“What I am looking for―what I desperately need, Mrs. Weiss―is a spy.”

Adolf Hitler is still a distant rumble on the horizon, but a Jewish spymaster and his courageous spies uncover a storm of Nazi terror in their own backyard.

In the summer of 1933, a man named Adolf Hitler is the new and powerful anti-Semitic chancellor of Germany. But in Los Angeles, no-nonsense secretary Liesl Weiss has concerns much closer to home. The Great Depression is tightening its grip and Liesl is the sole supporter of two children, an opinionated mother, and a troubled brother.

Leon Lewis is a Jewish lawyer who has watched Adolf Hitler’s rise to power―and the increase in anti-Semitism in America―with growing alarm. He believes Nazi agents are working to seize control of Hollywood, the greatest propaganda machine the world has ever known. The trouble is, authorities scoff at his dire warnings.

When Liesl loses her job at MGM, her only choice is to work with Leon Lewis and the mysterious Agent Thirteen to spy on her friends and neighbors in her German American community. What Leon Lewis and his spies find is more chilling―and more dangerous―than any of them suspected.

Code Name Edelweiss is based on a true story, unknown until recent years: How a lone Jewish lawyer and a handful of amateur spies discovered and foiled Adolf Hitler’s plan to take over Hollywood.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Stephanie Landsem’s transfixing Code Name Edelweiss (Tyndale House, $26.99, 9781496460660) is peppered with rich descriptions of Los Angeles in 1933. Amid widespread unemployment and poverty, few people in LA are fully aware of the growing threat of Nazism following the appointment of Adolf Hitler as chancellor of Germany. Like many, Liesl Weiss is preoccupied with her own troubles; she has just lost her job but must take care of her children, brother and mother. Jewish lawyer Leon Lewis is concerned about the growing threat of the Nazis and believes they plan to infiltrate the Hollywood film industry. To stop them, he is enlisting spies for a dangerous mission. Liesl finds Leon’s fears absurd, but she needs the cash, so she signs on as a spy. The more information she uncovers, the more alarmed she becomes, and she soon realizes she cannot remain neutral and must choose a side. From its suspenseful start to its exciting ending, Code Name Edelweiss commands attention. Landsem sustains tension throughout as Leon’s team works to outpace the Nazis. Liesl, along with the elusive Agent Thirteen, spies on members of the German American community, hoping to find clues and deter the Nazis’ plans. The central characters all have fascinating backstories, though Liesl is crafted particularly well. She is sensible and dependable, and her lovely friendships add depth to the story. The novel is also enlivened by a subtle yet vital strand of romance. BookPage

Amateur spies attempt to foil a 1933 Nazi plot in this high-voltage thriller from Landsem (
In A Far Off Land). After German-born single mother Liesl Weiss is fired from her secretarial job at MGM Studios, she’s desperate to find work to support her children. Her search leads her to Leon Lewis, a Jewish attorney, who offers her handsome pay to spy on the Friends of New Germany, an organization he suspects is plotting against American Jews. Despite her misgivings, Liesl is driven by her Christian sense of morality to accept the offer. Soon, Leon, Liesl, and the mysterious Agent Thirteen uncover Joseph Goebbels’s plan to transform Hollywood into a Nazi propaganda machine. As they work to foil the plot, Liesl confronts fears for her own (and her children’s) safety; guilt at hiding her double life from her family; and latent sorrow over her policeman husband’s disappearance two years earlier. It adds up to a riveting spy story and a nuanced look at the way religion can either justify prejudice or fuel moral action. Liesl’s adventures will keep readers hooked to the last page. (Mar.) 1930s Hollywood with Intrigue, Amateur Spies, Complex Characters - Based on True Events
Code Name Edelweiss by Stephanie Landsem is based on the true story of Adolf Hitler's plan to take over Hollywood. Set in 1933 Los Angeles, this story brings pre-WWII to a setting I've not considered before. I've read several novels set in Europe that feature Jewish people facing the discrimination inflicted by Nazis, but it was especially sobering to read about this occurring in the US. Secret societies. Shunned neighbors. Constant suspicion. When Liesl Weiss loses her job at MGM Studios, her responsibility as breadwinner for four family members in the midst of the Depression leads her to consider an outrageous offer - serve as a spy to infiltrate a German American organization and uncover evidence of its true motives. Leon Lewis is the Jewish lawyer who hires her to help prove his theory that Adolf Hitler wants to use Hollywood as a powerful propaganda machine to advance his hate-filled agenda. And Agent 13 is the mysterious stranger who works undercover to assist Leon and Liesl with their quest for the truth. This novel was so immersive and intense, I was anxious for the characters who put themselves in jeopardy to achieve a higher purpose. This is the first book I've read by Ms. Landsem and I was impressed with her outstanding writing and compelling characters. I love this beautiful cover that perfectly captures the tone and setting of this story - kudos to the designers at Tyndale House.Thank you to Dreamscape Media for access to the audiobook narrated by Cady Zuckerman and Neil Hellegers.

