She hasn’t seen her brother in years. Now, he’s dead. When Judi Westerholme finds out her estranged brother has been murdered, she assumes it’s connected to his long term drug addiction. Returning home, she is shocked to discover he had been clean for years, had a wife—now missing—and a child, and led a respectable life. But if he had turned his life around, why was he killed in a drug deal shooting? And where is his wife? Desperate to know what really happened, Judi sets out to uncover the truth, even though it means confronting her own traumatic past. But she’s not the only one looking for answers. With a gutsy, unapologetic protagonist, Trust Me, I'm Dead is a gritty and bold crime thriller that explores the sacrifices people will make for their families.

I write both fiction and poetry, for adults, children and young adults.

My most recent crime novel is "Woman, Missing", published by HQ (HarperCollins) in Australia, which features PI Lou Alcott investigating two different missing women. To complicate things, her grandfather is one of Melbourne's biggest crime bosses, which means Lou has a lot to juggle!

My adult crime fiction was, for a long time, mostly short fiction and a couple of unpublished works. In 2009 I began working on "Trust Me, I'm Dead". In 2018 it was shortlisted for the CWA Debut Dagger Award, and is now published by Verve Books UK. A sequel, "Dead and Gone" followed in 2020, and "Mad, Bad and Dead" appeared in August 2022.

"Trust Me, I'm Dead" is set at the end of Melbourne's gangland wars, in the aftermath when paybacks might set it all off again. Judi, my main character, gets involved when her brother is murdered.

In "Dead and Gone", Judi's boss at the pub is murdered and illegal tobacco dealing is at the heart of the conflict.

"Mad, Bad and Dead" continues to explore the aftermath of violence, families destroyed and revenge propelling people into deadly actions.

I've also been writing books for young readers for more than 25 years. My first children's book was "The Too-Tight Tutu" which stayed in print for over 20 years. I have had more than 70 children's and YA books published, including five verse novels.

I love reading - I think this is where my writing emerged from - the ability to create imaginary worlds is one I always hoped I'd have. My earliest reading experiences were the Narnia books, and then a lot of crime and historical fiction in my teen years.

In poetry, I write mostly free verse. My two collections were published by Pariah Press in Melbourne. My picture book, "Now I Am Bigger", is also in free verse.

My most recent verse novel for children, "Mina and the Whole Wide World", won the Australian Prime Minister's Award for Children's Books in December 2022, a very special honour for me.

I teach creative writing to adults, and include a big reading component in my classes, as well as learning about the publishing industry. I also do school visits, and love question time from the kids. You never quite know what they might ask you!

Nicely written and enjoyable. Wasn't sure about the protagonist at first, but came to like her.

I'm not too sure how this novel has past me by until now, but, better late, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Judi Westerholme and 'living' through her tumultuous life in her determination to solve the riddles her (now dead) brother left her. Believable, tight, back stories made all of Judi's angst and courage and stubbornness very realistic. Throw in an abandoned child, gangland baddies and a handsome cop, and you have a romp of a story that kept me turning the pages - and now, I've just bought Book 2. If you enjoy Aussie crime (or, any crime story), read this.

I can’t remember the last time I read a contemporary mystery novel. I’ve read plenty of contemporary thrillers and quite a few mysteries set in fantastical worlds, but nothing quite like “Trust Me, I’m Dead”.

To start off, I want to say I liked the book a lot. The characters were portrayed in a realistic way, and even though I wasn’t a huge fan of Judi at first, I appreciated the way her personality developed over the course of the story. The pacing was mostly good too. The first 20% of the book was a bit slow for my tastes, but it got much better when things kicked off in earnest. I also loved that the book was set in Australia—it’s a setting we don't see often enough in fiction!

I would read more books by this author.

A woman returns to Melbourne because her ne'er do well brother's been killed. He'd apparently turned his life around, but then appeared to have been involved in underworld goings-on again, and everyone was after her to find something her brother had hidden.
She does indulge in some aggravating behaviour, which puts her into unnecessary danger a few times in the story, but it was good to see her turns of intelligence at critical points....not just a damsel in distress.

I liked the way the characters were written and the fast pace. There was always a twist and a turn to keep the reader guessing.

4.0 out of 5 stars An impressive introduction to Judi Westerholme by Sherryl Clark
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 20, 2021
Judi lives in a secluded area. She has one friend, a local cop. He visits her to tell her that her brother Andy is dead. Murdered. She travels to Melbourne to talk to Detective Sergeant Heath, and arrange Andy's funeral, but she finds herself attacked and embroiled in a brewing gangland war, and also becomes responsible for Andy's two year old daughter. A girl she didn't even know existed.

I went into this book without any knowledge of the genre or having read anything else from Sherryl Clark, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it right up my alley.

My knowledge of Australia is limited to Neighbours, and Home & Away from three decades ago, Dame Edna, and Russell Crowe, but the locations were well explained so I didn't feel at all disorientated or lost.
I really liked the characters and felt an outpouring of empathy for Judi throughout. It's good to see another book with a strong female protagonist who refuses to play the victim, and just wants to get on with things. Her reluctance to get involved in the beginning is completely understandable and well explained as you read on.
The sense of tension didn't really come into play until around a quarter of the way in, but it felt like a starter pistol; a sharp, loud, bang and away you go.
Judi is a bit snappy but I think you would be too given her history. It makes her more authentic and believable, and the book was all the better for it.
Overall, Trust Me, I'm Dead is a great read and I'm happy to recommend it to readers of Crime thrillers. I will be reading the second book involving Judi, Dead and Gone, momentarily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful and Intriguing

Set in suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, this fast-paced story keeps you on your toes with dramatic action and tightly controlled suspense. The main character, Judi, is thrown into the dark underworld of the gangland wars (actual events) as she tries to make sense of her brother's death and the frightening demands of those who want something that he has hidden.
Her gutsy character is shown in how she deals with sudden and painful events and her determination to resolve the mystery of what her brother has hidden and why he was killed. With a developing relationship between Judi and the main detective investigating the case, complications build to a dramatic climax.
Really enjoyed reading this and staying up very late to find out what happened in the end!

Think Kinsey Millhone minus the PI license and with an Ozzie accent and an unexpected kid and you have Clark's protagonist in Trust Me I'm Dead. Here's hoping that Clark has an entire alphabet of Judi Westerholme novels up her sleeve. Well worth a read.
