Academy Award–nominated actor Richard E. Grant’s “genuine and compelling” (The New York Times), “moving and entertaining” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) memoir about finding happiness in even the darkest of days.

Richard E. Grant emigrated from Swaziland to London in 1982, with dreams of making it as an actor. Unexpectedly, he met and fell in love with a renowned dialect coach Joan Washington. Their relationship and marriage, navigating the highs and lows of Hollywood, parenthood, and loss, lasted almost forty years. When Joan died in 2021, her final challenge to him was to find a “pocketful of happiness in every day.”

This honest and frequently hilarious memoir is written in honor of that challenge—Richard has faithfully kept a diary since childhood, and in these entries, he shares raw details of everything he has experienced: both the pain of losing his beloved wife and the excitement of their life together, from the role that transformed his life overnight in
Withnail and I to his thrilling Oscar Award nomination thirty years later for Can You Ever Forgive Me?.

In “one of the bravest, strongest, funniest memoirs I’ve ever read” (Bonnie Garmus,
New York Times bestselling author of Lessons in Chemistry), A Pocketful of Happiness is a powerful, funny, and moving celebration of life’s unexpected joys.

Pocketful of Happiness

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Richard E. Grant is a wonderful actor and, it seems, a rather wonderful (goofy, talented, loving) man. His new memoir, written in diary form, is about his terrific 38-year marriage-of-opposites to Joan Washington (he the eternal adolescent, star-struck optimist and gifted actor, she a sharp-tongued, no-nonsense and equally gifted dialect coach)… Genuine and compelling.”
THE NEW YORK TIMES

“His decision to form the book’s narrative jointly out of the most enchanting highs (the Oscars, karaoke with Olivia Colman in a house formerly owned by Bette Davis) and the bleakest lows (Joan’s diagnosis, her fury when Grant inadvertently used the word terminal one day to describe her illness) came, he said, out of his desire to accurately capture what most people’s lives are like… [Richard and Joan’s] relationship is the fascinating central pillar of the book.”
THE ATLANTIC

“The term soulmate’ gets thrown around with abandon, often in the throes of young lust, long before love is tested by time, financial hardship, or even illness. But when Richard E. Grant calls his late wife Joan Washington his ‘soulmate’ in his new memoir A Pocketful of Happiness, it almost seems an understatement… The Oscar-nominated British actor writes tenderly, heart on his sleeve.”

—USA TODAY

“One of the bravest, strongest, funniest memoirs I’ve ever read.”
—BONNIE GARMUS, New York Times bestselling author of Lessons in Chemistry

"Actor Grant delivers an excellent memoir that’s part journal, part love letter to his late wife, Joan Washington. Grant’s tender recollections effectively conjure on the page the couple’s enduring connection. The result is a moving and entertaining celebration of life and love."
—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review)

“Grant’s prose is charming and witty... An engaging story of life, love, and grief that will resonate with anyone who has ever loved and lost.”
BOOKLIST

“A diary-keeper since childhood, the author draws on his candid entries to weave together an absorbing, moving chronicle… Ebullience and grief mark a touching memoir.”
KIRKUS REVIEWS

“A gorgeously candid account of acting and show business. And an intimate and heartfelt story of love, loss and a life spent together. It is an honour to be invited in on these diaries. I cannot remember being so moved by a book.”
DOLLY ALDERTON, international bestselling author of Everything I Know About Love

“An emotional rollercoaster - profoundly moving and wonderfully entertaining. A brilliant memoir about living, loving and losing.”
BERNARDINE EVARISTO, winner of the Man Booker Prize and author of Girl, Woman, Other

“What a book! To put it one way, you could describe the lovely Richard E. Grant's
A Pocketful of Happiness as love, death, and showbiz stories - and while accurate, that would be to miss out both its fierceness and tenderness.” —NIGELLA LAWSON, bestselling cookbook author and Television host

A Pocketful of Happiness documents the head and heart exploding overwhelm of grief … brutal but necessary.”
—THE SUNDAY TIMES

“Grant’s profoundly moving book, part love letter to his beloved wife, part gossipy memoir about his life and times, will resonate with anyone who ever lost a loved one.”
—DAILY EXPRESS

