Off a two-lane highway outside of a southern Tennessee town you’ve probably never heard of stands a hole-in-the-wall establishment called the Fat Cat Bar and Grille. Drinks are served by a woman named Charley, who seems to hear things a little too well and see things a little too clearly. She might listen to your life story, but she won’t tell you a single word of hers.

The other thing she won’t tell you? That you have wandered into the only shifter-friendly bar in the country…

In the three years since I was infected, I’ve finally managed to put my life back together. The bar is actually turning a profit. That bad breakup is totally behind me. And as Marshal, I now run the northern zone of the Mississippi Valley Pride.

So when two fierce, gorgeous strangers accuse one of my regulars of killing a human woman—a charge he vehemently denies—I’m determined to get to the truth. With the victim’s brother in search of justice, the widower demanding brutal vengeance, and the fate of the entire “stray” Pride resting on the outcome of this case, I can’t afford to make a mistake.

But then my investigation unearths a shocking connection to a killer I put in the ground years ago, and I realize the cards were stacked against me before this game even began…

A resident of Oklahoma, Rachel Vincent has a BA in English and an overactive imagination, and consistently finds the latter to be more practical. She shares her workspace with two black cats (Kaci and Nyx) and her # 1 fan. Rachel is older than she looks-seriously-and younger than she feels, but remains convinced that for every day she spends writing, one more day will be added to her lifespan.

I’ve loved every one of Mrs. Vincent’s books since being introduced to them some time ago. Worth the read. Her writing definitely transports you to the world. Ignites something inside you and just makes you relate with something otherwise unrelatable.

I'm so glad the author decided to return to this world she created. I picked up, by chance, Stray back in 2007 and she has been a favorite author since. The characters drew you into the story and with its many plot twists and mysteries it was a great read. Can't waite for the next one!

I read Rachel Vincent’s Shifter series when it first came out years ago and fell in love with it. The family dynamics of the shifter books really hit home for me and it’s a series that I have often reread. When Rachel Vincent announced she was writing a new shifter series set in the same universe, (and we would even get some cameos!!) I was thrilled. I immediately pre-ordered Fat Cat and counted down the days. Well, the day finally arrived and holy moly, did Rachel out do herself. I devoured Fat Cat in four days. This book was like a big warm hug from a family member.

Charley is such a kick butt character, she reminds of Faythe, in that she doesn’t take crap from any of the male shifters. She stands on her own four paws and gets the job done. The family dynamic is still there, both blood family, and found family. You get to see, some of the old crew! (I won’t say who, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone) The plot was well done, but I expected nothing less considering the author, and the character building was top-notch, as always. This is the first book in a new series, and it will continue to follow Charley, which I’m super happy about. If you liked the original Shifter Series, then you’ll love this. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next in the Fat Cat series!

Everything about the book was awesome. I love that the fmc was strong but also flawed. She felt real and believable. I also loved the developing relationships. I don’t want to give any spoilers, just that the storylines felt natural. Even though there’s still backstory that we don’t know, it didn’t feel like we were being strung along. The story stood on its own with the backstory as support.

Definitely worth reading. I hope there’s more in the series soon. I would love to see what happens next. But, this book was so good and complete on its own that I don’t feel like it’s missing anything which is often how I feel after I’ve started a series.

I'm so happy Vincent decided there were more stories to tell in the Shifters universe. Having re-read the main series and the spin-offs, it was wonderful to dive back into this world and have a fresh and brand-new story. If you haven't read the OG series and even the spin-off Wildcats trilogy, you may be able to follow along with this story, but you'll probably end up more confused than anything. It benefits having read Vincent's earlier works. I mention that in case anyone is wondering if they can pick this book up and dive blindly into the Shifter's world.

That said, this story was everything and more. I love that we have a new female MC, AND she's a stray! I love that there wasn't too much werecat politics in this book. Aside from a few cameos and name-drops, this story stands well all on its own. (The reason I mentioned you might be confused when reading was not because of the name drops and cameos, but because of the werecat world in general). I did find it refreshing that everyone wasn't referring to each other as toms and tabbies, probably because they were all born strays and not natural-born cats.

I also love having Charley's sister be human and in the know. And the shifter-friendly bar was a great setting.

