A pioneering, politically relevant novel by award-winning British journalist, Tam Hussein - shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for Journalism 2022.

'You're a sick bastard.'
'Everyone has some darkness,' replied Anis.

Anis is the latest victim of London's knife epidemic.

To journalist Sid, the story is an excellent opportunity to be recognised and take a swipe at the Mayor of London's policies. But as he digs he realises that the lead up to Anis' death didn't begin in London, but on the killing fields of. Syria.

As Sid begins to piece together what happened, it has devastating consequences for him and those around him...

Tam Hussein's thrilling debut novel explores contemporary issues through fiction. Using his own experience and creative writing, Darkness Inside promises to be one of the darkest, most timely and relevant novels of the year by one of the UK's most original journalists.

Really enjoyed this book- acts as a detective novel of sorts where the investigators are journalists trying to figure out who killed a seemingly innocent guy and why. As the plot unfolds, the reader learns with the journalist, Sid ( and later,Martha) that the murder has ties to the the war is Syria. Rivalries begun there travel home to London where former fighters have rejoined the workforce, trying to begin again. The reader gets an inside look at how young men may be seduced into a war and how it can echo in their current lives. Simultaneously, we see how a journalist becomes enticed by the larger story and how this obsession can undermine judgment and integrity. The novel looks closely at the darkness each of us possess and how we must grapple with our want for power, access, recognition as these desires can often encourage us to manipulate or harm others- often with dire consequences.

Excellent narrative and use of fiction to illustrate the cultural, familial, and religious influences that are often the main drivers of foreign fighters.

A sophisticated, fast paced mystery noir set in London, Syria and Libya. The author’s experience as an investigative journalist and deep understanding of his subjects and their vernaculars make this an engrossing, informative, fun read. Highly recommended.

I loved this on Kindle. I didn’t know much about Jihadism and except the stuff I watched on the news. But the author gets it. The plot twists are so interesting.

An interesting read, with a good mix of detailed subjects, including journalists and the arena they work in. This book delves further into the world of crime and ideological causes that few people see or understand, prompting the reader to ask more questions of the characters and themselves. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars great novel

The Darkness Inside is a gripping novel from Tam Hussein, following a young journalist trying to balance journalistic integrity and his idea of success.

It spans the world from Pakistan to Syria and Italy, merging the Characters’ realities in cosmopolitan London. The readers get a vivid portrayal of how characters from different backgrounds can coexist, but also how they clash, bring their rivalries home to be battled out on the streets.

It’s also a glimpse into the covert world of journalism, showing the many other sides of the news stories that we don’t know about or experience. The novel does a great job of grappling with the price journalists and victims pay in the pursuit of telling a story, and the consequences of chasing a story too far. He has fun putting unsuspecting characters into worlds that are beyond what they can handle in a plot that keeps taking unexpected turns. All makes for a fantastic read!