“Richard E. Grant’s heartbreaking memoir recalls a long, happy marriage – and leaves us shattered for his loss.”
—THE SPECTATOR

“A touching account.”
—THE OBSERVER

“An elegant exploration of the profundity of loss. While the memoir will appeal to Grant’s many fans, it may also comfort those struggling with an impending or recent loss.”
—LIBRARY JOURNAL

“The title of Richard E. Grant’s memoir, A Pocketful of Happiness, is both misleading and utterly truthful. On the one hand, the book is full of charming anecdotes which are indicative of the Swaziland-born, British actor’s sunny disposition, but, on the other, it charts the grim journey of losing his wife… An endearing read.”
—ASSOCIATED PRESS

“Incredibly moving.”
—THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

A Cinematic Ode to Grief and Joy
I have been a huge fan of Richard E. Grant since I saw his film Withnail and I 35 years ago. He should have won an Academy award for this brilliant role—but he wasn’t even nominated! His new memoir is by turns a breezy ride through the looking glass world of showbiz, and a grim Dante’s Hell journey in the realm of the terminally ill. In the end, A Pocketful of Happiness is a testament to the little joys in life and how important it is to share those with the people whom you love. This is a well-written book full of memories of love, humor, and a life together. I wish my life had been full of love like this! Yes, it is sad but your heart is so full of joy for this family that you live every day with them as they say goodbye. In case you can't tell I highly recommend this tale! The memories with celebrities alone are well worth the read.

Mr. Grant has written a warm, funny, multi-layered tribute to his late wife, Joan Washington. Their 38-year love story will move and inspire you. Death always wins, but if we're lucky, we live on in the hearts and minds of those we've loved.

Having been a fan of the Scarlet Pimpernel many years ago and intrigued to find out more about the actor, I ordered this memoir as soon as I heard about it . Let's just say, I knew very little about Richard E. Grant before reading it. For example, isn't it amazing that a showbiz couple can be happily married for over 30 years and nobody broadcasts that fact. In the memoir, Grant shares the professional highs and lows as well as personal ones which in itself is interesting enough. However, the Grant family fights united against a formidable foe only to be defeated which is the main subject of the book. Ultimately, his wives motto and the title of the book are worth remembering on a personal level. Summary: The Richard E. Grant variety of husband is rare - if you got one, hold on to him tightly; nothing in life is guaranteed.

I read this lovely tome in three hours… spectacular, real, bracing, funny…much like the lovely relationship it so beautifully examines. Life is precious and even more so when you read the words of someone lucky enough to embrace every moment of a life we’ll lived.

Since seeing him on the screen for the first time in Dracula (1992) I’ve been a fan of Richard E. Grant’s. Until reading his memoir, however, I never knew a single thing about him other than that he was immensely talented.

This is a love story, in a different form - Grant’s love for his wife shines from each page in this. The love, the struggle, the grief, the mourning which can feel like it will never abate, and, always, the continuous love. Though not an easy read, a very moving and poignant one.

Recommended, but be aware that this is triggering for those who’ve recently suffered loss.

Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the DRC

1.0 out of 5 stars Title doesn’t match the content
Reviewed in Canada on February 21, 2024
This book is very self serving. It is meant to be about his wife’s fight with lung cancer and her death. A greater portion of it is a chatty discourse about the author’s career and the accolades he receives. There is a lot of bragging and name dropping. Prince Charles and Camilla, Sting and Trudi Styler, Nigella Lawson, Barbra Streisand and James Brolin, etc ab infinitum. A lot of time spent telling historical accounts of his past achievements which have nothing to do with his wife.

REG’s strange fixation with Barbra Streisand features in several chapters. It is like an adolescent crush gone off the rails. Rather embarrassing in my humble opinion. Right down to the two foot tall statue of her face that he has commissioned for his garden. Really!?

What a glorious depiction of a life full of love and the loss of someone so precious. I don’t know REG but I would congratulate him heartily for this book. It made me weep ferociously. How can a book about people you don’t know do that to you? So well written. Devoid of pomposity or a ‘poor me’.

Loss is so personal but I feel I got to fully understand how truly awful but beautiful this experience has been for Richard and Oilly and their friends and family. A remarkable book. Read it!