Because of how it ended, I hope Vincent continues with these characters in the future or has them be mentioned in other spin-off works, should she choose to write more in this universe. As it stands, it did end perfectly and can be read as a stand-alone, but it also ended in a way that we could potentially see more of this story from Davey's POV. I'd be interested in that and hearing how Faythe's new project works out.

Overall, I am happy with this story, and it's just another reason why Vincent is my favourite author. Everything she writes is an auto-buy for me.

I have so missed the shifter world Rachel created and was not disappointed by this return to this wonderful world. Hopefully we will continue to have more adventures in this beautiful world.

Happy to see Rachel Vincent dip her pen back into the world of werecats. Found family, relatable characters that you can care about, a mystery to solve, and an easy read. Really hoping this becomes a series!!

Charley is a big cat shifter and is the acting Marshall of a region over all the shifters that live in that region. She also owns the only shifter bar is that area with her sister who's human. Human woman are dying after getting stretched or bitten and she's been called in by the big boss to find the shifter doing it. A recent death of a shifters wife and the girls brother also a shifter are looking for answers too. I had huge problem that Charley gets drunk along with the fresh grieving widower and they get it on several times. You know how grief will do that! Nope, I dont. Her sister goes missing after admitting falling for Charles second where she tells him to leave blah blah. Sister gets kidnapped ( didn't see that coming from the beginning right)? And the chase is on. I'm out.

4.0 out of 5 stars New UF series in the „Shifters“ world
Reviewed in Germany on October 2, 2023
I haven’t read the original UF series (yet. I will probably remedy that), which Rachel Vincent started in 2007 as far as I know. But since this is a new series in the same supernatural world, I didn’t need to to get into it smoothly. Charley is one of the few female strays (that is bitten, not born shifter) and also one of the Pride‘s alpha’s Marshals to rule in his stead and lay down the law down in southern Tennessee . She also owns one of the coolest bars ever, the shifter-friendly „Fat Cat“. The trouble starts when one of her werecat regulars is accused of murder by the husband and the brother of the victim, both shifters as well, but pretty unaccustomed to the law of the shifters. Charley has to investigate the crime, which turns out to be a lot more than a single gruesome murder, and to keep the two newbies in check.

As I said, I didn’t know the world, but it was well rounded and I kind of eased into it alongside the newbies. It also delivered a cool background for the murder mystery, which was my highlight, because of a lot of unexpected twists and turns. Every time I thought I knew what was happening, everything was just turned upside down. Kept me glued to the pages. I also liked Charley and most of the secondary characters a lot, with the exception of the somewhat „love“-interest (although I hesitate to call that love, it’s not and I really don’t see the allure except the physical). Let’s see how that pans out - if there is a next installment, which I actually expect: the episode is finished, but there’s room for more action and adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the world of the shifter series, impossibly brilliant.

My favourite book series was the shifter ones, followed of course by the wild cats books, and now Rachel Vincent takes us back to that world and it doesn't disappoint. We meet new characters and old friends whilst the seemingly effortless writing style ,world building and plot line flow into a brilliant exciting new story. Can't recommend these books enough.Old fans will love another chance to explore this world while new ones can easily fall into this story without having read any of the previous titles, though I'll bet you'll want to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fat Cat book review
Reviewed in Australia on May 11, 2023
It’s an kindle book so I read it for one and it was so good, Rachel Vincent definitely knows what she’s doing and I’ve read the Shifters books of hers from the time I was about 17, the books first released so when she takes us back to this world with a book, I am always very much excited. But I do recommend reading both previous series even though this is a new spin off because old characters do make appearances and some of the information/events could be confusing if you don’t first know how it is formed. But this is a buy you won’t regret at all.

Another great contribution to the Shifter World! Time to meet some new characters as well as old. If you haven’t read the other books in this series, I would highly recommend doing so before reading this book, but this could be read as a stand alone. I especially liked the way this book introduces a new twist, and very much hope this opens up a whole new wave of Shifter books!

I love the original Shifters series. I cannot say how many times I have read the whole series. When I heard that Rachel was headed back to the Shifters I was so pleased. And this book delivered. I loved this book. Charley, Davey and all the guys are amazing characters. I so hope that this is the first in a new series of books. The new characters just fit right into the Shifter world. Along with seeing some old favourites as well this is one really really great book. Welcome back Shifters
