Some reviewers stated whom they were rooting for, but I won't say because the reader needs to decide that for themselves (which is kind of the whole point!). I don't want to give any spoilers but will only say that I found the ending to be perfect; both characters got exactly what they deserved. And I don't mean that in a bad way. It wasn't a rosy resolution for both, but it fit and it was the best possible outcome, in my opinion.

Though Not exactly black-and-white simple, ultimately one of the characters acted more out of selfishness, and grew even more callous, whereas the other character grew more as a person. Profound illustration of how both good and bad can come out of people during times of duress.

The first few chapters were a bit slow - the author went a little overboard making her point about how much the character wanted a baby - but hang in there because it picks up and is well worth it. It's a good read, has fleshed-out characters, and is thought-provoking.

I hope to read more from this author.

I thorough enjoyed this book until the judge's ruling. Custody was granted to the person who I had assumed would get him but I think the judge was too harsh on Cate and too light on Jada. It also bothered me that it was never brought to light in court exactly what lead her to make her decision to leave him on Cate 's doorstep: Jada left her NEWBORN home ALONE for TWELVE hours to get high. The judge did not know about this but the readers do. Jada put her baby in danger twice, not just once and a year of probation is not a strong enough punishment for being egregiously neglectful.

Wow! Let me just say, it did not end the way I thought it would and I am still mulling over the moral dilemma. I couldn't even pick a character to root for as they were both so perfectly flawed in the mistakes they made. Don't get me wrong, that is not a criticism, it is absolutely the brilliance of this novel. Such real, fully fleshed, flawed humans, trying to navigate a very difficult situation. This book is the perfect "bookclub" novel as it is sure to incite a lively conversation.
