Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—When Lia Setiawan, "the next Usain Bolt," comes to the prestigious Draycott Academy on a track scholarship, she finally sees the path forward to college and the future of her dreams. Lia anticipated a struggle fitting in with her wealthy boarding school classmates. She did not, however, predict the bullying she'd endure on the school's gossip app, the rampant drug and alcohol use, the cheating ring run by a teacher, or the murder. Lia's conversational narration adeptly balances the drama and suspense of the plot with tension-abating humor and irreverence. Racism to and within the Asian community is explored through Lia's family and her interactions with her peers. Her deceased father's Chinese-Indonesian family scorns her native Indonesian mother, and her track rival Mandy Kim regularly derides Southeast Asians. Entitlement, privilege, and morality in the face of injustice are other prominent themes. Anytime Lia tries to do the right thing, she is dismissed in order to protect the reputation of the wealthy. Much of Lia's ethical perseverating can be reduced to the question: Is it really cheating when the test is already rigged? These moral complexities add some meat to this otherwise fun and soapy thriller. The ending is predictable, and some references (Betsy DeVos, 2005 movie The-40-Year-Old Virgin) feel slightly inauthentic coming from high school sophomores. VERDICT Equal parts drama, humor, and angst, this boarding school thriller also delves into themes of racism and justice, and is recommended for general purchase, and for fans of Karen M. McManus's One of Us Is Lying, Holly Jackson's Good Girl, Bad Blood, and the streaming series Gossip Girl.—Elizabeth Lovsin

This was grab you by the hair thrilling from beginning to end.
I have such a problem with ya thrillers because there is always one person who things keep happening to and the injustice of it physically makes me so mad! I for sure felt that with this book, but it was just too good to put down!Lia is accepted into an elite prep school on a track scholarship and finds that life is not going to be a easy for her at Draycott… There is an in-crowd and the head of the food chain have already decided she isn’t in it… That doesn’t stop the school’s golden boy, Danny from being kind to her though. It doesn’t take long to learn that there is a whole lot of something going on here. There is an anonymous app that dishes gossip and heinous rumors about students, there is a big secret drug problem and Lia finds herself directly in the middle of all of it. When not one, but two people wind up dead, fingers immediately point to the new girl and it’s a race against the clock to save her own butt.I loved how Lia and her constant state of unease is represented in this book. If you constantly had trouble lurking, you would be physically and mentally affected. There was such a realistic depiction of this in The New Girl. This was my first read from this author and I am totally hooked!

Took a VERY long time to pick up (somehow despite the breakneck pacing) but when it did it held my attention because of its (occasionally) fun prose and (somewhat clumsy) exploration of deeper topics
The book was not what I expected from the description but
Many MANY M A N Y things were totally heavy-handed and cliche. I predicted half the book, but that’s the fun thing about these; you can read them un-seriously and laugh at all the bad, annoying, cliche parts while still appreciating the rare nice moment.
The ending was underwhelming, not in a bad way just more of a meh way.
The characters are unrealistic and shallow (but that’s the fun of these books) but I still found myself liking them.
Basically: good premise but heavy-handed and bad execution, pacing so fast it gives me whiplash, characters you are expected to care about but don’t, and a constantly stressed out protagonist on the brink of a brain aneurysm (someone give this girl a break!) bad book, but fun(ish) time if you don’t take it seriously. Read at your own risk.

READ THIS BOOK! I highly recommend. I usually don't finish books faster than a month 😅 honestly just because I hate reading, but this book let me tell you, I literally finished in a full 24 hours I'm not even exaggerating I loved it!!! Best book ever could not put it down, there was some slower points where it felt like the writer was rambling but she kept me on the edge of my seat 😉 the ending is so crazy I was not expecting it!!!

It feels like I only opened this book about 4 or 5 times before I finished it. I couldn’t put it down. I am excited this author has multiple books that have been published because I need to read more from her!

This author offered no character development, very weak plot lines and very obviously did no research on any subject she covers in the book. Pretty disappointing.

There are a lot of pages to this book which could have been half the size.
Totally obvious villain and some ridiculous plot lines. Sat rolling my eyes through most of it! Avoid!
