Grace Callaway gives us a terrific age-gap romance in book 4 of her Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels series and Glory & The Master of Shadows is a wonderful action packed adventure. A sexy romance and somewhat of a slow burn by Callaway's standards, Lady Glory Cavendish proves to be an intrepid and independent lady and she completely captures the heart of the austere Chinese Kung Fu master, Wei Chen, a dozen years her senior who happens to be in London seeking the murderers of his family.
I highly recommend reading this series in order. Although this can stand alone, you'd miss the three years Mr Chen has been a stalwart supporter of the ladies' investigative work -- especially since he is a good friend of the hero from book one, The Duke of Hadleigh. First time readers to the series might think that Chen's interest in glory comes out of the blue, when it definitely does not.
Can we TALK about how wonderful it is to have an Asian hero? Kudos to Ms. Callaway for creating such an honorable, sexy man. She said she patterned Wei after the Cantonese dramas she grew up watching and I think Wei is marvelous. (And smart enough to not let Glory go). I enjoy an age Gap romances when the author doesn't make a big deal about the difference in their ages or make the characters maunder about it. Chen admires Glory's bright personality and thirst for life but doesn't worry over her relative youth.
Glory. What a great heroine. I encourage you to read Enter The Duke for the full backstory on her parents. Glory feels like she doesn't quite fit in. To avoid scandal the duke, her half-Chinese biological father, never acknowledged her as his real daughter. Instead, he adopted her when he married her mother when Glory was 9 yrs old. But Glory bears a strong resemblance to her father and I'd have thought maybe things might have been ok the other way. Approaching her 21st birthday, she feels like an outsider in more ways than one since her fellow investigators are all married and starting families. I empathize with Glory.
Because of Glory's curiosity about her Chinese heritage, she's initially somewhat in awe of Wei Chen's ability but she quickly realizes how her physical reactions to him indicate she is attracted to him. Soon she is helping find the Englishmen responsible for his family's murder when their seemingly simple dog knapping case turns more complicated. Wei accepts her help. And he gives in to her request to teach her kung fu.
This book is plenty sexy despite that late full love scene. (Wei Chen is master of a lot more than kung fu let's just say. And Glory is an eager pupil.)
Told in 3rd person with POV pretty evenly split between Wei & Glory, this is a great romance with a great HEA. 5 HUGE stars.

🎭Glory and the Master of Shadows 👤Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels Book 4✒️ Grace Callaway🌟🌟🌟⭐️Finally I have been able to secure an arc by the author.I confess I usually discover new-to-me authors via a free or discounted edition or an arc, but I do not know about the setting of her books’ promotions but like any Avon’s sale, they never work for me as a non North America resident.So even if this arc is probably close to the end of the series, I could not let it pass.I am a sucker for class differences romances, and here Glory and Wei could not have been more opposite. Even if I am not sure how she could be a lady as until quite late in the century there was no real law about adoption.Still, even as the “step-daughter” of a Duke, she was well above a mere fighter / healer, even more a foreigner.But what I liked the most was the foray into a different culture, and while revenge is revenge and tends to come with a price or at someone’s cost, it was intriguing to learn about a different culture.Glory and Wei pairing is one of complementarity, she is impulsive, he is patient, she runs into things when he thinks things over, she is restless, he is quiet.After for all his talk of celibacy, unworthiness and difference of age, he did not resist much the siren tempting him when he was able to stay celibate for close to a decade and a half.I just felt like something was missing at time, is it because I have not read the other books, but I did not grasp when did their feelings moved from occasional teammates to in love partners. I felt like it was in part more lust than real love or very sudden.
