Jazz: A People's Music is a comprehensive book written by Sidney Finkelstein that delves into the history, culture, and significance of jazz music. The book explores the origins of jazz in African American communities in New Orleans and traces its evolution through the 20th century. Finkelstein examines the key figures in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker, and explores the social and political contexts in which they created their music. The book also explores the influence of jazz on other genres of music, such as rock and roll and hip-hop. Jazz: A People's Music is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of jazz and its impact on American culture. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. I own a paperback of Sidney Finkelstein's book "How Music Expresses Ideas", published by International Publishers in New York in 1952. It is brilliant. And I was lucky to hear Finkelstein give a lecture at one of the Marxist institutes in the 1950s. He looked like a worker and was very warm and friendly to his students.

The author shows that Jazz was the latest in musical styles derived from folk music and other styles popular among the common people rather then the upper classes. The main difference being that Jazz was created after the invention of recorded music so that it was not forgotten and able to be studied by scholars.

He shows how Jazz owes other musical styles, not only African music but European folk traditions. Jazz was altered and gained national popularity from its move, along with millions of African Americans from the South and its New Orleans origins to the North and Chicago, where the Chicago Style was created. Although the creators of Jazz were African Americans, people of many different national groups were involved in the composition and playing of Jazz.

I didn't understand all the musical terminology that the author used such as smooth and sweet Jazz but I found the description of the cultural and political impact of Jazz to be fascinating.
