About the author
Ian Ross lives in England, and has been researching and writing historical fiction for over a decade.
His 'Twilight of Empire' series, set in the 4th Century AD, followed the rise of the Emperor Constantine and the transformation of the Roman world. His latest novel, 'Battle Song', will be the first of a trilogy set in medieval England, during the dramatic conflicts of the 13th Century Barons War.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid Mid 13th Century Martial Marathon with clever plot..
I’d never read the author before. The standard is very, very High! The book gets ones attention immediately. Some good, youthful brutality from the outset. The cast of characters are perfectly well thought out, and handsomely delivered in a fantastic plot. However, what stood out to me the most were the intricate descriptive details about the medieval battle scenes. The author did not shy away from vividly portraying the chaos and violence of warfare. Every sword clashing against armour, every arrow piercing flesh, and every horse thundering across the battlefield was described in such detail that it felt as though I was right there in the action, experiencing it firsthand. The author also did an excellent job of creating a sense of urgency and tension during those battles. The reader could feel the fear and adrenaline of the characters as they fought for their lives. In addition, the strategic manoeuvres and tactics used during the battles were explained in a way that made sense and added to the overall realism of the story. Overall, the author's attention to detail in depicting the medieval battles was truly captivating and made the book an exciting and immersive read.
I was blown away by the author's skill and mastery of his writing craft, and was hooked from the very first page. The characters are brilliantly drawn, with each one coming to life in a way that's both vivid and compelling. This is the authors first book in this era having previously written about Romans. I’m so impressed, I’ll read those books next!
In Summary:
Whether you're a fan of historical fiction, martial epics, or just great storytelling in general, this book is an absolute must-read. I can't recommend it highly enough - it's easily one of the best books I've read in years! AND it’s only £0.99p at the moment and was published a few weeks ago! If you're looking for a high quality author who can grip your attention from the very first page, then look no further! This author's skill is comparable to Bernard Cornwell, and his writing is nothing short of fantastic. The characters are expertly crafted, and the plot is both thrilling and thought-provoking. I read this book in just two sittings, and cannot recommend it enough. If you're a fan of great storytelling and skilled writing, then this author is a must-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly recommend
As I have read all this authors previous novels I was looking forward to this one despite the new tangent of the novel from his previous stuff. I wasn't disappointed either as the story telling as usual is excellent and you are soon drawn into the world of Adam de Norton and Simon de Montfort. It's been a long gap between novels from Ian ross but this is well worth the wait trust me. Fast paced and action packed it's a rollercoaster of a first novel in the series and I'm looking forward to the next in the series later this year. Anyone who likes this historical period will enjoy this as the characters unfold page by page but as it's just a great story anyone should enjoy it really especially if you are familiar with the authors previous works. Exceptional writing

5.0 out of 5 stars The thrill of the tourney
An evocative, well-researched and well-crafted novel about the life of a knight and squire in the 13th century.
Ian Ross is an established historical fiction author and one of joys of this book is getting a feel for life in chivalrous times. Admittedly, it's life from the gentleman's view but that means you can better appreciate the history of a Britain where royalty and nobles vie over where power lies.
It's the first book in a series, following Adam de Norton, a dispossessed young squire, as he learns life and combat lessons from the abrasive Sir Robert de Dunstanville.
I regularly dip into different eras of fictional history and this is one of the better written (alongside the Master of War series by David Gilman). You genuinely fear for Adam's life and that of his romantic interest - despite knowing he's got to survive.

3.0 out of 5 stars A cracking read
I was recommended this book by a friend who recognised the name de Dunstanville and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially given that this chap is the grandson of my forbear.
The action is well paced and the atmosphere all absorbing; some of the characters are sometimes inconsistent but that does nothing to detract from what is fundamentally a solid and enjoyable read. I can’t wait to see where Adam and Robert’s paths lead them next.
A cracking read

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling and fast paced ride
I am not familiar with medieval England despite being a big fan of historical fiction but this book pulled me into a fascinating world - with some unbearably tense action scenes, vividly realised details of the past and the occasional gleam of contemporary resonance. It's beautifully written too. Some historical fiction gets laden down with details and bits of research the author couldn't bear not to tell us about. But Battle Song wears its learning lightly and is fleet of foot in navigating the past. You learn about the the baron's rebellion, about being a knight, about Simon de Montfort and more without realising. I can't wait to visit again!
