An instant New York Time bestseller!

Carry On meets Arthurian legend in this subversive, “delightfully original and whimsical” (Kirkus Reviews) young adult fantasy about what happens after the chosen one wins the kingdom and has to get married to keep it…and to stay alive.

Arek hadn’t thought much about what would happen after he completed the prophecy that said he was destined to save the Kingdom of Ere from its evil ruler. So now that he’s finally managed to (somewhat clumsily) behead the evil king (turns out magical swords yanked from bogs don’t come pre-sharpened), he and his rag-tag group of quest companions are at a bit of a loss for what to do next.

As a temporary safeguard, Arek’s best friend and mage, Matt, convinces him to assume the throne until the true heir can be rescued from her tower. Except that she’s dead. Now Arek is stuck as king, a role that comes with a magical catch: choose a spouse by your eighteenth birthday, or wither away into nothing.

With his eighteenth birthday only three months away, and only Matt in on the secret, Arek embarks on a desperate bid to find a spouse to save his life—starting with his quest companions. But his attempts at wooing his friends go painfully and hilariously wrong…until he discovers that love might have been in front of him all along.

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-After defeating the evil usurper of the throne of Ere in the land of Chickpea, Arek agrees to temporarily become king while he and his party search for the true living heir to the throne. Unfortunately for him, the heir perished while locked in a tower, and Arek finds himself magically bound to the crown. Incidentally, the person who holds the throne of Ere must marry before their 18th birthday-and Arek turns 18 in just three months. Not wanting to pressure his best friend, whom Arek is in love with, the new king instead sets out to casually woo every other member of the party in turn, following the guidance of the long-dead princess's journal. Much in the way that TJ Klune's The Extraordinaries plays off superhero tropes, Lukens relies on the audience's knowledge of and expectations for fantasy to fill in much of the worldbuilding, orienting the story firmly around Arek's attempts to find a spouse. The attempts themselves are humorous, and since the plot is structured like a fairy tale, the ending is satisfying but unsurprising. Similarly, the characters have the same dynamic as a well-organized Dungeons & Dragons party and are well rounded and easy to root for. Most characters are queer, and there is no homophobia in the land of Chickpea. VERDICT Purchase for tabletop RPG fans and where fantasy titles are popular.-Austin Ferraro, Brambleton Lib./Loudoun County P.L., Brambleton, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. The characters have the same dynamic as a well-organized Dungeons & Dragons party and are well rounded and easy to root for." ― School Library Journal

"Reading like the love child of a late-night D&D session gone awry and a romantic drama, Lukens has crafted a delightfully original and whimsical narrative." ―
Kirkus Reviews

"Lukens has created a magically expansive world where there's no homophobia and the only roadblock to romance is having the courage to delve into your own heart. An adventure that's both madcap and tender." ―

King Arek the ✨️bi disaster✨️

King Arek the ✨️bi disaster✨️
I was told to buy this book because it had ✨️gay content✨️ so the first few pages where the main character is describing Bethany were a surprise, and not a wanted one. If Amazon still let us look inside books I would have known he was a ✨️bi disaster ✨️ from the start and wouldn't have been blindsided by the description of her "ample bosom".The book itself is an easy read. It reads like fanfic of "what comes next" after a dnd party defeats the big bad, becomes the heroes, and now there's the world to contend with.I enjoyed it, but the two pining idiots don't get together til about page 300.Oh, and there's "confess your true feelings" pollen that definitely has its roots in a fanfic trope of a different type of pollen that definitely made me laugh.

My daughter and I read this together and we both enjoyed the humor and lighthearted tone. The characters are fun and complex and flawed and loyal and generous and forgiving and just generally lovely. We both also appreciated how homophobia didn’t seem to exist in this kingdom—it was a glimpse of what it would be like if one’s sexuality were a non-issue. And that was refreshing and lovely too.

Overall this is a fun, exciting, and endearing story. If you like fantasy stories with magic and romance, definitely read this.

This was one of the cutest things I have read. I know some people might find the relationship between the two annoying or aggravating. But for me I just found it ridiculously cute and some what relatable. That what if, denial, and fear of weather or not someone who is your best friend could be more. Or if saying your feeling aloud would ruin your friend ship or not. Those are very normal and confusing feelings.

I loved how every time he tried to follow the journal with one of their other friends it happened with Matt.

The only thing I don't think I was a fan of in this book was the constant talk of inappropriate boners. which is why it was hard to pick between a 4 star and 3 star. I am choosing to just ignore that and go with how much I fangirled and sometime got emotional over the relationship between the two main characters.

