AN EDGAR AWARD NOMINEE

In 1958, a small Minnesota town is rocked by a shocking murder, pouring fresh fuel on old grievances in this dazzling novel, an instant New York Times bestseller and “a work of art” (The Denver Post).

On Memorial Day in Jewel, Minnesota, the body of wealthy landowner Jimmy Quinn is found floating in the Alabaster River, dead from a shotgun blast. The investigation falls to Sheriff Brody Dern, a highly decorated war hero who still carries the physical and emotional scars from his military service. Even before Dern has the results of the autopsy, vicious rumors begin to circulate that the killer must be Noah Bluestone, a Native American WWII veteran who has recently returned to Jewel with a Japanese wife. As suspicions and accusations mount and the town teeters on the edge of more violence, Dern struggles not only to find the truth of Quinn’s murder but also put to rest the demons from his own past.

Caught up in the torrent of anger that sweeps through Jewel are a war widow and her adolescent son, the intrepid publisher of the local newspaper, an aging deputy, and a crusading female lawyer, all of whom struggle with their own tragic histories and harbor secrets that Quinn’s death threatens to expose.

Both a complex, spellbinding mystery and a masterful portrait of mid-century American life that is “a novel to cherish” (
Star Tribune, Minneapolis), The River We Remember offers an unflinching look at the wounds left by the wars we fight abroad and at home, a moving exploration of the ways in which we seek to heal, and a testament to the enduring power of the stories we tell about the places we call home.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“[Krueger] is a fine storyteller, but it is his understanding of his characters and his sense of the past that make The River We Remember more than just a story. As novels go, this one is a work of art.”—The Denver Post

The River We Remember may be [Krueger's] magnum opus…deeply movingintimate and epic in equal measure.” —Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

“William Kent Krueger’s page-turning, rewarding mystery
The River We Remember is a superb exploration of the prejudices and complexities of post-World War II America.” —Bookpage (starred review)

“Absorbing. . . combines nostalgic settings with depictions of the lingering hardships and traumas of war and the home front . . . in the decade after WWII.” —
Booklist (starred review)

“Tender, evocative.” —
Shelf Awareness

“Krueger’s graceful prose coupled with his ability to delve deep into his characters’ inner lives makes
The River We Remember a stand-out in a career of excellent novels…[The novel] ebbs and flows to a stunning ending that also is life affirming. This is a story not easily forgotten.” —Sun Sentinel

“Irresistible…Book clubs, here’s your next pick. Find
The River We Remember, take it home and shut the door.” —Macro Eagle

“Historical fiction that resonates with our time makes for a great reading experience—especially when it’s done in the literary style of rich, careful language; realistic evocation of place; and deep exploration into character. William Kent Krueger has delivered just this combination in his latest standalone novel,
The River We Remember.” —New York Journal of Books

Dark Times in a 1950’s Small Town
3.5 stars rounded up for The River We Remember by William Kent KruegerIn The River We Remember, William Kent Krueger successfully creates memorable characters and a vivid portrait of life in the late 1950’s in a small Minnesota town. I didn’t love the story, though, because the main character is too flawed to be any sort of hero, and there is an overwhelming amount of sadness and darkness. It’s a stark contrast to the Happy Days image of the 50’s that I grew up with, and though the lingering psychological and physical effects from WWII and the Korean War are believable, it still seems improbable that everyone among the vast list of characters would have traumatic backstories. And if the novel itself isn’t sad enough to depress you, the epilogue will definitely do the trick. Some readers will love Krueger’s picturesque writing and storytelling, but this one’s just not for me.

I have read almost every one of William Kent Krueger’s novels and this one blew me away. I cannot recommend this book enough. Writing with such humanity, compassion and a deep understanding of human nature, Krueger weaves an incredibly moving tale of struggle, devastation, friendship, strength and hope. This beautiful story, the remarkable characters, and the many lessons it offers will stay with readers long after the last page is turned.. Thank you Mr. Krueger!

I love this author. His characters are so beloved yet flawed. His grasp of small town life and its good and bad are so well depicted. I also loved This Tender Land.

It took me quite a while to get into the story but about a third of the way through it finally grabbed me. I read it for my book club or I wouldn’t have chosen it. Well written, complicated, lots of different characters that, at times, were difficult to keep track of. Very sad.

I read a lot and enjoy them all, many by this author, but this was a fabulous and epic story. The characters all touch you deeply. The story moves along at a very fast pace and when your done you want to cry but don’t. Just saver this epic story, the wonderful people of this fictional town. Yes there is darkness in the story also but William Kent Kruger is a gifted story teller and I’m sure you’ll come away, as I did, with a need for more beautiful stories like this one. Thank you Mr. Krueger.

One of my friends who is a voracious reader recommended this book to me and I owe her. The fact that I grew up in a rural area near the era in which the plot is set enriched it for me, that frame of reference isn't necessary. The books starts a bit slowly and builds momentum in a wonderful way. When you first start reading it you don't expect a page turner, but that is exactly what it is. There are many characters but I had no problem tracking them all and understanding the intersection of their stories. The character development makes you care for even the flawed character--and you'll be reminded that none of us is perfect when you find out the backstory about each. I loved the ending, and if I am ever disappointed in a novel, a bad ending is often the case. You can read to be entertained but you will also have the chance to think about human nature, mistakes and redemption. For me this is one of the best novels I've ever read.

The River We Remember is a phenomenal mystery novel. Krueger creates a myriad of dynamic characters whose interactions are fascinating if not entirely desirable. The reader celebrates and mourns with them and admires the complexity of the author's story.

Jimmy Quinn