I have not read anything by Stephanie Landsem and I’m grateful to now have a new author to follow. I was unaware of this bit of American history that sadly was a mirror of what was also occurring in Hitler’s Germany. The novel is set up nicely for a sequel and I certainly hope the author considers returning to 1930’s Hollywood. I was also struck by the frightening parallels we see today in our own far-right politics. Hopefully we, as a nation, will learn from that tragic and not-so-long-ago period of history and refuse to repeat it.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Stephanie Landsem for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC audiobook for Code Name Edelweiss coming out March 7, 2023. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

In the summer of 1933, Adolf Hitler is rising to power in Germany. The people are desperate for a great leader. Hitler is an anti-Semitic chancellor who is able to manipulate people. But in Los Angeles, a secretary to Hollywood producers, Liesl Weiss has concerns much closer to home. The Great Depression is making it hard to survive. Liesl is the sole supporter of two children, a complaining mother, and a wayward brother.

Leon Lewis is a Jewish lawyer who has watched Adolf Hitler’s career and the increase in anti-Semitism in America―with great alarm. He believes Nazi spies are working to gain control of Hollywood in order to push their anti-Semitic propaganda. The problem is that the police won’t listen to his desperate warnings.

When Liesl loses her job at MGM, her only choice is to work with Lewis and the mysterious Agent Thirteen to spy on her friends and neighbors in her German American community. What Leon Lewis and his spies find is more than they ever could’ve imagined. They may be in greater danger than they suspected.

Code Name Edelweiss is based on a true story, unknown until recent years: How a lone Jewish lawyer and a handful of amateur spies discovered and foiled Adolf Hitler’s plan to take over Hollywood.

Overall, I really enjoyed listening to this story! I didn’t realize it was based on a true story. I haven’t heard much about Hitler trying to get into Hollywood. Spies working against him in the United States is just so fascinating to me. There were times where I felt like Liesl’s family really held her back from becoming a good spy. It’s not the same era, but I was hoping for something more like the TV show the Americans. Liesl’s mother and brother just seemed to complain about things the whole time. It also seemed like Liesl couldn’t let go of her husband even after she found out the truth. I’m not sure how long ago that was, but all of these things seemed to hinder her. I would’ve liked to see more spying done. Maybe there will be another book? Even so, I love books set in the 1930s and it’s a fascinating topic.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys 1930s/WWII spy novels!

Code Name Edelweiss by Stephanie Landsem is an outstanding novel of a little know part of American history. In 1933 the Nazi party in Germany attempted to take over the Hollywood film industry to eliminate the Jewish studio heads and use movies for its own propaganda purposes.
If I could have given this book more than 5 stars I would have. It is both thoroughly researched and brilliantly written.
The circumstances that allowed the Friends of New Germany to take hold and flourish are told through the lives of struggling Los Angelinos post WWI and the Depression. Using historically real characters in the local German leadership and the work of the Jewish lawyer, Leon Lewis, Ms. Landsem takes us on emotionally powerful journey detailing how Mr. Lewis’ operatives, Liesl Weiss and agent Thirteen, infiltrated the Friends of New Germany in an attempt to obtain incriminating information and to thwart the group’s mission.
Ms. Landsem’s writing is superb and the drama was totally cinematic. The variable pacing is appropriate to the various elements in the storyline. At times the story came alive right off the page.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Everyone should be aware of this history and should understand its parallels to present day.

This was an absolutely incredible book!! It was very well written and the reader quickly becomes immersed in this top-notch and suspenseful story. The descriptions of life in 1933 Los Angeles were vivid and seemed quite realistic, while the suspense makes it very difficult to put this book down.
I am a native Californian and an avid WWII history buff, but had never heard even a hint of this chapter of US history. I have a great uncle who was a Hollywood director and producer during this era, so I especially enjoyed getting a feel for what aspects of his life may have been like!
I am wholeheartedly recommending this to my friends and highly recommend it to you, as well!!

Right from the beginning, I was hooked!! I loved seeing Eisel’s discoveries and growth as a character! To realize this is actual history and what it took for these people to take these risks against such a real threat was inspiring!

This was an absolutely riveting novel, and I enjoyed it immensely. If you like Film Noir, you'll love this book. I laughed out loud at the line, "The speakeasy was dark and smelled of late nights and bad decisions. Cigarette smoke hung in a thick fog along the low ceiling, and a sorry-looking three-piece band plucked out an off-key rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue." I could almost hear Edward G. Robinson in the background. Highly recommend.