This is exactly the book I want and didn’t know I needed. So This is Ever After is a queer YA fantasy romcom that delivers the right amount of charm and angst that just hit me in the feels. Arek has completed the prophecy and defeated the evil king. Now what? He suddenly finds himself king, in a throne he never wanted, and also apparently must find his soulmate before he turns 18 (in 3 months) or else he dies. What comes next are a series of laughable and hilarious attempts at wooing his friends who originally joined him on his prophecy-fulfilling journey when the person he truly wants is just unreachably right there beside him.

FT Lukens has somehow written a funny, quirky romantic comedy in a high fantasy setting, during what should have already been the happily ever after. I appreciated how queer it is and how unbound the story is by gender norms. I loved Arek and Matt, and how they are completely blinded by their love for each other. Normally, I would find this type of pining and obliviousness annoying, but FT Lukens made it completely charming and (shall I say it?) swoon-worthy. Around them are a cast of characters that are just as lovable and delightful. This book just brought me a lot of joy.

So This is Ever After is a joyful and heartfelt fantasy romcom that will make you swoon.

I read it in one day and cried through the second half. So many good characters, so funny and heartfelt. What does happen after the final battle? There’s still work to do.

I thought this was cute, but the pacing felt odd to me. At times it felt rushed then at others it felt like it dragged. I found the main character kind of irritating. I did like the society where one could pursue any gender without stigma was a neat premise.

Good story but took me a while to get into the characters.

I'll admit I bought this book because of the cover--and because I *wanted* a wonderful story to go with it.

After having finished it, I'll say it's a *good* story, but not all I'd hoped. I felt it did more telling than showing, and while it was interesting to have such a large cast of characters it kept me from really getting to know the characters I was supposed to be rooting for. I also would have liked a little more romance than waiting for literally the last scene.

I did enjoy the plot twists, and while you knew they were coming, they were still satisfying. I also thought a lot more of the humor worked than didn't, and the pacing was nice and brisk.

In the end, the book was good enough that I looked into more by the author, and I'm halfway into Deeper Waters and have to say I'm finding it much more compelling this than this one. Knowing their potential, I hope F.T. Lukens keeps writing books for us!

Can we discuss this gorgeous cover?! It might be the prettiest on my shelf! This book was one of my most anticipated reads of 2022 and it did not disappoint one bit! A Romantasy friends to lovers rom com with so much wonderful humor and LGBTQIA+ representation, I was all in after one chapter. I definitely get Merlin (the tv series) vibes if Arthur and Merlin finally fell in love like we wanted them to! What makes this book different? Unique? Besides all of the above this story starts at the end of the quest, which leaves our characters asking themselves how to live their happily ever after on a their world is flipped upside down and they have lives that resemble nothing of the past! I literally can’t recommend this book enough, gtg ordering everything FT Lukens has ever written and sending a copy of this book to my friends & fam who will finally see themselves in a book! The narration by @kevinrfree was WONDERFUL!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mutual (idiots) pining at it's best
Reviewed in Poland on February 6, 2023
The story was really fun and enjoyable, despite being quite predictable. But that's what I like about this book - I wanted a good, saving-the-princess, chaotic-friends-circle, quest-goes-wrong-but-at-least-theres-wine, childhood-friends-to-lovers, idiots-falling-in-love, mutual-pinning, but-they-are-too-stupid-to-notice rom-com and I got EXACTLY THAT. The jokes were delivered well, the angst was really good written, the mutual pining? Chef's kiss. I love those doofoses. F.T.Lukens absolutely bought be with their writing and I have already preordered their new book, so... I believe that says a lot. Highly recommended for people who like slow burns!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous book.

So this is ever after by f.t lukens is a gorgeous read, it's slow in parts but builds up nicely. The story starts at the ending of Arek's matts and his party's adventure, where he hacks off the head of the vile one, the previous ruler of the kingdom, chickpea. The sword definitely didn’t come pre-sharpened. Arek assumes the throne, with some peer pressure, while they found the princess. Who had passed away in the tower she was trapped in. So Arek becomes king, and he's trapped on that throne.

The story is a lovely read about how arek accepts his position and even begins to like it. About the love the rest of his party finds (even though he attempted to woo them all.) Self growth and more. Arek is let's say, oblivious and has you smacking your forehead agaisnt you palm a few times. But he learns, in a slow yet bueaiful way.

All the characters are described so wonderfully that you can see them in your mind every time you're reading their names.

The ending made me cry, these characters will definitely hold a special place in my Heart.

At 341 pages, this book only took me around 4 hours which I spred over two days.

I will say though, there's some inappropriate parts not suitable for 14yr olds, I'd say this book would be best for 15-16 up. There was also some writing about the 17yr old characters devolving boners ect, which yes is just a part of life, but me as a 20yr old reader found thoes parts rather uncomfortable.

Overall I highly recommend this book, expecally if your a fast reader. I usally donate my books when I'm finished reading, but this one is staying up on my shelf. To re read time and time again.
