'Essential reading in this day and age.' Bernardo Kastrup, philosopher, author of Why Materialism is Baloney

DisConnected offers a new vision of human nature and a new understanding of human behaviour and social problems. Connection is the most essential human trait - it determines our behaviour and our level of well-being. Cruelty is the result of a sense of disconnection, while “goodness” stems from connection. Unfortunately, the most disconnected people gravitate to positions of power, which leads to “pathocracy,” the most common form of government during the 20th century. Disconnected societies are patriarchal, hierarchical and warlike. Connected societies are egalitarian, democratic and peaceful. We can measure both social progress and personal development in terms of how far we move along a continuum of connection. At the most essential level, we are always interconnected. Altruism and spirituality are experiences of our fundamental connection. Regaining awareness of our connection is the only way by which we can live in harmony with ourselves, one another, and the world itself.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In his powerful new book, Steve Taylor sets out clearly how hyper-disconnected people are responsible for a large proportion of the brutality and suffering which has filled human history. He provides a stark warning that, in our time of ‘Strongmen’ leaders, hyper-disconnected people make the worst possible leaders in every conceivable way. In vividly demonstrating how protecting ourselves from such dangerous leaders is now the most urgent task facing humanity, DisConnected is essential reading in these frightening times. -- Ian Hughes, author of Disordered Minds: How Dangerous Personalities are Destroying Democracy

This may be the most important book you read this year. Documenting how increasingly sophisticated disinformation campaigns are fuelling the rise of pathocracy--literally rule by the disordered--Dr. Taylor explains why malignant narcissists are taking over the world in the 21st Century. -- John Gartner Ph.D., Founder, Duty To Warn

Dr. Steve Taylor is a creative psychological thinker who has consistently enlarged our understanding of human experience and its highest possibilities. I recommend his newest book, DisConnected, is a lively and important work on politics and leadership. I recommend it to all who are concerned with humanity's future in our increasingly connected world. -- Edward Hoffman Ph.D., author of Visions of Innocence and The Way of Splendour

The task of linking modern psychological insights, the character of human societies, and perennial spiritual wisdom is crucial. Continuing his contribution to this work, through the lens of connection and disconnection, Steve Taylor does us a great service. He will aid those who are confused about the nature of enlightenment, those who suffer because their lives are distorted by disconnection in themselves or those around them. He will also help others who perceive the fundamental connection that is our ground and seek to understand more, practically and experientially, about the depths and intimacies of our being. -- Dr. Mark Vernon, writer and psychotherapist

Not since Eric Hoffer’s post-war classic, The True Believer, have we been treated to such an insightful understanding of the roots of good and evil, summed up so simply and clearly. One need only look around the world today to grasp the power of this remarkable book. -- Allan Combs, The University of North Carolina and The California Institute of Integral Studies

This book is so good, I can highly recommend it! It gives a very good overall picture of the cause of human cruelty throughout history. I found it so helpful to understand in a very clear way how disconnection is the root of so much sorrow. Steve writes in such a clear and simple way that it's a joy to read. He basically connects all the dots that are needed to understand disconnection and connection. A profound book and highly recommended to anyone!

I am really loving this book. Thank you Steve Taylor for writing this powerful journey into many aspects that have been difficult to describe and impossible to accept. Understandable how connection can be the only answer.

This book is illuminating and explains authocrats and would be authocrats and perhaps what we can do to make sure they are never elected again.

I highly recommend this book, which is packed with psychological and spiritual insights about the causes of human destructiveness and how to create a loving world.

Taylor says that the ability to feel deeply connected with others is the source of harmony, well-being, and social progress. But some people—the hyper-disconnected--are so damaged that they cannot connect with others. As a result, they are self-centered, manipulative, and prone to cruelty.

Steve says that because hyper-disconnected people feel isolated, fragile, and inadequate, they are driven to seek power, wealth, and dominance over others. Their lack of concern about hurting people helps them rise to leadership positions in criminal organizations, corporate culture, and politics.

Steve Taylor names contemporary business leaders, politicians, and political movements as examples of hyper-disconnected pathology. Obviously, he cares more about truth-telling than about offending potential book buyers!

Although this book describes the tragic impact of human disconnectedness, it also makes the case that the natural human capacity for empathy, compassion, and altruism can save this troubled planet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Reviewed in the Netherlands on October 7, 2023
Unnecessarily controversial and tendentious for a book that in theory is about psychology. Just a few examples: “Right wings politicians may voice a desire to help their citizens…but in practice their policies always increase inequality” (p. 181); “Trump was psychologically unfit for the role of president” (p. 96); “privileged social environment can engender disconnection, creating a sense of superiority and entitlement” (p. 75); “Margaret Thatcher .. was a highly disconnected person who made political decisions without considering their human cost” (p. 211). The positive note is that is however so predictable in its exposition that can be read in full in almost one hour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un libro di alto livello che consente di rivisitare la Storia.
Reviewed in Italy on September 7, 2023
