Purchase options and add-ons
The kingdom teeters on a knife edge, and one man would throw it into chaos...
Autumn, 1379. The power of the crown is invested in John of Gaunt, and the kingdom is seething with discontent. The French are attacking the southern ports and the peasants are planning a revolt organised by a mysterious leader who proclaims himself as 'IRA DEI', the anger of God.
When Gaunt's plans to win over the merchant princes of London are plunged into chaos by a series of bloody murders, he turns to Sir John Cranston to bring the assassin to book and to recover a king's ransom in gold which has disappeared.
Cranston naturally calls on his ally Brother Athelstan. London is a hotbed of intrigue and they find it difficult to distinguish between friend and foe. They must face deadly threats not just from the powerful elite, but from the seedy underworld of medieval London.
The fourth instalment in the gripping historical mystery series, perfect for fans of C. J. Sansom, S. J. Parris and Susanna Gregory.

Dr. Paul Doherty was born in Middlesbrough (North-East England) in 1946. After A-levels, he went to Ushaw College in Durham for three years to study for the Catholic priesthood. In 1967, he was admitted to Liverpool University where he gained a First Class Honours Degree in History and won a state scholarship to Exeter College, Oxford. While there he met his wife Carla Lynn Corbitt. He continued his studies but decided that the academic world was not for him and became a secondary school teacher.
Paul worked in Ascot, Newark and Crawley, before being appointed as Headmaster to Trinity Catholic High School, Woodford Green, Essex, in September 1981. Trinity is a large comprehensive (1700 on roll) which teaches the full ability range, ages 11-18. The school has been described as one of the leading comprehensives in the U.K. and has been awarded “Outstanding” in four consecutive OFSTED inspections. All seven of Paul and Carla’s children have been educated at Trinity.
Paul’s other incarnation is as a novelist. He finished his doctorate on the reign of Edward II of England and decided to start writing about the “undergrowth of history”, beginning with THE DEATH OF A KING, published in 1985. Since then, Paul has written over 100 books and has published a series of outstanding historical mysteries set in the Middle Ages, Classical Greece, Ancient Egypt and elsewhere. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages and are available in several formats, including large print, audio books, and more recently e-books.
He has been published under several pseudonyms: C. L. Grace, Paul Harding, Michael Clynes, Ann Dukthas and Anna Apostolou, but now writes only under his own name. Paul has also written a number of non-fiction titles, among them: ISABELLA AND THE STRANGE DEATH OF EDWARD II, a scholarly study of The Great Crown Jewels Robbery of 1303, THE SECRET LIFE OF ELIZABETH I, and a study of the mystery surrounding the death of Alexander the Great.
Paul lectures for a number of organisations, particularly on historical mysteries, many of which later feature in his writings. A born speaker and trained lecturer Paul loves to tell stories and “bring history to life.”

The two are greatly different- Athelstan is thin, studious, and abstinent, while Sir John is fat and a notorious imbiber (An early Nero Wolfe perhaps?). But they are united by a love of justice and a nose for a mystery. In some ways they have a Holmes-Watson relationship, but Sir John is no dummy, he has a sharp mind hidden under that flagon of ale.
What makes this series great is the relationship between the two characters, and the cast of fools, villains and knaves that they encounter. Also well done is the setting- London in the 1380's is no garden spot, there is great suffering. The series is very realistic here.
Those who like historical mysteries should try one of the books in this series
The year is 1379, England is a seething mass of discontent. John of Gaunt has the English crown and the English are less than happy with this hard and domineering man who has grabbed at the opportunity to rule as Regent. So much so that the peasants are planning a revolt. The revolt is being organised through a network of go betweens and Brother Athelstan is worried that some of his parishioners may have been ill advised and secretly joined those who wish to bring John of Gaunt down.
When some of Gaunt's plans are foiled by a series of murders the Regent is incensed and calls on the services of Sir John Cranston and his friend and secretary Brother Athelstan to assist in solving the crimes.

This tale is set in the Autumn of the year AD 1379, and power of the English crown is infested in John of Gaunt, uncle of the future King Richard II, and the kingdom seething with discontent.
Problems are rising all over the country, and especially a revolt is about to be organized with as their leader a man who's calling himself, "IRA DEI", the Anger of God.
Meanwhile London is rife with bloody murders, ruining John of Gaunt's plans for himself and the realm.
In desperation John of Gaunt turns to Sir John Cranston to restore order in London, to catch the killer and recover the vanished king's ransom in gold.
Together with his friend and ally, Brother Athelstan, they must face threats from all sides, from the upper classes as well as the seedy underworld.
In this dangerous environment of mayhem and murder they will get to the bottom of this case, and after some twists and turns, followed by a well executed plot, they will be able to identify the culprit and bring him to justice.
Highly recommended, for this is a captivating addition to this fantastic series, and that's why I like to call this episode: "A Glorious Brother Athelstan Winner"!
Several crimes are solved in this particular saga with coroner Cranston , Athelstan s friend and part time employer in his roll as clerk to the coroner.trcking down treason and murder in a dangerous period of English history leading to the peasants revolt.
No doubt book 5 will bring us even closer to this turbulent time in the history of our country
