A Unicorn Named Sparkle: A Picture Book (A Unicorn Named Sparkle, 1) Hardcover – Picture Book, July 5, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
When Lucy sees an ad in the newspaper for a unicorn, she sends in her twenty-five cents and waits four to six long weeks for her very own unicorn to arrive. She imagines the flowers that she'll braid into his beautiful pink mane, and she even picks the perfect name for him: Sparkle. But when Sparkle arrives, his ears are too long, his horn is too short, he smells funny--and oh, he has fleas. Lucy isn't pleased, but in the end she warms up to Sparkle and realizes that even though he wasn't exactly the unicorn she wanted, he might be just the one she needs.

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Review
"The pencil, pen, and watercolor illustrations, done in a simple, loose style, offer expressive, playful character poses. And Young hits all the visual beats, creating something likable and appealing...A tale about coming to love someone―or something―for who they are and not what one hopes them to be: a pleasant addition to the odd-couple shelf." ―Kirkus
“She had to admit: sometimes he made her smile and sometimes he made her laugh,” writes Young (Don’t Eat the Baby!), whose storytelling and watercolor cartooning are spot-on in their comic timing. Her message to readers is clear: self-awareness and finding a soul mate don’t always come easily." ―Publishers Weekly

Book Review - A Unicorn Named Sparkle
The Produce Nerd
About the author
Amy Young has written and illustrated many picture books for children; she has also illustrated books by other authors. Her most recent series, A Unicorn Named Sparkle, includes five books about a spunky unicorn who looks a lot like a goat. A Unicorn Named Sparkle was featured in the School Library Journal list of "June 2016 Popular Picks," and was also chosen as “Amazon July Best Books of the Month.” The most exotic form of recognition came in 2014, when Amy was invited to China to speak to educators about children’s literacy issues, and to meet with parents, children and literacy groups to discuss her popular Belinda the Ballerina series (which remains wildly popular in China).
Amy trained as a fine artist at Yale and received an MFA in painting from Indiana University. When she is not writing or illustrating, Amy plays the Irish fiddle, reads, and spends time with her charming husband and lovely friends. She also spends a fair amount of time trying to convince people that Sparkle is a unicorn, not a goat.
