Purchase options and add-ons

The Indian history of the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, and particularly of the Ohio Valley, is so complex that it can be properly clarified only with the visual aid of maps. The Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History, in a sequence of thirty-three newly researched maps printed in as many as five colors, graphically displays the movement of Indian communities from 1640 to about 1871, when treaty making between Indian tribes and the United States government came to an end.

History was shaped in this part of North America by intertribal warfare, refugee movements, epidemics of European-introduced diseases, French and English wars and trade rivalry, white population advances, Indian resistance, Indian treaties deeding land to state and national governments, and imperfect arrangements for reservations, removal, and allotment of land. The changing pattern of Indian village locations as a result of all these factors is shown on the maps. Each map is highlighted by accompanying text, written as if the author were pointing out specific places on the map. Eighty-one illustrations convey a realistic impression of the land and its people.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Helen Hornbeck Tanner (1916-2011) was a distinguished scholar of American Indian history and literature, publishing books on the Caddo and the Ojibwa as well as on early eighteenth-century Spanish Florida. Her crowning scholarly achievement in print was the Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History published by the University of Oklahoma Press.

Helen’s commitment to the development of scholarship by American Indians is symbolized by the Susan Kelly Power and Helen Hornbeck Tanner Fund, co-named for her, which supports work at The Newberry Library by Ph.D. candidates and post-doctoral scholars of American Indian heritage.

Helen graduated with distinction from Swarthmore College in 1937 and went on to complete a Master’s degree at the University of Florida (1948) and a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan (1961). She taught at Michigan for several years but she was always proudest of her academic affiliation with the Newberry Library.

Very enlightening atlas to anyone interested in the Midwestern Indians.
Where they lived and moved to is often hard to tell when you are reading a book. Great help. Cleared up a lot of things for me. *****

I have used this book for reports and such for the past 25 years. It is indispensable for the serious scholar or researcher who needs the information it contains.

I found Helen Tanner's "Atlas" in the small town library of Beulah, Michigan where she lived and was awestruck by its detail and scholarship. The book contains many maps siting the movements of native peoples through the years, along with the epidemics, wars and other perils they faced through the centuries. This is a treasure for anyone interested in the Indians of the Great Lakes and I've used it as an invaluable reference material for my own novel of the Ojibwa, "Windigo Moon."

A welcome edition to my personal library! The only drawback with the book is that the color-coded key for native tribes is difficult to distinguish on many of the maps. The use of a magnifying glass to determine the colors is somewhat of a help. A classic book with excellent research by the author, Helen Hornbeck Tanner.

This book I feel is essential for anyone doing genealogy who has Indian relatives. The format lead me to a real in depth of understanding of the history of this time in North America.
