Tae Keller meets Tracey Baptiste in a tale of generational trauma, told with a cryptozoological twist.

Paleontology-loving Haven West and her older sister, Margie, have hardly talked with their mom since she retreated into a deep depression. Each morning Haven wonders if it’s going to be a “good” or “bad” day, and the only thing that seems to occupy her mom is collecting fossils for her bone garden.

But one night, after an ominous moonlight heart-to-heart, her mom disappears—right before Haven discovers she’s inherited a monstrous family trait. It turns out that she is the latest in a long line of cryptids, a past her mom has been hiding. Suddenly, the Texas terrain is full of ghostly dinosaur silhouettes and Haven is breaking out in scales at all the wrong moments. Even worse, she doesn’t know whom she can trust with this information.

Since the only person who could guide her through this has vanished, Haven sets off on the road trip of a lifetime with Margie and their new friend Rye in tow. Together, they’re determined to find her mom and finally get some answers, hopefully before Haven’s secret is revealed . . .

A beautifully written story that touches your heart in so many ways. A little fantasy, a little adventure with a prehistoric twist that shows how important love, family, and friendships are in our lives. I didn’t want it to end.

An imaginative, heartfelt tale about the quest for truth and identity. Ghostly prehistoric animals provide thrilling fantasy, and real-world details of sun-baked Texas wheat fields and rivers are vividly and pleasurably drawn. Readers are sure to enjoy Haven, the spunky, shape-shifting narrator who is the novel’s beating heart.

This was a really unique story that wasn't afraid to delve into the fallout from a parents mental illness (depression) and how it impacts two sisters (a pre teen and a teenager). But it was told in an imaginative, fun story with fantastical events and interesting paleontologic fact that kept the pages turning. It was a genuinely fun read and I think it would be great for any preteen.

This was such a captivating story and so beautifully told. Haven's mom has been suffering from depression and she disappears one day. Haven, her older sister, and her new friend set off on a road trip across Texas to find her. But there's a lot more going on, as Haven keeps catching glimpses of the world as it was long ago when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. After she follows a strange calling to go into the river, Haven discovers that she is has the ability to shape-shift into an amphibious creature! This deeply-layered story weaves themes of paleontology, mythology, identity, friendship, and mental health into a fascinating adventure of self-discovery and facing up to difficult truths. It's one that will stay with me for a long time.
