Morris came to Manderlay Colony to write, to share his truth, and create something literary. But on his last night in the quiet, small town, a series of events leave him trapped, with shrinking funds and no sure means of escape. As the hours and days pass, the beer bottles pile up on the bar counter, and as he confronts a man from his past, his sense of self is challenged. Jonathan Harper's debut novel is snarky, at times brutal, exploration of the modern man who stands at the mouth of a tunnel, knowing that what's inside will change him, and not always for the better.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A strange, original, surprising book, like a queer Kafka novel set in a mountain resort town of gingerbread houses, bad memories, and nightmares. Jonathan Harper writes nimbly, observes well, and imagines wildly. This is a terrific first novel." - Christopher Bram, Lambda Literary Award-winning author of Lives of the Circus Animals

"With You Don't Belong Here, Jonathan Harper has written a tight, tense novel that grabs you and doesn't let go. His lead character, a writer ending his residency in an artists' colony, finds himself trapped in an idyllic village which becomes decidedly less idyllic as he's stranded by his own self-sabotage and the treachery and manipulation of a shady cast of characters. Jonathan Harper has a fine eye for the damaged people who populate this village and this book, and sprinkles in enough dark humor to break the tension and give the reader an opportunity to breathe." - Rob Byrnes, Lambda Literary Award-winning author of When the Stars Come Out

"You Don't Belong Here reads like a Cheever fever dream-grim, literary, and domestically harrowing. As far as narratives of alcohol go, Harper's book is a chilling revision of The Lost Weekend for a modern era." - L.A. Fields, Lambda Literary Award finalist and author of Homo Superiors

"A claustrophobic novel about destructive friends and destructive urges." - Kirkus Reviews

"Jonathan Harper's You Don't Belong Here blends the finely wrought horror of a top-tier episode of the Twilight Zone with the observational deftness of Mary Gaitskill. This is a propulsive debut that I absolutely couldn't put down-and the absolute shocker of an ending haunted me for days afterward. Through a tale that is equally terrifying and seductive, Harper captures the highly specific pain of a life unlived with an unflinching eye and a sharp humor. " - Laura Bogart, author of Don't You Know I Love You

"You Don't Belong Here is a booze-soaked bender of a novel, a hauntological examination of second chances, a restless past, and an unlived future that unfolds with all the melancholy and drama of a memory play turned recurring nightmare." - Robert Levy, author of The Glittering World

Morris goes to a writing retreat to find an even keel. Instead he finds insular and increasingly sinister locals, each more willing than the last to watch him flail or help him unravel. He takes drink after drink to cope, then to forget, until ultimately the drink takes him to places he ought not to be.

A domestically harrowing read as each thread of one man's sanity frays, thins, and snaps one by one.

When I travel, I often fall in love with places I visit, sometimes enough to look up what jobs might exist there or the cost of apartments. What might my life look like here? Only after I’ve let the idea marinate for a little while do I remember that you are who you are wherever you go, and there are reasons perfect vacation towns stay small towns. It might, in fact, be a nightmare.

You Don’t Belong Here is an effective cautionary tale to keep in mind on future trips. The book centers on an east coast intellectual type stuck in a small but quaint Southern town after a figure from his past disrupts his plans and his sense of self. The “fish out of water” is a familiar set up, but here the social dynamics and behaviors subvert the usual expectations and stereotypes. Instead, the narrative explores what happens when one man drops out of his life to reckon with his past and chase the pleasures of the non-“real” life (or what might have happened if Alice lingered at the mad tea party after finding herself in Wonderland instead of looking for a way home).

I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book was. It was so good that I immediately re-read it upon completion. It was an evocative narrative that reminded me of the gritty poignancy of Bret Easton Ellis and the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

I had the opportunity to attend a reading for this book earlier this year. The author talked extensively about the idea of how hard it is, in a world of constant digital contact, to be truly disconnected, and the idea stuck with me for weeks before I started reading this book.

I love the way Harper explored this concept throughout the book, and especially the way it can feel both liberating and sinister in the same way that a small town can feel both charming and oppressive as you start to examine it more closely. Both feelings were captured perfectly here. I am looking forward to reading more by this author!

I wasn’t sure what to expect by the title and the summary of this book, but what a wild ride. I think it’s true we get stuck in places with unpleasant people or can see ourselves getting stuck during a brief visit to a time or place with a bad vibe. The car breaking down, a sudden illness, the theft of all money, cards, phone, and ID—what if you had to stay there?
The author takes the story another step further—what if you couldn’t leave? What if staying served a darker purpose?
This is a very well written angsty dark speculative novel with an underlying dread and despair. The main character’s trip to this weird town for a writing retreat is also punctuated by the unstable state of his homelife. An endlessly spiraling loop, very well plotted.
By the end of the story, I was shouting at the main character to go, go, go!
I highly recommend this off-beat novel from Lethe Press.

Jonathan Harper knocks it out of the park in You Don't Belong Here! If you want a book you can't put down and will keep you turning the pages until the end, look no further. Jonathan's storytelling is exceptional, and you will feel all of the emotions along with Morris as he writes his way to the end. I loved this book and think you will, too!
