The late Marjorie Chibnall is one of the most amazing medievalists of her -- or any -- generation. Her scholarship is peerless and her writing is always clear and careful. Editing and translating Orderic Vitalis for Oxford Medieval Texts was her magnum opus. This book emerged from that work. It is a real gem. To get a sense of what a great historian she was, read this and her biography of Empress Matilda.

This book is written for scholars working with Orderic Vitalis' texts. Chibnall's focus thus is fairly narrow, choosing to explore topics that provide context for understanding Orderic's 'Historia Ecclesiastica,' rather than a broader historical view. It is an essential work for any historiographical look at Orderic and his contemporary historians, but it is not recommended for a general audience.

Lots of brief examples of the lives of Norman monks like Orderic and Norman knights, but I was hoping for more on how monks interacted with the secular world as clerks and chaplains. For someone keenly interested in Orderic's life or in depth information on monasticism, this is a good introduction.

Its description of life in Shropshire after the Norman Conquest of Britain, followed by the detailed description of monastic life in Normandy, straddle the changes that were taking place place in aristocratic life, in the church and in the direction of thinking in a European context. It shows the increasing influence that the Church brought to bear on the use of arms as a means of 'converting'
the Heathens to Christianity.
Marjorie Chibnall's Study captures the atmosphere in a way that makes it both a pleasure to read and offers an ease of reference that is lacking in many studies of this period.
