Penelope - Tudor Baroness (The Elizabethan Series Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 649 ratings

A Life of Love and Scandal

Lady Penelope is one of the most beautiful and sought-after women in Elizabethan England. Daughter of the queen's nemesis, Lady Lettice Knollys, Countess of Essex, she becomes the stepdaughter of Robert Dudley when he marries her mother in secret.

Penelope's life is full of love and scandal. The inspiration for Sir Philip Sidney’s sonnet Astrophel and Stella, she is inevitably caught up in her brother Robert's fateful rebellion.

A complex and fascinating woman, her life is a story of love, betrayal, and tragedy. Discover how Penelope charms her way out of serious charges of treason, adultery, and forgery, and becomes one of the last truly great ladies of the Tudor court.

A maid of honour to Queen Elizabeth, Penelope outlives the end of the Tudors with the death of the old queen and the arrival of King James, becoming a favourite lady-in-waiting to the new queen, Anne of Denmark.

“This is the story of a woman who lived life on her own terms, and one that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.”

"A must-read for anyone who loves Tudor history.
Penelope – Tudor Baroness captures the energy, determination and, on occasions, frustrations of this very real woman. Despite the limitations placed upon her, Penelope lived her life to the full and Tony Riches has captured her spirit, warmth and defiance perfectly. I loved it." Bestselling Author Alexandra Walsh

Tony Riches, as usual, writes compellingly about the complicated and often turbulent lives of the English aristocracy. drama, lives of real women bound to a system of living and inheritance that is often unfair and fragile.

Thoroughly enjoyed ‘Penelope’,
a true historical novel. I frequently
googled the facts and was astounded with the accuracy; enjoyed learning the relationships and came to love this family, even with their flaws. From beginning to end ‘Penelope’ held my interest. Tony Riches is easily one of my favorite historical authors!

This novel deals with a woman’s life inside the royal circle and the perils that went with it. Not a happy story as Elizabeth 1 was mercurial and the closer the relationship the more it was dangerous

Penelope's book is the last of the Elizabethan series and shows how women could be treated as chess pieces for the betterment of the family position. She is a strong character and negotiates for more freedom.

One rarely finds novels from the points of view of leading Elizabethan women. This was a delightful, and insightful, read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story as excellent as its lovely cover

Tony Riches really knows his history but can also weave a wonderful, gripping story within the authentic atmosphere. He's done this with Penelope to create such a compelling portrait of a fascinating woman and an utterly satisfying read. I love his covers - a brilliant combination of real Tudor portraiture but with a slight lemon twist of modernity that makes them irresistible. Bravo

I downloaded a sample to taste it and then couldn't stop reading it. I finished it in one delicious sitting. He is very good at weaving in Tudor history while telling a really good story. The atmosphere of the late Elizabethan court is well done. Penelope is a really interesting character. I've always wanted to know about her. My only reservation about the character depicted here is that she thinks a bit too like a modern, liberated woman, but that's a minor quibble in a very enjoyable novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable

A very enjoyable read. I couldn't put this down. We all know that lady Penelope's great grandfather was, in all likelihood, King Henry VIII, as a result of a relationship he had with her great grandmother Mary Boleyn aka Mary Carey / Stafford. Lady Penelope, therefore was Elizabeth I 's great neice, and that heady mix of Boleyn and Tudor, is seen in Lady Penelope , a strong and intelligent woman. It's good to read about the other players in the Tudor courts , it gives a different perspective, as historical novels tend to be told from the perspective of the king and or queen/ princess or Prince.
