Detective Sergeant Washington Poe is in court, fighting eviction from his beloved and isolated croft, when he is summoned to a backstreet brothel in Carlisle where a man has been beaten to death with a baseball bat. Poe is confused - he hunts serial killers and this appears to be a straightforward murder-by- - but his attendance was requested personally, by the kind of people who prefer to remain in the shadows.

As Poe and the socially awkward programmer Tilly Bradshaw delve deeper into the case, they are faced with seemingly unanswerable questions: despite being heavily vetted for a high-profile job, why does nothing in the victim's background check out? Why was a small ornament left at the murder scene - and why did someone on the investigation team steal it? And what is the connection to a flawlessly executed bank heist three years earlier, a heist where nothing was taken . . .

Love the characters (Tilly and Poe particularly) and the twists and turns of the plot. Highly recommend this series to all.

Another fantastic twisty satisfying Poe and Brandshaw mystery. This book was so well written with a layered plot and so many twists and turns. It was exceptional!

Poe and Tilly are such a great couple for thrillers. I particularly love the author's Acknowledgement page where he mentioned he's more Poe-like. "Dead Ground" is very different from the previous three books in this series. I got really intrigued in its spy-games, cyber-threats and human-greed. Mike W. Craven is a captivating storyteller. Time for me to move on to his next book "The Botanist". Keep up the good work, Mike!

This is another good outing for Poe and Tilly in this rather complex or intricate story. They are probably about as eccentric as I would like them to be to keep the tales grounded though. Craven is a master at assembling the ingredients in his plots, I must say. There a lot of twists and turns, and great research, so readers do need to pay attention. It would probably help to have read the prequels too. I can't wait for this great storyteller's next effort/s.

Poe and Tilly are back with another intricate crime to solve - 2 in fact. They may be connected but it takes Tilly’s brilliance and Poe’s doggedness and experience to tease it out.
The secondary characters play their parts well, and I didn’t solve the puzzle before Poe did, so the author has judged the reveals perfectly imo.

Oh Poe, I love you so!! The same goes for Tilly of course; together they are without doubt one of my favorite character duos and this series is one of my all time favorites. Even though I was trying to wait a little to make the wait for the next book shorter, I simply couldn't resist Dead Ground any longer... I was simply too excited to be meeting up with these two again. And surprise surprise: it was another absolutely fantastic ride! I might be a bit biased when it comes to this series, but the fact is that I always enjoy ever single minute of my time with Tilly and Poe and the plot is once again brilliant. The banter, the mysterious murder case, things escalating, suspense, action, intrigue and a healthy dose of sarcastic humor and brilliant conversations; what's not to love? I would suggest reading these in order to fully enjoy the character background and development, and every single book is absolutely worth your time in the first place. If you haven't met Tilly and Poe yet and enjoy fast, action packed and entertaining detective thrillers, you should definitely find time to do so! Brilliant series, another brilliant sequel and is it time for the next one to be published yet?

I think these books are silly,
But I do like Poe and Tilly.
That’s my verdict on the lot:
Good characters, dumb plot.
Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2023
Definitely a good read. Easy to get into. I’m not a fan of military type books but this one is largely a murder mystery so it wasn’t bad. The Characters were interesting. Parts were funny. I’ll definitely go on and read the next one.

This ,and the others in the Washington Poe series, are just the best I have read in a very long time . I read a lot, and it's very rare for me to binge read every night . I just can't wait to follow all the twists and turns . The fabulous working and friendship between Tilly and Poe is so honest, I feel I am with them in the room . This is by far an exceptional thriller . Im on to the next right now . Thank you, M.W. Craven .
