The Potentate of Atlanta, Book 1

Hadley Whitaker is a liar, a killer, and a chocoholic, but she’s getting better about the first two. Or maybe she’s just getting better at them. Some days it’s hard for her to tell fact from fiction, but only one truth matters. Goddess willing, she’s going to be the next Potentate of Atlanta. Even if it means playing nice with Midas Kinase, a shifter whose mysterious past might just be grimmer than her own.

When a bloodthirsty rogue begins hunting the city’s paranormals, Hadley ropes Midas into letting her work the case. But that rope starts to feel more like a noose as they come closer to discovering not only the rogue’s identity, but each other’s darkest secrets.

USA Today best-selling author Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this series. I read the series before it and had developed a not-so-great opinion of Hadley based on that. But when I finished the other series, I found that I wasn’t done and still needed more from that world. I’m glad I kept reading.

The book focuses on Hadley Whitaker, and it seems she’s really trying her best to atone for her mistakes. She’s learning how to be a better person and a productive member of society despite her many faults. I love seeing characters grow and seeing this side of her has been a reminder that things aren’t always as cut and dry as we may think they are to start with.

Something I enjoyed about this series is its location. As much as I adore Savannah, I had just read 8 books in a row that took place there. And in the previous series, nothing good ever came from visiting Atlanta. It was good to see the city getting some love. I also like that the different factions of supernatural creatures are learning to work together to keep their city safe.

I’ve found that I like Hadley’s sense of humor also. It’s similar to my own, and I can appreciate a snarky comment. I haven’t figured out how I feel about Midas yet, but I’m itching to find out more about Bishop. Ford is an interesting one too that I’m excited to see where Edwards goes with all this.

Overall, this is a great start to the series. Plenty to keep me entertained and written in a way that keeps my attention and keeps me guessing. I don’t like being able to solve the mystery right away, and I don’t have that problem in this book.

I am a Hailey Edwards fan, and a very big fan of the Beginner's Guide to Necromancy series. However, I wasn't excited about this series as I just couldn't forgive Amelie for her taking advantage of Grier and lying to her repeatedly in the other series. However, I read the book to see where Edwards would take us, and I'm glad I did. And now that I've finished I'm excited to continue with the series.

The Good:
- The writing, as with most Hailey Edwards novels, was excellent.
- The mystery within the story was well done and not predictable,
- Interesting groups in Atlanta that we're introduced too. Their well written and it was fun meeting them.
- The love story is a slow burn, with a Hero that is damaged and will melt your heart when you read his chapters.

The Odd (not really bad, just odd):
- In this book Amelie has taken to a new life as Hadley, so I expected some difference in her tone. But this book read like a completely different character in both the way she spoke to others and the way she acted.
- Hadley repeatedly thinks and says how thankful she is for all the help Linus has given her and how many things he's done to save and protect her. Now I'll admit, I adore Linus, however the issue is that she rarely admits how much Grier helped her. She even brings up her 'trial' and how Linus helped her, but forgot to mention that it was Grier who made sure she wasn't put into a type of slavery. Also, the amount of time she spent thinking about how much Linus had done for her was a bit much. At one point I thought she had a thing for him, and laughed out loud when another character thought the same thing.

Final thoughts are that this was a good read, I enjoyed it and look forward to more. That in itself is saying something. My few annoyances are more with the character herself, and as I've explained I'm biased.

Recommendation - Pick it up, but read the original series first!

Such a quick grabbing read I couldn't put the book down. My curiosity of what was going to happen next had my attention throughout the entire book. I would highly recommend this book series wait to continue this journey. Thank you for sharing your story with me and your other fans. Your writing is excellent and your adventures into our homes is a fantastic talent. Great job of sharing yourself with me. I so enjoyed the different characters and all the twist and turn that kept you rourting for the team players for the good guys.

Great storyline. I am glad the heroine is getting a second chance. Nobody should judge someone unless they have walked in their shoes. The only thing I did not like about the story was, the heroine has little of her own power. She has put in the time and effort to learn to fight, but all her strength comes from the evil entity possessing her. I don't think she is in full control, I think he is biding his time and only cooperating when he is bribed or gets a hit of power. But the story sure has me intrigued and I want to see if her power grows as it did for her ex bff in the original series.

I read this book as part of a book club selection. Based on the Amazon overview of the book, I wouldn’t have read this on my own. But I am so glad I did!
It was a little difficult understanding the secret Hadley is hiding as it seems this is a spin-off series. But the book was interesting enough that it held my attention and it eventually hooked me in. You can definitely read & enjoy it without reading the previous series. I read this in one sitting and am very curious as to how the relationship between Hadley & Midas will turn out. I enjoy her sense of humor and how strong and confident she is. I also liked the towing bond between them.
The mystery with the dead bodies turning up is very interesting and had me wondering /guessing the whole time. I’m glad I read this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly intriguing, and great start to redemption for Hadley.
Reviewed in Canada on August 12, 2019
I didn't think it was possible to make Hadley likeable, after all the betrayals and mistakes of hers in the Necromancy series. I really mostly wanted to read it initially because I love the authors work, and needed to know more about Midas. But I feel for Hadley, and understand more about her bad choices. And I like that she doesn't try to excuse her bad behaviour anymore, but that she also doesn't let it stop her from trying to be better now. Her insecurities about being a monster are there, but she fights against those voices and keeps working to help others. It's a great start to me forgiving her, and I highly recommend others start this series with an open mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful

it's taken me a couple months to get round to reading this book as I am not keen on redemption stories. Some events are just too hard to come back from and I was worried, with this world and characters that I have come to love, that 'Hadley's' story would ruin things for me. However Bailey Edwards has not let us down and I am glad that i did decide to read it, as then I would have missed out on this wonderful story. I did find it very hard in the beginning to associate Hadley with Amelie, they 'felt' different, but then we have never got her POV before. I also wold have liked a bit more information on how she became Hadley but once I got sucked in none of that mattered. Hadley herself is so more complicated than I had previously given her credit and her story is an interesting one. Atlanta, even from Grier's POV intrigued me and I loved the set up of more supernaturals and a livelier and busier life than Savannah. The team that Hadley inherits is also good fun and I hope we get to learn more about them in the future. The gwyllgi of course are fabulous and always shine, with Midas and Ford being wonderful. I can definitely see fireworks in Hadley's future. She did however prove herself to be a worthy heroine and and I look forward to her future story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but Missing Backstory.
Reviewed in Canada on July 3, 2023
This was a good read for me but not a great one. The world building is fantastic with lots of details about the various factions of Atlanta and the players that will no doubt make appearances in future books. The plot is relatively fast paced with an unknown creature running around town murdering people. The hero and heroine are complex characters with dark pasts that they are still trying to overcome. This is where I have difficulty truly enjoying the book. This is not really a stand alone series. It becomes obvious very quickly that in order to enjoy Hadley’s and Midas’ stories, you need to read previously published series. Important aspects of the main characters’ backstories are merely alluded to instead of being explained fully, which leaves the reader with a tremendous number of holes in the plot to try and understand. Unfortunately, that really detracts from the narrative and overall enjoyment of the book.

Enjoyable book.

I feel like the back story has been re-written a little. Amelia (now Hadley) didn’t have an awesome life growing up, but this makes it seem even harder, more abuse.

Liking the triangle of Hadley, Midas and Ford.

You kind of need to have read the Necromancer series for this book to make complete sense, the writer left a lot out that was necessary for the story of this book, but necessary for the over all story of Hadley.
