Dragon-Ridden (Dragon Ridden Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition
For Tate—last name unknown—everything prior to being found by pirates on an isolated piece of land is a blank. Her only clue to the person she was—a dragon tattoo capable of moving under its own will.
Brought to the city of Aurelia, Tate is forced to abandon the few people she knows to make her way alone. When a momentary impulse forces her to intervene in a situation she does not understand, she’ll find that reckless actions have unintended consequences.
Friendless and alone, Tate will have to be light on her feet if she wants to survive in a city where no one is what they seem. Monsters walk the labyrinth beneath Aurelia’s streets, and it’s there where Tate will find the biggest clue to her past. Unlocking her hidden memories might just be the only thing keeping her alive to prevent the coming war.

About the author
Writing is my first love. Even before I could read or put coherent sentences down on paper, I would beg the older kids to team up with me for the purpose of crafting ghost stories to share with our friends. This first writing partnership came to a tragic end when my coauthor decided to quit a day later and I threw my cookies at her head. This led to my conclusion that I worked better alone. Today, I stick with solo writing, telling the stories that would otherwise keep me up at night.
Most days (and nights) are spent feeding my tea addiction while defending the computer keyboard from my feline companions, Loki and Odin.

Long review: **warning-spoilers** The book jumps right into the storyline and then doles out backstory as we go along. The setting seems very Renaissance in the beginning but then we get references to glass containers, elevators, computers and sliding doors that seem very 21st century or beyond. A fallen civilization is hinted at. I like to explore new worlds and uncover mysteries when I read fantasy and the author seems to be setting up a series where we can do both. This character seems intelligent and independent but more respectful of authority than the main character in Shadow Messenger. There is less acting out with her and more action. I enjoyed the character but I had some issues with how long it took her to unleash her ‘superpower’ and how hobbled she seemed to be despite very dire circumstances. There was a slight romance here but it seems like the hero is more into it than she is. She seems to be hung up on someone from her past and most of the ‘romance’ is the hero’s concern over her possible demise. Their relationship could easily be a non-starter. I thought it odd that she was supposed to be the only surviving female dragon (which is a big deal?) but that very little was made of that except one passing reference about why she couldn’t possibly be a dragon. Sometimes the characters react in certain ways (look sad for instance) and you aren’t quite sure why this is a sad moment. I think some motivations and emotions could have been explored more. Also sometimes characters get lost. There are a lot of them, which I find interesting, but I think it may make it a bit difficult to keep all of their threads going throughout the book. For instance, Night is supposed to be a father (where is mom??) to two young cubs but his concern for them and their wherabaouts comes and goes. Very concerned in the tunnels, not at all once we get to the apartments. There is an attack at the apartments at one point and we have no idea where the cubs went of if they were there at all. As a parent my first thoughts are always of my children’s safety, so this really stood out to me. Then at the end of the story the Fulcrum and Dewdrop are mentioned but we don’t see them again, which is bothersome and feels unsatisfying since we don’t really get to see a tie up with Kairi and the war either. Overall though I enjoyed the character development and look forward to meeting them again in future books. I noticed the typos but it did not take away from my enjoyment of the story or my immersion in it. That said, there were a few slang phrases that DID throw me out of the world, although I found this to be more of an issue in Pathfinder. One thing I’ve noticed with all three of the author’s main characters is that they are underdogs who have to get established in their world. The men are alpha types who are already established and very much in charge. I’m assuming that this gives our heroines somewhere to go in terms of growth and lets us root for them as they discover who they are. In Tate’s case, literally. One last thought, and this may just be my thing, but I generally have a problem with people enduring torture and serious bodily damage and then being up for action and adventure right after. I will say that the author seems to go there a lot in each of her books. I’ve noticed that this is a problem with the fantasy genre as a whole though. She isn’t any worse about it than many other popular authors. Altogether a promising new series and a promising new author.
This book was just so fun and being in Tate’s mind was just so easy and seamless. She has such a strong moral compass but a very mysterious past which I love in a main character. She inspires loyalty around her and built strong, emotional relationships, which are the heart of the book. There is a hint of a romance, but you can tell it will be a slow burn.
Overall great book that I highly recommend
Side note : Her past could honestly be a prequel someday that I would 100% read.
PROS
1) Has the setup to develop into a strong story, especially if more attention is paid to advancement and expansion on what has already been laid out in the introductory period.
2) Like the characters introduced so far. Antagonists and protagonists. Don’t care to be overwhelmed with too many characters to keep track of in a series.
3) World building has began, where some of it is pictographic, as well as illustrative enough to actually begin to visualize it in the mind’s eye. Expansion here would also be great.
CONS
1) Typos, typos, typos! Incorrect grammar! There are way too many apps out there available today to help a self-published author correct these. No reason for these
in today’s age of electronics!!
Also at very heavy and involved times there’s key words just completely missing, where the reader is thrown for a loop, pulled out of the flow and excitement of the story, and has to figure out what is meant.
Example: In one torture scene against our Main, she says (paraphrased here) that she’ll remember each member in the audience that’s watching once she gets out of there, and she’ll make them! Make them what??? Pay, Beg for Mercy, Regret Doing Nothing??
2) Uses made up names, descriptions solely pertaining to this main world we’re learning about, and assumes the reader knows this fantasy world inside and out, without any explanation. Someone else mentioned someone simply called AI, which we are left to assume it means Artificial Intelligence. (This is just one example, I don’t feel like turning this into a book report.)
Oh yes, and an interesting fact that could have been used to pique the reader’s curiosity is the usage of the name Ryo-which is a common Japanese name used in their culture, which means “Dragon.”
Curiosity and interest is what keeps the reader engaged!!! This also shows the author did some research, and that this wasn’t just pitched together.
3) Skips around at times, where you’re suddenly expected to once again, figure it out, and what the prominence is at this particular point and time.
Writers should NEVER assume or expect, especially in a 1st book series, the reader is following their exact line of thought, and/or perspective, and even more so in a fantasy/science fiction setting.
4) One of my biggest pet peeves is at the end of the book, during the wrap up, where it clearly shows another 20-25 pages, 5% left, and you turn the page expecting more dialogue, only to find its being used with an excerpt to hawk the next in the series. If I’m not mistaken, there is a way to include such material without it going against the actual page count.
Overall I didn’t find it terribly lacking, or I would’ve went for less than average on the rating. I will begin the next one, and hope that many of what happened in the first is cleared up and cleaned up, or at least by the 3rd. If not, I don’t see myself being able to read through all 6 in the series.

There‘a a wonderful level of sarcasm and sass that shines through. Her characters feel fully formed and multi dimensional.
My first read had me initially confused as to where the book was going and it was the style of writing that had me hooked. Having finished the book in one sitting, I moved straight on to the next.
A firm lover of the fantasy and sci-fy genre, this book was a pleasure to read.
I don't know if I ship the potential romance
