry in the series. I have read all of the Hugo Marston books and while this one is not the best I think it is up to par with many of the others. The writing style is good it is the mystery in this one that I had a problem with. In the very beginning of the book you are basically told who did it, whereas in the others there was a real build to find out who did it. Granted there is a twist toward the end that tells you the "why", but it just didn't hold me as well once was pretty sure I knew who had done it. The others in the series are much more page turners, where this one is more an easy walk through the pages. I like the characters in the series and his writing style, so I would recommend these books, I just hope the next one is another page turner like the earlier ones.

I couldn’t put it down so that’s why I gave it a five - however it is obviously a part of a series and the author didn’t give enough background to make it entirely a stand alone - just hints which indicated other stuff had happened- I did order the first book in the series from my library and if it’s good I may buy more of the series

Not one of the best books, but a fast read. I love almost anything written about France

I look forward to each new edition to the Hugo Marston series. Embodying much of the mental acuity of Sherlock Holmes with great social skills and character, I forget he is a book character. For some reason as I read I picture the British actor Michael Kitchen (Foyle's War). His good friend Tom alternates between being an enigma and an annoyance. Love the transgender French detective.. the series abounds with interesting and well developed characters and unusual plots. Can't wait for the next installment

Just read this book while visiting Paris. Loved it. I really like all the Hugh Marston series. Interesting plots, great humour and dialogue.

One of the most maddening things about recent Hugo Marston novels is that a blazingly obvious clue is somehow overlooked by Hugo, the cops and everyone else until near the end when, aha!, it somehow resurfaces. In this case, author Pryor tells us after the librarian's murder about a book left leaning against the wall outside his basement office...which has obvious significance, yet everyone loses their marbles and no one sees how it figures into the otherwise puzzling crime. Pryor does this same thing again in the Sorbonne Affair, when we are left practically yelling at the page about the obvious source of "mystery" DNA found at a crime scene. I would say that none of the surprise endings of these books is anything other than a relief that the blatant clues have been rediscovered.

This was the first Hugo Marston book I read - and I loved it. There's lots of Paris as the backstage along with interesting characters. When I went to Paris I was delighted to find the bouquinistes featured in this book and reimagine the mystery unfolding. Well written prose, yet easy to read and embrace. And you always learn something from each book in the series - in this case, insight into the collectible books and the traditions of the bouquinistes along the edge of the Seine.

3.0 out of 5 stars A laboured story in Paris
Reviewed in Australia on September 11, 2016
Similar to some other reviewers, I found this story hard going. Laboured. Ok there was a story line in the book, but honestly it was buried, hard to decipher and then it came out at the end without coming together. Clearly only Hugo, nobody else and not the reader could see where it was all heading, the clues were too well hidden. At times the book felt like a travel brochure for Paris, but didn't weave into the story in a meaningful way.

1 star for Hugo, 1 star for Paris and a final star for the ever delightful Claudia.
