The kingdom teeters on a knife edge, and one man would throw it into chaos...

Autumn, 1379. The power of the crown is invested in John of Gaunt, and the kingdom is seething with discontent. The French are attacking the southern ports and the peasants are planning a revolt organised by a mysterious leader who proclaims himself as 'IRA DEI', the anger of God.

When Gaunt's plans to win over the merchant princes of London are plunged into chaos by a series of bloody murders, he turns to Sir John Cranston to bring the assassin to book and to recover a king's ransom in gold which has disappeared.

Cranston naturally calls on his ally Brother Athelstan. London is a hotbed of intrigue and they find it difficult to distinguish between friend and foe. They must face deadly threats not just from the powerful elite, but from the seedy underworld of medieval London.

The fourth instalment in the gripping historical mystery series, perfect for fans of C. J. Sansom, S. J. Parris and Susanna Gregory.

....not in girth, he already has that, but as a character. You see him react to the death of a dear friend in a very poignant way. His true soft spot for both man and beast shines through...a good read with more character to hold on to.

This is one of a series of great Medieval mysteries (set around the time of the late 1300's in London) by Paul Doherty, aka Paul Harding. In this series our protagonists are a Priestly Friar named Brother Athelstan, and that Falstaffian great Sir John Cranston, who is the Coroner of London.

The two are greatly different- Athelstan is thin, studious, and abstinent, while Sir John is fat and a notorious imbiber (An early Nero Wolfe perhaps?). But they are united by a love of justice and a nose for a mystery. In some ways they have a Holmes-Watson relationship, but Sir John is no dummy, he has a sharp mind hidden under that flagon of ale.

What makes this series great is the relationship between the two characters, and the cast of fools, villains and knaves that they encounter. Also well done is the setting- London in the 1380's is no garden spot, there is great suffering. The series is very realistic here.

Those who like historical mysteries should try one of the books in this series

I am not the most objective of reviewers when it comes to the Brother Athelstan series. Doherty writes wells and his plots are ingenious. They entail more than one mystery and the multiple mysteries do not trip over each other. You will learn great amounts of everyday detail about English urban life and Doherty's writing paints vivid pictures of London,Westminster and Southwark. If you want to know about the life of ordinary people in addition to the rich and famous you should tap this series. It is superb!

Tthis series has been going a long time, and these older books are hard to find - no where in North Carolina librairies at any rate. The two main characters play off each other very well and provide an interesting contrast in social station and abilities. The political situation at the time is well described and adds richness to the plot. I recommend the whole series of Brother Athelstan.

This is the fourth book in the Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan series. This novel combined with the early books in the Hugh Corbett series is one of Paul Doherty's earlier offerings and he has since written many more books and is now an established author of medieval novels and has also added a number of novels on Egypt to his ever growing list of titles. Having said that it is one of his earlier offerings does not mean that it is inferior to his current books, quite the opposite. The Hugh Corbett mysteries were and are extremely popular and Paul Doherty has found another winner with the Brother Athelstan series.

The year is 1379, England is a seething mass of discontent. John of Gaunt has the English crown and the English are less than happy with this hard and domineering man who has grabbed at the opportunity to rule as Regent. So much so that the peasants are planning a revolt. The revolt is being organised through a network of go betweens and Brother Athelstan is worried that some of his parishioners may have been ill advised and secretly joined those who wish to bring John of Gaunt down.

When some of Gaunt's plans are foiled by a series of murders the Regent is incensed and calls on the services of Sir John Cranston and his friend and secretary Brother Athelstan to assist in solving the crimes.

Another outstanding book by the Great Historic Mystery Author Paul Doherty. As a Benedictine monk, I really appreciate the accuracy of this series, and the twists and turns. Highly recommended to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Glorious Brother Athelstan Winner!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 28, 2021
Read this book in 2010, and its the 4th volume of the amazing "Brother Athelstan" series.

This tale is set in the Autumn of the year AD 1379, and power of the English crown is infested in John of Gaunt, uncle of the future King Richard II, and the kingdom seething with discontent.

Problems are rising all over the country, and especially a revolt is about to be organized with as their leader a man who's calling himself, "IRA DEI", the Anger of God.

Meanwhile London is rife with bloody murders, ruining John of Gaunt's plans for himself and the realm.

In desperation John of Gaunt turns to Sir John Cranston to restore order in London, to catch the killer and recover the vanished king's ransom in gold.

Together with his friend and ally, Brother Athelstan, they must face threats from all sides, from the upper classes as well as the seedy underworld.

In this dangerous environment of mayhem and murder they will get to the bottom of this case, and after some twists and turns, followed by a well executed plot, they will be able to identify the culprit and bring him to justice.

Highly recommended, for this is a captivating addition to this fantastic series, and that's why I like to call this episode: "A Glorious Brother Athelstan Winner"!
