This book contains all the elements needed for an addictive new cozy mystery series. Main character that stumbled into solving murders? Check! Eccentric and whimsical characters and settings? Check! Possible love interest/partner? Check! Throw in a dog or three and Johnston's created a world I want to spend more time in. Realistic enough to have relatable problems, amusing enough to include situations most normies don't find themselves in. My only complaint is that there's not another 5-10 books waiting for me to binge on. Definitely worth reading!

A quick read. A great distraction from the world.

Dog Sitter Detective hits all the sweet spots just as it should. The mystery unfolds at the right pace, without Johnston cheating on any details or clues. The protagonist's backstory and struggles feel real and are neither minor nor overwhelming. The dogs are, of course, excellent and also integral to the story. Would I read a sequel? Why yes, I've already preordered it. Just what I was looking for.

Antony Johnston, author of the Brigitte Sharp thrillers and Alex Rider graphic novels, does a decent job on this (his first) cozy. The book’s beginning is a bit slow as the author introduces his characters, but then moves along nicely. Missing are some of the quirky supporting characters longtime cozy readers might expect, but that’s not altogether a bad thing. The MC proved a bit hit-and-miss, as did some of the character’s inner monologue. In several instances, had I not known the character’s name and thus gender, I would have assumed the MC was male. The book also suffered from repetitiveness, particularly when the MC was going over clues in her mind or laying out the order of events. Finally, I was disappointed that the dogs didn’t play a larger role in the solution, i.e., the MC’s understanding of behavior specific to the breed. A dog’s action is an element in the solution to the mystery, but it didn’t ring completely true give the context and relationship to the victim. Still, as a debut, The Dog Sitter Detective holds the promise of a better second outing from this talented writer.

This was a fun read and an excellent beginning to what I hope is a long-running cozy mystery series.

Loved this book and appreciated the characters throughout.

Absolutely adorable cozy mystery, which I like even more because I happened to catch one of the clues quite early in the book, so I felt very smug when I got to the reveal at the end.

The protagonist Gwinny has a little bit of the Agatha Raisin messy personality type, but less gratingly than Agatha. And the dogs are lovely.

Ms. Tuffel was a delight, and felt truly grounded in London. I greatly enjoyed the story and hope there are more to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!

I really enjoyed this entertaining book. The series lead, former actress Gwinny Tuffel, is a hoot and full of attitude – I’ll definitely want to catch up with her in the next book. Her side-kick, retired DCI Alan Birch is a good foil for her too. The plot skips along, supported by a body in the library, a host of quirky characters and a country-house setting. It’s a thoroughly escapist read, which is a precious thing right now.

Oooh, this was good.
It's absolutely a cosy crime novel, one with fun, memorable, just OTT enough characters. The murder is deliciously unravelled, with enough clues laid out that it really is your 'fault' if you haven't worked it out by the end. Really looking forward to the next one.
