Inspired by her popular Wild Thing podcast, journalist Laura Krantz incorporates the scientific method and her journalistic skills to determine if aliens might exist.

How likely is it that humans aren’t alone in the universe?

Reports of strange lights, UFO sightings, and alien encounters abound—and some (like recent accounts from US Navy pilots) even sound credible. In recent years, armed with state-of-the-art technology and better information, the search for extraterrestrials overflows with exciting possibilities. Within our own solar system, astrobiologists search for the biochemical building blocks that might sustain microbes, astronomers discover far-flung stars, orbited by planets that could be teeming with life, and astrophysicists point sophisticated telescopes toward the deep reaches of the universe, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

Is There Anybody Out There? turns our collective gaze skyward: What’s the likelihood of life on other planets? Or that aliens have already made the trip to visit us? How would they get here? Why do we want to find them? And what does it mean if we do (or don’t)? Teaching readers to challenge their gut assumptions and open their minds to new possibilities by using critical thinking and the scientific method, journalist Laura Krantz investigates the science, culture, and philosophy of a universe in which we’re not alone—and why the idea of alien life has abducted our imaginations.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Definite proof of extraterrestrials remains frustratingly absent, but there are many reasons to think there must be life out there, somewhere. In this clearly written work, Krantz carefully considers several of them." - Kirkus

"Researchers and report writers will appreciate the rich back matter, and both skeptics and believers will appreciate her insightful questions and transparent reporting—and come away with more questions than answers." - Booklist

It's funny, the writing just pops, it taught me stuff -- history, chemistry, astronomy, and even what a "Drake Equation" is! Along the way Laura Krantz tells a great story, beginning of course in Roswell, New Mexico, and the illustrations are fabulous. I have three young people I'm wrapping this up for this holiday season. Just an absolutely delightful book.

I’ve got 2 boys, 9 and 12. The 12 year old is pretty good about doing his homework without complaint but my 4th grader is in the thick of “this is boring and I’m never going to have to know this” thoughts about math. Maybe he’s brilliant. Maybe he’s just struggling with it- it’s something we need to work on with him. But I’ll tell you what- I LOVE that this book shows how math and science can be (and currently are!) applied to help real scientists make sense of our world and take steps toward answering the Big Questions. The framework of aliens is thought provoking and engaging to young scholars. The author does a great job of hooking their interest with the aliens. And while they’re here, shows them how integral math, physics, and the scientific method is to REAL LIFE (both terrestrial and extra). That’s the win here. A good book that keeps hard-to-please readers engaged and sends them back out to the world with an appreciation for (maybe even excitement about) subjects previously known as boring. That’s a 5 star book!

My kiddo was so excited to get a copy to Laura Krantz’s second book. He absolutely loved her first one and loves a sequel. We read it together over a couple of days and couldn’t put it down. He loves the way she asks questions and tells stories that makes science fun. I love the way these books lead to great family conversations and shared curiosity. It can be hard to get my middle schooler to voluntarily read books that are not graphic novels, but the beautiful layout and graphics in this book really helped him to not feel overwhelmed reading a book with more content. And now my older teen has picked it up and started reading it as well. I know the book is listed for ages 8-12, but really is a great book for 12+ as well.

As a teacher, mom, writer and lover of all things weird and scientifically awesome…Is There Anybody Out There? knocked it out of the planet! Not only are the graphics and writing entertaining, but the science behind Laura’s second book in her Wild Thing series is spot on. I’m a high school teacher and my younger readers keep grabbing it during free reading…fascinated by the crazy facts, legit science, and Laura’s clear and brilliant way of explaining difficult yet fascinating concepts. Definitely a must read if you are curious about life beyond our world, alien 👽 encounters, the psychology behind it all, and just how big space really is.

This book is such a fun read. It is a great way to share the stories of investigation into alien life with kids and young readers, and as a mom, I really enjoyed it too!! It provides a great combination of interesting storytelling with solid science and there was clearly a lot of research that went into it. I would highly recommend it for kids (and adults) who are interested in learning more about the search for anything extraterrestrial - clearly a hot topic in 2023 - shared with skill and humor by Laura Krantz.

My family was so excited to read another book published by Laura Krantz! We loved The Search for Sasquatch. Would we love this one as much? Answer = 100% yes! Our ten year old instantly dove into Is Anybody Out There, regaling us with spacecraft stories and telling us how to pronounce words like "Oumuamua." He tells us the Roswell chapter was his favorite. Our twelve year old is reading it now. She says five stars so far! And then we'll read aloud with our seven year old. An instant family favorite!

This book is an impressive combination of intrigue, mystery, and scientific facts. As a parent, I have been trying to answer my kid's questions about Earth's formation and first forms of life in an understandable way for years now. This book provides a kid-sized explanation with ease. I will just pull out and read aloud from the "What is Life" chapter next time they ask!

This book will make all your wildest alien dreams come true (or at least seem possible). This book is jam-packed with fun facts, mind-boggling facts, and actually, lots of important things for everyone to know. As a researcher and journalist, Krantz digs into big questions and mysteries: what really happened at Roswell? What are the chances there is life out there in the universe? How do scientists explore and study space? Have Navy pilots actually seen UFOs? It's all fun stuff to think about and talk about after reading!

"Is Anybody Out There" is geared toward the middle-grade reading levels, but the information is interesting for a much wider age band than that. My kids are ages 10 and almost 13, and I am way older and we are all enjoying being wowed by the stories and the science, learning cool acronyms like SETI and MUFON and learning about cool concepts like solar sails and the Fermi Paradox. Highly recommend!
