Editorial Reviews
Review
"Mystery mixed with romance makes for an intense and satisfying read. Silver Lake has both elements perfectly balanced throughout. One never detracts from, but actually embellishes the other. Great characterization made me care about this vulnerable protagonist. And, of course, Jason Lansing makes a wonderful hero, both sharp-edged and gentle, he's a man neither Rain or I could resist." -Between the Pages Spotlight Review(four stars)
"Silver Lake is part mystery, romance, and even a visit from the paranormal, all around a great, satisfying read. There's times when I'm startled in the book, firstly, by the ghostly visitor that keeps hanging around...yes, I read this at night, which meant I got a little jumpy. I was pretty surprised at the ending and it totally caught me off guard...this is a well-written story with believable characters, and the mystery is strong. I enjoyed the romance blossoming between Rain and Jason...Looking forward to more from Ms. Knight." - Storm Goddess Book Reviews (four stars)

Having read Kathryn Knight’s novel Gull Harbor, I was excited when Silver Lake was re-released on Amazon e-Book. She didn’t disappoint! Silver Lake was as enthralling as Gull Harbor…romance, mystery, and of course, ghosts, this novel was a page-turner from the very beginning!
Five years after her best friend Brandy goes missing, a newly divorced Rain Anderson has been given a chance to discover the past – by Brandy’s mother. The woman is dying of cancer, and she wants closure before she leaves this earth: what happened to her daughter?
Having been given a cabin at Silver Lake for the summer, Rain contacts their intimate group of friends that knew Brandy best. Lately, Brandy had been tormenting all of them in their dreams, and Rain thinks if they all come together, they can help put their friend at peace. However, Rain’s nervous about this high school reunion. Five years ago, she left Jason, her best friend, with a broken heart. She’s hoping after all these years that Jason has forgiven her.
For the past three years, Jason Lansing has thought of nothing but his work. Straight out of college, he started his own Karate institute, and it has become his whole life. His live-in girlfriend, Cara, is hardly a presence in his life anymore; and he’s haunted by dreams of their friend. When his high school crush gets in touch to spend a few weeks of the summer out at their teenage hangout, Silver Lake, Jason decides that perhaps he needs to do this…to finally put the past behind him, including Rain. He didn’t anticipate that he’d fall for Rain yet again.
Rain has the house for the whole summer, and she arrives first – as does Brandy’s ghost. When Jason, A.J., and Allie all show up, the house is riddled with weird happenings – puddles of water on the floor, broken windows, a near-drowning experience – the friends all agree that they have to discover what really happened to Brandy all those years ago, for their own sanity.
Silver Lake was a good read. I sort of figured it out in the first half of the book, but the excitement and mystery that led to the end result was well worth the time. Jason and Rain’s reuniting romance and their spicy chemistry was definitely worth the read, and I really liked their story. Silver Lake seems like a magical place, and Kathryn Knight has a knack for eerie description. She sets the scene beautifully, and you feel like you’re there with the characters as Brandy wreaks havoc on the house.
I think this Ms. Knight’s first novel, and I did like her second book, Gull Harbor, better. However, I love her writing style, and Silver Lake was definitely worth the time and money to read.
The premise of the book is pretty straight forward, High School friends get together after a five year hiatus to try and solve the mysterious disappearance of their friend. The characters are developed at a leisurely pace which is nice. You get a chance to learn about each of them as the story progresses. This keeps the mystery going throughout the pages. In the end, I felt that I knew each one of them as well as they knew each other.
As far as the mystery is concerned, the clues are subtle. There are several times that you are thrown off the track and you start to questions certain clues and whether they pertain to the story or not. I really enjoyed the pace of the storytelling. It had a very nice flow and wrapped up very nicely.
As far as the "Paranormal" side of the story, you do not have to take much of a leap of faith to believe. I think this is because the main character, Rain, is in somewhat a state of disbelief as well. The descriptions of what she is hearing and seeing (or what she believes she may be hearing and seeing) are done quite well. While personally I have not made up my mind about the paranormal, the author made me believe in what was being described.
This story could have ended in several different ways; however I liked the direction and conclusion it took. The book was an enjoyable read and as I wrote earlier, I am really looking forward to the next one. If Ms. Knight were an experienced author, with 7 or 8 novels under her belt, I would rate this 9/10. Since this is her first published work, I have to give her a 12! Thanks you for a very enjoyable read.
