Resurrecting Pompeii provides an in-depth study of a unique site from antiquity with information about a population who all died from the same known cause within a short period of time.

Pompeii has been continuously excavated and studied since 1748. Early scholars working in Pompeii and other sites associated with the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius were seduced by the wealth of artefacts and wall paintings yielded by the site. This meant that the less visually attractive evidence, such as human skeletal remains, were largely ignored.

Recognizing the important contribution of the human skeletal evidence to the archaeology of Pompeii, Resurrecting Pompeii remedies that misdemeanour, and provides students of archaeology and history with an essential resource in the study of this fascinating historical event.

Review

'Resurrecting Pompeii is a remarkable book' – Times Literary Supplement

'Those who have been lucky enough to hear Estelle lecture will not be surprised by the clarity and pervading logic of her narrative, nor by the touches of quirky humour that emerge. From the first page the tone is a ‘double whammy’, both engaging and scholarly.' Dennis Mootz, NSW History Teacher's Association, Australia

Throughout the years, I have read books and articles on Pompeii.
However I have never read about the skeletons or casts in detail
from Pompeii so I was interested in this book. The author gives
the history behind the finding of Pompeii, excavations of the site,
and the treatment of the casts & skeletons from 18th, 19th, and
into the 21st century. Also the influence of The Last Days of
Pompeii on the site and its victims. Some has terms dealing with
the different parts of the skeleton as they try to age/determine sex/
and if they had any diseases at time of death Also includes the site
of Herculaneum and its skeletons as well. However it cuts off at the first
page of the glossary, but it's a must read for any people who love to read
about the 79 A.D. eruption. To the author, I enjoyed it. Thank you.

Resurrecting Pompeii is a great book for anyone who is studying Pompeii. It is a thorough examination of the site and the skeletons which Estelle Lazar discusses in relation to the period. She investigates many aspects including measurements, climatic conditions, soils analysis, historical connections and cultural features just to name a few. It is not only a technical study but a very interesting look at the peoples and cultures that inhabited and affected life in Pompeii.

A study of the victims of the 79 AD disaster based on the skeletal remains
excavated over the years in attempt to determine health living conditions
and whether the victim's Physical condition was a possible contributor to
death by hindering the possibility of escape, this is an extremely interesting
    book

This excellent book describes a study of the lessons that can be learned from the skeletons that have been excavated at pompeii. It shows that many stereotyped assumptions about the kind of people who did not escape were wrong. The author also provides enough information to allow lay readers to understand the scientific techniques that were used.
